If you think about it, diamonds are to squares what ovals are to circles. A loving disgrace. A perversion of shape. Just looking at them makes you itch in a part of your brain that you can't quite reach or articulate. It just isn't right somehow, like trying to find the start of a Mobius strip or if the Sarge in Beetle Baily is actually real or just a manifestation of Beetles latent and repressed guilt complex. Anyway those movies are pretty good for the most part

We went to the moon. But, they didn't want to take the chance on a malfunction ruining the live broadcast. So they hired Kubrik after seeing how realistic they thought 2001 looked to produce fake moon landing footage, just in case. They could always fall back on it as an option, even though it would only be an absolute last resort, only if they failed to get the key shots they wanted, and then only if several people approved. They still needed the footage to be produced so it would be ready to go, so they hired Kubrik to direct and produce it, and made him sign a non disclosure. But, he left all kinds of hints in his movies. They never did use any of it. Do the Googtube on it!

all jokes aside, their uniform presence suggests that the scenes in which those patterns appear are important among all the scenes of their respective films. the squares probably have no intrinsic meaning, they're simply a lamppost for the elevated status of the scene itself. nothing more than diagetic props used to signify meta-significance, similar to how lynch uses flickering lights or scorcese uses extreme hand close-ups or kurosawa uses rain. pretty basic stuff op
