Ya I can't binge 1hr long shows normally but anything with mystery elements I just devour.

I feel like I should have rewatched the first two seasons like many people here did. I might be a bit rusty on all the characters and timeline. I was trying to convince my sister to watch it with me but I am showing her it's always sunny so that's not a bad rewatch either.

Also I still feel like this show is severely underrated here but it seems to have done well for Netflix so still happy.

As well as the customary rewatch, remember that dark.netflix.io exists, and is quite good for patching individual things you might have forgotten.

Was it ever explained how experimenting on kids makes a time machine? I don’t quite understand why Noah and Helge were doing that and where they got the idea.

I don't think that's been quite explained yet (I'm rewatching at the moment) but it seems like part of it was they tested on the kids they kidnapped so that it would work by the time Noah sent child Helge back to the future. I assume the tech is going to be used later, but I dunno.

The chair machine was built to a design in the sic mundus lair, presumably drawn up by Adam. In so far as it has a purpose at this point it appears to be to return young Helge to 1953 after he is transported to 1986 by touching Jonas through the wormhole. As the portal is closed after his transportation I'm not sure he could get back otherwise. It doesn't seem to exist in 2019 anymore.

Clanpot Shake

shake shake!

I might be totally wrong on this but my read on the chair was that it was simply an earlier prototype of the suitcase time machine, and that Adam has been using the time cycles to recursively improve the technology, each iteration beginning from a more advanced baseline. I forget the exact words but something he says before sending Jonas back hints at this.

Yeah, Stranger Jonas refers to the chair as the first time machine, but I can't see how it is. The Tannhaus device is built from 1953 onwards to the specs Claudia gives Tannhaus. And it's completed in November 1986 after Jonas brings the older version to Tannhaus to fix. Then it's used for the first time to close the wormhole.

The chair isn't successfully used until the summer timeline in 1987, when Noah sends Helge back to 1986. Maybe Jonas is including the failed usages on Mads, Erik, and Yasin?

And both are built to specs designed by Adam/Stranger in the early 20th century. Presumably based on knowledge from the notebook based on Claudia's tapes in the post apocalypse.

So working out which is the earlier version is a mess. I'm not sure what that would even mean, given the causality presented.

I get confused with that, cause if the iterations are slowly improved each cycle, why does the actual labour of building the chair time machine still need to happen? The suit case and the one in the Sic Mundus lair already exist right? Shouldn't the chair be obsolete?

Also if the point of the chair is to build a time machine to send Helge back to 1953, why can't he use whatever method Noah is using? Noah's popping back and forth all the time. He could easily escort Helge back without the terrifying chair that bursts your eardrums and burns your eyes.

Yes. Presumably he's using the Tannhaus device at some point in its life cycle, because for the whole of season 2 the wormhole in the tunnel is closed I think.

I guess the purpose being to transport Helge back makes sense only from the point of view that this is a consequential action in the story. Mads, Erik, and Yasin travelling doesn't seem to affect anything. But without Helge going back to the 50s he can't grow to play his part in the 80s. And whilst he could go back via the device Adam and Noah know that he in fact did not.

Or it could be to do with whatever Adam means by "cycles". As yet unexplained. So far each event only happens once, even if the same character witnesses it multiple times over the course of their life. Maybe season 3 changes that.

The show, as presented so far, is a closed loop of causality. Completely deterministic. The only thing that says otherwise is Adam and he could just be lying for whatever reason.

I'm fascinated to see if, and how, they break the loop. If that is the way the universe "works", I don't understand how you could get a foot in the door, so to speak, because everything is always the same down to character motivations, the individual movements of atoms and the ordering of neurons firing in the brain.

It would take the appearance of a prime mover, no?

After 1 episode, it was very interesting to see a world without Jonas, and thinking through just how the past has been different in this world leading to all of the altered relationships. Ulrich cheats on his partner in every world it seems.

Had to have a chuckle when I saw Wöller still has an as yet unexplained injury, just a different one from what we're used to.

Speculation:
1. I'm guessing the scarman trio as Daniel Kaerwald, the last Kaerwald in the Jonasless timeline.
2. Jonas must have broken a loop somewhere because middle-aged Jonas wouldn't be thrown by Martha 2.

Didn't remember Daniel Kaerwald at all aside from him being Ines' father. He was the Chief of Police and made a few minor (to me, at first watch) appearances in Season 1 finale and parts of Season 2.

I didn't see this posted- someone on reddit made a family tree chart that shows the connections (that we know of so far) of the characters.

(spoilered just because)

I realized:
(season 2 spoilers)

Noah is Jonah's great-great uncle? His great-great grandma's brother?

Magnus is Franziska's distant cousin?

Helge is Noah's grandfather in law?

That chart hasn't been updated for season 3, it's missing a lot of (new) connections and tight loops.
