I really do get the impression the one person behind OC-do-not-steal Princess was probably the only one who had an actual long term plan, the rest of the comic reeks of making things up as you go along, which inevitably ends with 'pfff... aliens' when you want to have a plot twist you've been hinting but only thought of what it actually is at the last minute.

Weird. Last night I was showing my wife clips from Xuxa, a (hot model's) Brazilian children's show that somehow got a couple English episodes made. It is loving wild, absolute chaos. Unintelligible English, bad Double Dare, hot Brazilian backup dancers in booty shorts with thigh high boots etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpeYoKCSVck I thought it was a straight fever dream for years but I was hanging with this Brazilian dude and he was playing music that instantly reminded me of that single episode of Xuxa. Guy said "oh hell yeah, xuxa is a massive star in Brazil and we all grew up lusting after her and her dancers" The point of the story is the Brazilian (maybe just portuguese?) version at one point had a crudely drawn, vaguely suggestive cartoon intro that is very similar to the megaman art: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3jhHjjYuVk Apparently Xuxa is/was a pretty good person and was committed to teaching kids about diversity, exposure to a bunch of languages, inclusivity etc so it totally makes sense why the show didn't work in the US. Space Dandy actually comes to mind as fitting given how it didn't even try to make sense. Mind you it did outright say every episode takes place in an alternate universe, with the connecting theme being the protagonist shares his consciousness across almost every version of himself. Also it's got kickass music and insane visual design.

Those tropes are partly why I never really got into anime, even though I'm aware they're only found in specific types of anime. I am the last one to go all 'performative SJW' or whatever on the subject of casual entertainment, but the constant sexual harassment and assault is hosed up. I don't necessarily think it's ~deeply problematic~ but I personally don't like it and it makes me less likely to watch the show in question. Much like 1950's Western cartoons, they 'compensate' for it by making sure the man never gets what he wants and is constantly rebuffed with physical violence. But that doesn't make it alright, in fact it's kind of hosed in a different but also classically patriarchal way (ha ha it's funny when men are severely injured). In conclusion, anime is a land of contrasts

The typical harem series of a guy being chased by a lot of girls got popular by the late 90s, probably thanks to datings sims and guys not being able to settle for one girl. The New Adventures of Mega Man© leans into general 90s hornyness and Pereira setting the tone. This was going on since issue one.
