I really enjoyed my time with Rogue Legacy and dare even say it was good then; however, big caveat is that I played it at launch and while it was not the first roguelite, but one of the ones that sort of started a metaprogression roguelite-type game writ-large in a more castlevania-esque type. It had some clunky movement/combat that wasn't good, merely serviceble, but most everything that's come after has vastly improved on both mechanics and controls. Games like UnderMine, Hades, Dead Cells, Synthetik, Immortal Redneck, etc, have vastly improved all-around on both a metaprogression and mechanical. I think people who tried RL well-after it's launch probably would have found it lackluster for that reason. I think RL2 could be really loving good and devs seem to be aware of where things could be a lot better.

Excelzior posted:

lol make sure never to post this in the roguelike thread

Lemme correct myself here and say rogue legacy was fantastic for it's time, because people were still trying to figure out metroidvanias in 2013.

The games that Xaris posted above? Dead cells in 2017 early access till 2018, Hades 2019 still in Early Access, synthetik 2018, and it wasn't until legion rising came out six months later till people paid attention to it.

In a heartbeat I would play these over rogue legacy, especially with such a gap in years. But rogue legacy was great stuff when it came out, and if they can improve on the formula, I think they can pull it off.

Finally got around to finishing Tomb Raider(2013). Gonna give it an overall score of 8.9, really enjoyed the product but it had a few shortcomings. But if it goes cheap during the upcoming summer sale I highly recommend it.

First off, as a Tomb Raider game, it executes flawlessly. Honestly, this game could’ve easily been Indiana Jones and nobody would have noticed. The plot, island setting, and “mystery” are all top notch and well done. A lot of thought and effort was put into the backstory and it shows. Lara’s crew mates are all walking talking character cliches but not necessarily in a bad way. They work because the game knows that it’s a playable movie. You’ll pretty much know what’s going to happen to each of them but again, I don’t see that as a bad thing.

The combat system works and is probably a bit too easy on the normal setting. If you die, it puts right back at the encounter to try again. There’s no health bar and if you take damage you auto recharge it pretty quickly if you can get away from the enemies. Weapons are all great and do different things, I stuck with the bow and rifle most of the game. Melee combat is iffy but I may just suck at it.

The upgrade system relies on discovering things for experience, salvaging junk for weapon upgrades, and raiding secret tombs scattered throughout. The secret tombs are never that well hidden though and are typically short one room puzzles that pay out tons of upgrade experience/salvage.

Moving around is great and very fluid. Gone are the stiff tank style controls and precision jumping. You’ll scale cliffs, jump from ledge to ledge and it all works great. Graphics are great too, some of the set pieces are very well done. I particularly love the wind/storm effects, they’re over the top and make you feel like poo poo is going to hell.

Unfortunately though the game is loaded with quick time events. They’re obnoxious and there are way too many of them, but it’s not that difficult to pass them. Most will give you lots of leeway once you get used to dealing with them. Don’t let this be a deal breaker.

Also the game loves to torture Lara to the point of ridiculousness. She’ll break legs, bleed out, drown in blood, see people die, witness atrocities, and keep moving. They’re really trying to play up her origin as a survivor but it just keeps happening over and over. But like the QTEs don’t let this be a dealbreaker.

There’s multiplayer, but I didn’t touch it and I’m guessing it’s long dead even if there’s people playing.

Overall I really enjoyed the experience and highly recommend it. I’m hoping the sequel is also on sale for dirt cheap in a few days cause I’m looking forward to playing it too.

haven't gotten around to playing Shadow, but I enjoyed both TR 2013 and Rise a good bit. TR 2013 is one of those rare examples of seeming design by committee working out; yes, it cynically discards almost everything that had defined the franchise up to that point in favor of aping design trends from other AAA games, but it actually manages to make that cohere into a pretty enjoyable game

Is there a brigand Oaxaca thread? I played the first campaign on a less popular class (melee oriented maybe?) and it was definitely not balanced or fun and my interest kind of fell off. I wonder what builds ideally let you see and experience the most.

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear there’s an interesting and fun game inside, but it seems like narrowing the player’s options would help them see it.

Can I just say that as much as I loved the idea behind the Steam Game Festival (because demos need to be more of a thing), it sucks that the vast majority of said demos seem to be no longer available now? Some you can still play if you downloaded them during the event, but many are gone entirely and can't be launched any more. Not to mention that if someone became aware of a certain game only after the event had ended and want to give it a try now, they seem to be just SOL.

I get that a fair few of those demos really were alpha/beta versions of their game in varying stages of completeness, but removing them altogether still doesn't sit right with me.

It's probably more up to developers if they want to keep a demo out or not. But yes most were like, barely alpha-level and very incomplete and probably don't want them sticking around as a a taste for the game in a very incomplete status. That's less of an issue when it's a big festival free-for-all-frenzy when it's clear it's a bunch of one-off tastings.

I too played TR2013 relatively recently and I had always assumed the people calling it "torture porn" were exaggerating, but... it really is a lot. It does calm down after the first couple hours, but it ends up just coming off as silly how you are expected to view this as a "gritty, realistic" thing but also Lara just keeps getting up and walking away from things that should absolutely kill any human being. And you just kill... so, so many people. So both of these things combine to make it really hard to reconcile Cutscene Lara and Gameplay Lara. All that said, I'm one of the, apparently, very few people who really loved the Crystal Dynamics TR games and thinks they've been the only people to really thread the needle of "this is a goofy cartoon, but it's still okay to try and tell a story this way." Legend is a great game and everyone should play it for like $2.

By the time Shadow of the Tomb Raider happens it's really jarring how much the narrative revolves around her single minded desire to stab people from stealth as Lara is an adrenaline junkie fueled entirely by spite and already killed a few death gods to gain their powers

Price alert: if you're into Klei games (Don't Starve, Invisible Inc, Oxygen Not Included, etc...), there's a steam sale on them, and the bundle have additional discounts. I had Oxygen Not Included and Hot Lava on my wish list, but $12-13 was too much.
