Aw, what about us freaks who listen to this stuff while sober? Granted, I tend to listen more to the heavier stuff than the more chill regular psychedelic stuff. Though having said that...

... I liked this, reminds me quite a bit of this song but perhaps a little better.

Here's a question for you all, do you guys think that we have found all there is to find for 1970s psychedelic albums or is there more hiding in some record bin someplace? I keep poking around Youtube and the like and notice that it's the same semi-obscure or unexpected bands that show up in peoples top lists and recommendations. I hesitate to bring them up in the thread because I assume most people have found bands like Leaf Hound, Orang-utan, Farm, Road, Dogfeet, Christopher, Seeds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Acid Nightmares, Steppenwolf, pre-disco Bee Gees etc by accident on the internet, or am I making a huge assumption here?

I listen to it sober more often than not these days. It doesn't take getting stoned to appreciate it (though it doesn't hurt).

I think there's still stuff to discover. I think we'll find it in music from other countries. Most recent example would be all the great Zamrock stuff from the seventies. Who knows what hasn't made it out of other countries. Argentina had a really cool psychedelic community in the seventies. Maybe North Korea had a happening psychedelic scene we don't know about!

Anyway, here's a song that came on my stereo while I was writing this reply.

https://youtu.be/Z6ta1FQKw-M

And here's a cool Argentinian track:

Listening to Psych stuff sober is fine and normal. you dont need to be stoned to enjoy stoner/doom but it definitely makes it better IMO.

most of the time when I listen to songs that I experienced while on psych drugs it triggers similar feelings/sensations so its kind of like a natural high.

Some of them do definitely take a lot of psychedelics though. When I stayed in Tokyo for 6 months, weed was almost impossible to get but shrooms and acid were pretty easy, but the only place anyone could get them was from musicians lol

You know I'm glad you brought up other countries because that reminded me there are a couple Record Store Day drops for that this year! Here is the Dutch one and here is a Brazilian one. I haven't started googling the tracks off of them yet to see what they're about, but hey it's a starting point.

Since I've got one vote to :justpost: I guess I'll get to it and start posting my gleanings from people's recommended lists, YouTube algorithm upchucks, and random stuff I've found. Apologies in advance if some not quite psych music accidentally get posted, I'm generally pretty bad with songs that are at the intersection of multiple genres.

First there's the Acid Nightmares compilation album. I like the whole album, but some particular songs are Red Brained Woman, Grave Digger, and Doomsday.

And now some things I mostly know by name as they keep popping up again and again:

Billy Joel's Attila (Astute readers may notice I snuck this one by in the S/D/S thread.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7s8PHnCTGI

Edit: Lol forgot to at least post about Steppenwolf. The first two albums are the ones most often cited in psych lists, but I'll post the one song that made me realize there is much more to the band than just Born to be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride: Don't Step on the Grass, Sam.

Since this is the most fitting thread to say this: I was excited to see a new release from Mr. Bungle this morning and then I listened to it. It is utter garbage akin to Ministry's Filth Pig. It is so incredibly uninteresting and such a letdown from what the band used to be.

Edit - I now see it's a cover of an old 1982 Exploited track, which sort of explains things. Strange they came back from nowhere with a bad cover song.

To be fair I've never heard their thrash tape. I started with the band shortly after their self titled album came out and it's still my favorite release. California is really good but nothing tops the self titled album for me.

Dougie Poole - some weird sludgy trippy country stuff. What Ween probably would have released if 12 Golden Country Greats came out around the time of The Pod.

Acid Moon and the Pregnant Sun - throwback stuff with some modern touches (which pretty much describes a lot of psych stuff these days). I really like the album artwork. I'm on the fence about the song to be honest. I like it but I know I'll get tired of it real quick.

Rodion G.A. - In Linistea Noptil - very cool mid-70's instrumental tune from Romania. Sounds like it could have been at home sampled on DJ Shadow's first album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkv0DkQWmUE

GAM - Heavy Meadow - these guys were from Savannah, GA in the mid 90s. I saw them play in Valdosta, GA, and then in Atlanta. They were a lot of fun live. They were art students from the Savannah College of Art and Design and they had some cool sculptures they would bring on stage. It was only something that could have come from the mid-90s. They released two albums and then sadly disappeared. The first album has this song on it, along with another great track (with vocals) called Beer Planet. The only other album came out after this one and was a full length disc. It had a few really great tracks and like I said, it was a bummer to see their career end. Great for fans of Mr Bungle, Ween, and Primus. This is a monstrous track. I heard it one time very loud on a couple hits of acid and that's what sealed the deal for me. An old article from Baby Sue about them

Ween - You Were the Fool, live from the excellent '96 Country Tour Sampler bootleg (1996). A good follow up after the New Riders track above. Has a similar feel. This whole Country Tour Sampler is on Youtube and features some of the best live material the band has ever produced.

Rose City Band - Rivers of Mind (2019). A side project from Ripley Johnson, of Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo. Definitely has a similar feel as Wooden Shjips in its vocals with a bit of a country feel. Very good.

I'm very jealous. I saw them in 1994 (I think it was) and I really regret having stopped paying attention to the band for a while back then. There was a period for me between 1994 and 2013 when I wasn't paying attention to their current material. I fixed that in 2013 when I became friends with someone who was a huge fan and he introduced all the stuff I had missed over the years.
