our every move is the new tradition

Barry Convex posted:

anyone have scans of this or at least an issue number

The most obvious example is probably a conversation in issue #7 between the two leads. "You think the opposition sit around arguing about who has the most right to be racist?"

It seems like this is Ennis's current hobbyhorse subject. If you read enough of his work, he goes through distinct periods in which a particular topic is high on his mind and tends to get worked in at regular intervals. Early in his career, it was the Irish Troubles (with occasional time-outs for anger over racism and/or his take on the question of God); for a while in the 2000s and early 2010s, it was anger over the Catholic church; now he's been writing a lot about his frustrations with modern left-wing movements' problems with presenting a unified front. It's not necessarily that these topics will be the only thing that he writes about, but rather that they'll inevitably get worked into the current project sooner or later.

I think part of it is that Ennis doesn't have the audience goodwill to get away with things like this, because so much of his creative output is deliberately facile. When he tries to draw a relatively subtle distinction, even in more grounded work like A Walk Through Hell, it comes off as poorly as possible because he's also the guy who wrote The Pro and Dicks and the Herogasm arc in The Boys.

I think what's frustrating is that the stakes he's dismissing are stakes that are precisely most easily dismissed by middle-aged straight white men. He can afford to dismiss what he seems dead-set on glibly framing as facile identity politics because his identity is under most cases never scrutinized-- the monologue in Dear Becky is one bad revision away from the phrases "all lives matter" and "virtue signaling." He's embarrassing himself which sucks because I know good writers as they grow older can confront and amend flaws that were present in their earlier work, but instead he's just entrenching himself amidst the exact same wrecked iconography of patriarchal stability that he was so clear-sighted about in stuff like Preacher (not that Preacher was at all perfect).

I do think that he's actually making an effort in that general direction; his output for the last few years in particular has been more focused on female protagonists and perspectives, for example (Caliban, A Walk Through Hell, a couple of the main arcs of A Train Called Love). He's got this particular issue, though, that he's seemingly decided to hammer on.

I'd be real interested in seeing what happens if you had somebody like Charlotte Finn interview him.

I think this was discussed in the previous thread, but short version is that Pickrodt's name showed up repeatedly on one of those "bad actors in ______ industry" spreadsheets that subsequently went public and had a dozen people relating bad experiences with Pickrodt, from not getting paid to anti-semitism to outright rape. Once the document got leaked he sued everyone who talked bad about him for defamation, the majority of the people who he claimed defamed him were dropped from the case because the judge didn't think it was defamation, and I guess the last three settled out of court now?

My understanding of this is that it's historically rooted in the differing contexts of second-wave feminism in the US versus the UK. Basically, in the 70s feminists in both countries had a wide variety of perspectives on trans people. Some of the feminists in either country were welcoming and accepting of trans women, while others viewed them as men trying to infiltrate women-only spaces or whatever. This diverged in the 80s and 90s, because in the US the religious right got very powerful, and started attacking both LGBT people and women in general. Feminists and trans activists realized that the attacks on both of them were rooted in the same conservative gender ideology, so as a practical matter they formed alliances and as a theoretical matter US thinkers constructed ideological beliefs that worked for both women as a whole and trans women specifically. Meanwhile, in the UK, there wasn't really a religious right to remind people who the real fuckheads were, so anti-trans views were still sloshing around in feminist spaces to a much greater degree. It was then easy for right-wing politicians in the 00s through today to grab those views and exploit them as a wedge issue to peel off voters, which also spread the views around.

Flatting is the process of preparing linework for faster color work by isolating linework areas into flat regions of color to be quickly selected and worked with

as i understand it, they do rough coloring work. like flatting as in they fill in a page with flat colors without shading or anything, and then the artist/colorist goes in and makes it look good and pretty and finished

Synthbuttrange

Flatters don’t fill in with final colors, just colors that are distinct enough that software can easily isolate and help with painting

sliami

yeah—if you ever seen a flatted page, all the colors look super narsty because the point is the areas should be differentiated at a glance and easily selected to input the actual colors. they're also all aliased.

I've seen the predictable argument pop up that since Boom isn't one of the big two they can't pay top dollar, but one imagines they could still pay a living wage. When Warren Ellis had his online forum, he only gave mode powers to women, and he'd refer to them collectively as his "deadly sexy henchwomen" and things like that.

Him being a sex pest is the least surprising news imaginable.

e: vvv Wood (a good friend and collaborator of Ellis) would hit on women inappropriately, and try to drive them out of the industry if they turned him down.
