This was me when I playtested Darkstar One on a lark. Everything worked as it should since the game had been out in Germany for a year already. I got really nervous about not having anything to report despite finishing the drat thing.

You already want to punch a thing when you are mad. We are wired up like that. You take it out on the bag, punch desire and anger goes away fast. Better than punching trees, or walls, or whatever else that busts up your hands. I don't think it trains your brain to want to punch people.

I don't think "we are wired up like that" is true. Maybe some people are? But I think it's more likely that society teaches us that hitting stuff is an acceptable way for people (read: men, really, women are taught not to do this) to express their anger, so people go to that as an outlet. Maybe it's therapeutic though, I dunno. I just think it's probably socially taught more than being totally intrinsic.

Like if you had punching bag on an L shaped stick connected to your back so you could give it a good sock every time something bothered you, yeah it'd be a problem if you suddenly took it away. Having one at home to let out some steam on after bottling up your anger all day is probably beneficial for some people.

Our bodies release fight-or-flight chemicals when angry and bursts of stored energy upon physical exertion like any other animal so yes, we are wired up that way

Victis posted:Our bodies release fight-or-flight chemicals when angry and bursts of stored energy upon physical exertion like any other animal so yes, we are wired up that way "Our bodies[...]release bursts of stored energy upon physical exertion" is true, but is it relevant? Like, does exhausting your phosphocreatine reserve correlate with a feeling of emotional security, or does it just mean you feel tired? Research indicates that exercise can help you de-escalate the fight/flight/freeze response, but that's because it's likely to engage deep breathing, not because it's burning through your energy reserves - and that being the case, why recommend punching something over, say, taking a brisk walk? People have a fight, flight or freeze response, sure. Which of those options they instinctively default to, though, is likely to be associated with nurture rather than nature. Physical aggression's generally not a desirable reaction to stressful situations - there are exceptions, but it's rarely appropriate - and it's questionable whether you should try to nurture and entrain that response in yourself. I mean, it's not the biggest deal in the world. But I don't think "hit things when you're angry" is usually a healthy method of dealing with your emotions, and "we're hardwired to hit things when we're angry!" is only dubiously true. Our wiring goes so far as to encourage us to respond with evasion, aggression or passivity in extremely stressful situations, but which of those we do respond with is usually a result of our life experiences, socialisation, and (if we have more than a split second to consider it) our personal judgement of what's right.

Associating stress with violence is not a ticket to anything good. If you can't control your violent energy when it's things, you're going to have that much more difficulty when it's something alive. If you find yourself having violent thoughts and the urge to act on them, you should really see some help. If you feel this urge often enough that you need to actually invest in something to channel it, you really need to see some help.
