I have fully accepted this reality of grappling next year. I don’t want to the guy who fucks up the grocery logistics for my area of Canada because I had to roll. My girlfriend got invited to a bjj gym to train in secret but the guy who invited her doesn’t think COVID-19 is real and believes it’s a government plot to control our movement. She politely declined.

I don't really understand what's going on myself. My gym has been open for weeks and at first was superficially limiting class sizes but doing full training. Now I see a picture of a 30+ person class (it's not a huge gym either, so that's a very crowded class). I live in Florida where we actually have a consistently increasing trend of cases, and per the data the county I live in had by far the worst day of new cases yesterday. What excuse is there for doing this? Am I overreacting? I feel like as soon as one person gets sick literally everybody there will be, and it seems incredibly irresponsible. I'm rather upset with, well, everybody at my gym.

I feel the same way about my gym here in Northern Virginia. I also am dying to go, and have to remind myself it’s just a hobby

AZ is the one place trending worse than you guys (https://covid19-projections.com/maps/). I posted about my gym reopening with reasonable restrictions like those recently posted, but I think there was regular open mat on Saturday and if not at my gym, plenty of neighboring gyms are having open mats. I'm trying not to judge people too harshly about those choices. I don't know who else they come in contact with or how much their life has been turned upside down by an invisible threat that hasn't directly infected anyone they know. I can see how the risk doesn't feel real and the emotional fatigue of life deferred seems worse. That said, I don't think you're overreacting. I am in the camp that thinks its unethical to behave in a way that might make me a spreader. During my weekly grocery shopping I always think about the employees there who work indoors every day at the one place everyone still goes. They can't really get out of the way of other people and all they have is some makeshift PPE. I really wouldn't want to be the rear end in a top hat that took them down because I couldn't find a substitute hobby for a few months.

My gym opened a few weeks ago, on alternating days, drilling with "COVID buddies." It took about a week before that turned into live shark tanks and ten-minute rolls with whoever you locked eyes with. While I can see it coming across as irresponsible, I am also in a state that has had a total of 2,000 cases of infection, and most of those centered three hours south of my location.

I have a quarantine buddy that I roll with. He's pretty inexperienced and that can make rolls not as fun sometimes, but he takes the virus seriously and thats more than I can say for some folks at my gym. I'm happy to keep rolling with him until reopening gets further along.

I don't think I'll be back to the gym soon but I did bump into a local blue belt the other day and while we're both trying to be responsible he did seem open to a man to man park rumble

Due to technology being technology and feedback from students, we are no longer requiring you to sign up for classes. Just show up like normal. Let’s get back in! Thank you again for making this process so easy for us and the staff. "

My gym is doing conditioning workouts by appointment. I'm not bothering. I am working out but I can do that on my own. Can't wait to go back but I can wait August or September. I've lost roughly 20 lbs since things shut down.

If anyone has any wondering still where guys like Gordon Ryan get it from, seems Renzo has bought into the idea that the 75 y/o man who may wind up dead due to actions taken by the Buffalo Police is a crisis actor (graphic if you've not seen the video yet): https://twitter.com/RenzoGracieBJJ/status/1269993468119695360 "Now watch until the end ... it goes far beyond what we can imagine.." -- To stay on the topic of returning: I bought mats and have started drilling with a friend who lives alone. Last time we trained we did a video call with our instructor who watched us do some of the drills and helped us work through some questions. Worked reasonably well, I felt I got a lot out of it because it was basically him giving us a focused (remote) lesson for 45 minutes. I'm not optimistic that the gym itself will be open for a few more months. Neon Belly fucked around with this message at 02:00 on Jun 11, 2020 |

Anyone have any video links that deal with front headlock defense? I'm a tall skinny guy with a particularly long torso and neck. Stout guys get the front headlock and just crush me. I've never pulled off a sit-out in my life. Looking for stuff about how to pull guard from there, and how to defend against anacondas and guillotines in particular. Found this video from Lachlan Giles which looks very helpful, if anyone has anything else (perhaps going into greater detail) it'd be appreciated.

I'm sure that like every gym there's a lot of law enforcement who train at Renzo's. I don't know about NYC but around here you're almost certain to find more LEOs than black people at any given gym. I don't really understand the compulsion to publicly air an opinion that will gain him nothing. Gordon at least can use the excuse of keeping his name in the spotlight but why would Renzo so needlessly and permanently alienate so much of the public? I'm jealous of the folks who are training. Please don't be part of the huge Venn overlap of people who are very eager to return to grappling and people who willfully and flagrantly disregard all other precautions. If you're training st a gym that's not supposed to be open consider what you're doing to the training partners who continue to pay dues but aren't training. What are you going to say to them when they feel able to come back?

So for that, sorry guys Anyway, Im back in the gym full time. Regular classes with the full schedule start up next week, and for the first time this week, Im feeling like I am making some progress as a new purple belt. Starting to chain things together a lot more smoothly, even on pretty good blue belts in our gym. Progress makes me feel good.

Actual grappling question: I’m trying to add more resistance to solo-drilling still. For example, instead of just doing shrimps I’ve been adding 20-40lbs of weight to my hands to feel more like the real thing does and doing pull-ups hanging from a gi collar thrown over the pull-up bar. Any other easy at-home things you have been doing to practice?

I have a weak hip from prior injuries so the weight can be helpful for flexibility in cutting angles and strength to keep my squeeze on. Can also double as a strongman implement if youre a weak babby like me.
