At least with FPS shooters you have ground, which allows for a map. Space battles might have a blurry planet in the background, and, I guess this one might actually have an asteroid field, but there's not a lot there to create variation besides how many and how far apart the capital ships are.

Eh, Battlefront 2 did a good job with space "maps". Use bigass stations, huge capital ships, and debris as "terrain" with the occasional planetside map. Only one of the six maps felt like it was really just "open space" and that was D'Qar. If they're smart they can do the same thing here.

The one thing I didn’t like about house of dying sun was the lack of proper HOTAS support. It felt so arcadey and gimmicky playing in VR with a controller.

That was one of the first things i notice, the attention on it as they increased engine power, and the arrow keys making it look pretty certain as dpad controls for it.

(classic x-wing, you can see the same colors even being used)

Then when you see the TIE interceptor's cockpit, just as it should be, it only has engine and laser levels, no shield. :swoon:
Also the beautiful target display showing the targets health and distance it looks like.

(SNIP)

If you count up the pips of energy on the X-Wing and TIE fighters ELS displays you get 12 in both cases...

and

so it seem that the TIE has more to use in both Engines and Lasers due to it not having any shields....

Remains to be seen what that translates into but still, this is one of the few games on my dream list - X wing in VR - so they got me. Battlefront was fun for *a bit* so I don't regret the purchase, but it didn't have legs

I'm a weirdo with games, I just play one until I get tired of it, and despite everything wrong with Overwatch I haven't stopped playing it

I don't really like 5v5 for that reason though, but single player old school classic missions? sign me the gently caress up

It's a game that's supposed to release in October and yet the teaser trailer wasn't followed up immediately with someone talking about actual gameplay.

The way they are presenting this is a classic attempt to balance hype with not letting anyone ask too many questions about how much fun this all actually is.

Gameplay being shown on Thursday at some EA event. I think this was just to get ahead of it since there was that leak.

Nice catch, makes sense on how they'll balance tie fighters without any shields.

Considering the emphasis on in-cockpit control only, and advertising stuff like HOTAS support, I have to think (or at least pray) they'd be updating the flight controls from BF2's super arcade 3rd person ones.

Going by the old lore it's specifically Imperial-class Star Destroyers and up, due to size. They're effectively twice the length of a Victory and half again as long as a Venator, and the mass difference is obviously far more than that. So it was more a matter of at some point they're exceeding the tech limitations for reasonably operating it in-atmo, rather than it being impossible period. There's still the exception of Lusankya, but I'd guess people like to ignore that due to just how many other dumb issues come up when considering that.

I don't particularly care about this, but even if you're annoyed about it the lore issue was never EVERY star destroyer.

Besides, I agree that it looks odd. It's just aping JJ Abrams obsession with things rising out of obscurity in his shots.

I mean I was irrationally angry at post 2009 Star Trek insisting that all Starfleet vessels are built on the loving ground when Utopia Planitia is a giant shipyard in Martian orbit. But then loving Picard made the entire Utopia Planitia shipyard be on the surface for some stupid reason.

So it can apply to star wars too.

Given that it's specifically first-person and that they're specifically pointing out that there'll be power management, I think odds are reasonably good that they'll also be modelling the controls on the X-Wing series and this won't be another Rogue Squadron.
