Most horror or too rough for kids films like say Watership Down as a 7 year old who was OOO CARTOON AT 9PM FRIDAY SWEET never really messed me up outside of maybe a single night thing. Which even went into adulthood with stuff though not remotely as often. My brain and the footage Event Horizon barely showed probably did the biggest number as an adult though. (We don't need to see more than snippets as our brains will make it so much worse!)

But as an 80s kid the covers of horror movies in the rental stores could do so much more than what they really were. The Wizard of Gore can kiss my rear end with its gruesome cover! :doom:

Word. It was always some individual context free snippet of imagery that I latched onto rather than like, appreciating the story or atmosphere or anything. I used to get absolutely screaming loving spooked by a thing called 'detachable toe' from the Jimowen show to the point where my siblings would whisper 'detachable toe' at me to make me scream. But the Jimowen show was a comedy show and I even enjoyed it like... without that bit. Its just whenever this perfect meme of childhood fear would come on there was a special 'Detachable toe!' vocalization that primed me to poo poo my pants and than there was this bat winged human toe flapping around and it was the perfect surreal horror for a kid.

I saw Troll 2 as a kid and it disturbed me in a way few movies really have, no joke. As a kid there's something really hosed up about that feeling that a movie... isn't supposed to be this way. Like, when everything is well-made you can be traumatized but you still basically understand what just happened: some people are very good at scaring you and they came up with some hosed up poo poo. With stuff like Troll 2, it's hard to understand why every level of the production feels so wrong; it's like genuinely experiencing a nightmare. Or at least that was how it felt to me.

so we'd just have these two diametrically opposed confusing childhood stories about Critters 2, I think I'd like that

lmao @ weak rear end kids getting scared from movies

My big bro was watching Predator and I hid under the table so mom wouldn't see I was watching it too and I was like "hell yes that alien owns". Then the next day I was gonna show it to my friend thinking the tape was still in the VCR, but nope turns out there was actually a porn in there now of a guy fingering two girls' buttholes (???), and then mom barged in and was like "what THE gently caress ARE YOU DOING :byodame: ".

That's something to be scared of :gonk:

Finally saw Ghostbusters when I was in kindergarten after hearing about it for decades (I had seen ads for it on TV and it seemed like it was never coming on, it was probly just a few weeks or months tbh) and was like :aaaaa: and immediately set out to build ghost traps to gently caress up some gosh darn ghosts which are real and exist.

I felt sorry for the guys in Return of the Living Dead who got sick from the chemicals and died, and also the half dogs.

Anyway the only movie thing I was scared of was Dracula but that wasn't because of any movie, it was because when we were on vacation my big brother said Dracula lived in the caravan next to ours and was gonna kill me. It made sense because they were selling Dracula lollipops at the visitors center. Well then me and my friend played Castlevania and learned Dracula was no big deal, he could be easily hosed up. Then we saw that movie and it turned out Dracula was actually the coolest poo poo.

Always remember that the former President was dumber than the dumbest person you've ever met by a wide margin

I saw part of "Aliens" at about 8 years old. I had also been watching a lot of UFO documentary stuff at that age and it all mixed together in my brain, to the point that I completely imagined a scene where Ripley ends up on the Xenomorph ship and finds a room full of human skeletons and discarded baby carriages and clothing. In my mind the Xenomorphs had been visiting Earth for centuries, kidnapping babies, and just letting them grow up and die in this weird, locked room.

I watched Rosemary’s Baby as a pubescent female and lemme tell you, I endured quite a bit of existential horror from that. I’ve made my peace with it and was slightly disappointed that neither of my children were fathered by Satan, though.

The only other one that really hosed with my head was The Quiet Earth. I have a fear of being alone and that movie doesn’t have aliens, zombies, robots or anything else so the protagonist basically endured my absolute worst fear. (It’s also extremely slow and I wouldn’t watch it again but seriously just thinking about it makes me uneasy...)

No one sees Cannibal Holocaust because they want to. They hear about it from somewhere and curiosity gets the best of them. It's basically a snuff film in that it gives you this "I shouldn't be watching this" vibe. Even a desensitized husk of a human being that I am felt unnerved.

That's exactly how I felt when watching Human Centipede 2. The first movie is actually a pretty interesting concept. The second movie is just gratuitous shock bullshit and has no interesting ideas or real exploration of evil/horror.

As for the topic, as a kid my older brother would subject me to a lot of horror movies against my will and I'd be scared from Alien or Nightmare on Elm Street for weeks. But the only one that really hosed me up was Arachnophobia. My gf asked what I would do if she teased me with a spider and I told her I'd brake up with her on the spot. I'd probably burn the whole neighborhood down, too, just to be safe.
