80s Dead:

Downhill From Here 7/17/89: https://youtu.be/UCgp2jaWFW0

Crimson White & Indigo 7/7/89: https://youtu.be/gspGPBijYFU (one of my favorites)

Nightfall of Diamonds 10/16/89: https://youtu.be/ARFNosrPxwQ

I'd put the Brent Mydland era above a lot of the 70s stuff. If Jerry had been more consistent...drat those years could have been pure fire

I think Brent started the 80s off strong but at some point someone told him it was ok to go full jingle bells with his keyboard patches and it just ruins songs for me.

How are you guys forgetting that 88-90 with Brent is one of the best years of the Dead! One of my personal fav eras. Check out "So Glad You Could Make It: Spring 1990"

Edit: Someone above has me beat, those are choice late 80s cuts!

Brent songs are amongst the very worst of all Grateful Dead songs. Even worse than Vince songs (which were actually pretty good).

I dunno taste is a funny thing i guess. he sounds like Will Arnett doing an impression of an awful buttrock singer or something like that

In all fairness I used to absolute DESPISE Phish and in particular couldn't stand Page's voice, even though I knew he was probably the technically best singer in the band. Many years later and they're my favorite band and I love Page's voice, so maybe I'll become a Brent fan in the future (very much doubt it though i hateeeeeee him)

Well, I guess it's time to listen to every show from 1973. Kicking things off with February 9.

edit: I wonder if it was intentional that they played 73 shows in 73.

Listening to the new box set mix of that show is what got me back into 73 the other day.

I'm familiar with a lot of shows from the Fall tours (11/11, 11/17, 12/06 are all favorites) but I haven't heard much from Spring and Summer outside of the Vancouver show and Watkins Glen.

February 9 is a really interesting show. 7 songs debuted at that one.

Road Trips V4#3 Denver 73 has an absolutely insane Playing stanza that weaves in and out of El Paso and Wharf Rat. So drat good.

Boy, 2/15/73 is sure a good time. I forgot how much I enjoy Row Jimmy when it's played a little faster, and that Dark Star->Eyes->China Doll is something else.

I'll admit to being less than thrilled when the Dark Star bassline starts up during a show. I'll take an exploratory Playing in the Band over Dark Star any day of the week.

I bought the other may 77 box set and it is my extremely smart opinion that May 77 was a good month.

But seriously though.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Old & In The Way lately. I’m not usually a big bluegrass fan but I’m mostly put off by newgrass and haven’t listened to a lot of more traditional stuff. I do very much enjoy this and Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band so perhaps I should check out more.

Enjoy this cover much more than the original. Jerry with the voice of a fallen cowboy angel on the very last line

Also this Peter Rowan/Tony Rice version of Midnight Moonlight is so good

Also this is a little sloppy but love a brisk tempo shakedown and the energy is infectious. Kimock coming with that quiet intensity

Speaking of sports and the Dead, is Neil Everett still at espn? He used to drop dead lyrics all the time. Basketball was his favorite, every good rebound got "one man gathers what another man spills!"

Do the Dead have any super spacey mellow songs? I'm thinking something like this, which is tangential to the Dead, but I would like more and it seems like they would have been great at this style:

In short bursts they have stuff that sounds like lots of different parts of that song but not a dedicated song other than Space and who knows what you’re getting with Space. It was usually boring.

It’s been decades since I’ve listened to it, but check out Infrared Roses. Might be something there you like.

Check out Grayfolded. John Oswalt did a two disc plunderphonic mashup of Dark Star that will probably be right up your alley.
