I had an Apollo from 1995 to 2015, and it was a faithful servant but when I got a new bike it was like one of those people who upgrade from an iPhone 3GS to an 11 Pro in one go.

The new bike has a hub gear because a friend told me that was a good thing, and while I think "bike people" are sniffy about them, it's great. Simpler chain arrangement, water resistant, and you can change gear while stationary which is really quite nice in town.

As a 'bike people' hub gears are genuinely fantastic. I love old Sturmey Archer stuff, it's really clever engineering. I played with Shimano's first foray into it about 18 years ago and again it was all good stuff. Rohloff was the top of the line stuff at the time and Shimano very much wanted a piece of that market. Hub gears are great because there are no external moving parts to get caught up in anything so it makes everything look a lot cleaner, plus sealing on them means they're essentially lubed for life. The downsides are they're still heavy and you don't want that on the back end of a bike and having them built into a wheel means if you trash the rim you can't just buy a new wheel off the shelf. Ideally for weight purposes you'd put them in the middle (as has been done on a bunch of high end stuff) but then you need to design the frame around it which is ££££££ to do. Also because they're gears in a small box they're super fiddly to fix if they ever go wrong and as they're nowhere near as ubiquitous as a normal gear setup you'll struggle to find anyone other than a greybeard in a tiny shop to sort it for you.

Bikes are cool and good. Also show us your bike.

Here it is, it's a Dawes Urban Express and the hub gear is the Shimano 7 speed.

It's excellent for my commuter use and because it's so nice to ride I use it a lot, and the car a lot less. Which is good for everyone, particularly since when I bought it I had a 70s V8 which caused Shell's share price to spike every time I started it up.

Any city with a Cycle hire scheme - like London, Cardiff or milton keynes is using bikes with hub gears, so find out who fixes those and go there - I used to work for the one in Cardiff and it's run out of a small charity in Pontcanna, but since they're fixing 20+ vandalised bikes every day, they know those things inside out.

Yeah that's a sweet looking bike and like you say, clean with no derailleur hanging off it. Upright, comfortable, minimal fettling needed to keep it sweet.

This is my 2005 Orange 5 taken about a year ago with period parts on it. The shock and forks needed a service so I donated the forks to the guy next door for his kid's bike and he's resurrected them with a seal kit. Paid £400 for this bike about 8 years ago, beat the poo poo out of it and have dropped new forks, shock, brakes on it. I imagine it will eventually get a 1x drivetrain at some point. The pink grips are a very important upgrade.

I should probably get a decent photo of it with the new bits on for insurance purposes at least. I also have a road bike I bought in 2011 through the cycle to work scheme. I've destroyed both wheels on it because I can't stay on roads with it, I should've bought a cyclocross bike :v:

I've only used the rental ones but they're pretty great, yeah. While we're on bikechat if you're anywhere near hackney then London Bike Kitchen is great, £50 gets you 10 hours of workstand time and instructions on how to fix and maintain your bike.

we had a e-bike demo day when i worked for the NT, got to zip around the woods on a £6k bike. It didn't zoom you along, but basically added power to your pedal so going up hill was a doddle and you could get to over 40 on a flat whilst peddling like an old dude on his way home from tesco.

i'd recommend giving them a try cyril, might be a good way to get out a bit further!

They used to suck rear end but have gotten a lot better in the past few years as batteries got smaller/lighter and tech moved from having the motor in the rear wheel to having it centre of the frame. Over here they're just pedal assist opposed to just flicking a switch and the bike powering you along, this is because our government sucks rear end about everything electric powered that's not a car (though I'm fairly confident you can hack most of them to bypass this). Anything with a 350w or above motor is easily capable of helping you get up the biggest of hills with relative ease and ranges are easily getting on for up to 50 miles on the expensive end so you shouldn't fear much for getting stranded anywhere with an electric bike that's ran out of juice.

There are a couple of electric bike mags about as well as a decent amount of online reviews on youtube and such. They're still new tech so there's a premium on them, and China is of course knocking them out for cheaper though whether that's a good thing is of course debatable.

there's no gaps on the red routes! and the blue routes are really awesome and all great fun. you'd probably need a proper downhill bike for the black routes and i wouldn't go anywhere near them. way beyond my ability.

i'd probably wait till next year if you want to go. the way they shuttle people up is pack you all in to a van and have like 20 sweaty cyclists all breathing on each other. got no idea how they'll fix that with covid-19.

Hello, dear

hemale in pain
Jun 5, 2010

when you get your ebike also make sure you have a gold rated, very expensive, lock and literally ALWAYS lock the frame to something which can not be moved or the lock lifted over.

never leave the bike unattended without it being locked up. it might seem like im being patronising but ebikes are very high theft targets and soooooo many people do not lock their bikes up safely.

i have this for my ebike https://www.amazon.co.uk/Abus-Granit-54-X-Plus-D-Lock-Black/dp/B000P1PZLI?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

I've ridden black routes before, the annoying thing is black just means really technical, the addition of gaps jumps is yet another layer on top and I've always sucked at jumping unless I was following someone to the point of not thinking about it. I think a couple of friends were up for it pre-covid so hopefully when this dies down we'll get over there. Ta.

It's annoying because pre-covid shops and brands would often have test days where they'd let you loose on all sorts of stuff so you could compare. Getting your leg over one is definitely a solid idea to see how you go.

Good thing with running is there's no reason to splash out on posh gear.
