Poppy covered All the Things She Said recently and it's basically the same song as the original so if you want to give, I would guess, less money to tatu and their weird homophobic bullshit, you can now just listen to the Poppy version.

The biggest thing about Tatu was the return of Trevor Horn as a producer. Art of Noise long disappears and he comes back with an album for the Russian-market that explodes because of the lesbian fantasy is still taboo in anti-LGBTQ+ Russia, but it's girls and the general world zeitgeist (hot lesbians given a pass), so it's somehow okay.

Anyway, I agree. I remember importing their first album then the shift to digital made it easier. The Russian first album is so much superior with the cheesy Soviet-kitsch "Robot" and "Ja Tvoi Vrag" which weren't adopted/included into English. The record company in the US gave them a choice of three songs to cover and they never heard, they picked The Smiths cover that's on the English version.

I don't speak barely any Russian (as it shows above), but "All the Things She Said" is much more nuanced in Russian where the title is more along the lines is "I've Lost my Mind".

They got me into the cheesy Russian Eurodance craze that dominated over there, so I give them credit for opening that rabbit hole.

Their later releases were hit or miss for me. "All About Us" and "She Loves Me" was a grasp for a straws after it came out it was all for show. They tried to re-neg about being bi-sexual which no one bought, one of them had a kid and I haven't really follow them sense. I think "Cosmos" is their best song, it sounds crazy but it could be a They Might Be Giants song. It really has this simple yet deeper meaning I don't know if it's intended to be pulled off so well. Beliy Plaschuk, Fly on the Wall, Craving (I Only Want What I can't Have). It's a shame the original version of "A Simple Motion" wasn't ever properly released; just a stripped down version. One of the better tracks from the first era.

Anyone know what's growing Russia right now? I think there's a hyperpop movement growing but I haven't really checked that out. Right now we seem to be into Korea and the typical Latin-crossovers.

While not completely pop -- it's ghetto house, I'd recommend this short EP released last Friday from Japanese producer Kenmochi Hidefumi. He was signed by Nujabes, put in charge of finishing his last album and called a prodigy. His old stuff is mostly flamenco guitar (friend called it yoga music), then he was the brains behind Wednesday Campanella which achieved some degree of success in Japan, and now is back after 10+ years doing footwork and juke music. Thew new EP released is far more accessible and poppy while retaining the footwork aspects. PIYL: PC Music, AG Cook, etc. there's elements of Dilla in some songs and of course Nujabes.

I'll post more about Japanese alt-pop that isn't idol-based in the future. He's gaining momentum and producing for bigger acts now and has a sound pretty distinct once you listen to a few of his songs. I wouldn't be surprised to see much more productions from him in the coming year. His work ethic is strong and is catching the eyes of more Japanese pop stars.

no one has talked about the new Jessie Ware album in here which is a shame because I listened to it last night and it's stellar. Really fits right in with the other disco/dance revival albums we've gotten this year. You could fill a night in a club with just Dua, Gaga, and Ware, and you'd have a pretty killer playlist.

Not sure where to post this rambly thought but I was just looking at Blondie concert from last year and I was reflecting on how I like a lot of old music. This was just a novel thing when I was younger. My grandma got me into Sinatra, my mom and uncle got me into 60s rock, and I just had a natural affinity for the 80s. But as I get older so obviously does the music that was already "old" even when I was young and at least some of the artists I loved since my teenage years are still performing. Others like Tom Petty are no longer with us.

Pro-wrestling fan here and the business is not kind to older wrestlers. It's ironic that the "rock 'n' roll lifestyle" claims less lives than pro-wrestling used to as a lot of these music artists at least lived to a decent age. But my point is just that I hope these old groups and artists who are still touring do it because they love their fans and not because they're flat broke.

I remember Phil Oakey of The Human League talking about how all those hits they had and all that money they made was just...gone.

"Tell that to Zod's snapped neck!"

guys, I know we're in the middle of a massive pandemic and societal upheaval but I can't believe we missed the fifth anniversary of all of us listening to Emotion for the first time! (we could go by the official date but Japan was cool and got it months before and so once the first person here downloaded it and told everyone about it then we all had to get it.

What were we thinking back then...

the first shot across the bow:

Scarred Heart posted:

Carly Rae Jespen's album leaked and it's loving incredible. I feel like an rear end for writing her off now. If you like cheesy 80's R&B/Pop this is the album for you.

And then everyone caught on:

PUGGERNAUT posted:

I didn't think she could top Kiss but she totally did. It's magical.

TheIndividual posted:

The only song I don't like on the new CRJ is "LA Hallucinations", which is pretty bunk. The rest is extremely solid. Definite pop album of the year, so far.

"Boy Problems" is the best thing to come out of Daft Punk's recent extreme popularity. Sounds like something they coulda put on Discovery or Homework.
"Gimme Love" should be the next single. Instantly catchy, has the right amount of longing to make it a perfect song to play at like weddings and such. Such a nostalgic feeling when hearing that song, even though it's brand new. Great stuff.

nomapple posted:

Yeah the CRJ album is stunning. Amazed by how consistent it is for a 17 track monster. Seriously, wow.

I hope it gets the attention it deserves. 1989 has some massive songs but wasn't great as an album imo. I'm sure I'll start cherry picking tracks from Emotion eventually, but it's a great listen all the way through as well.

(this one's me:)

Yoshifan823 posted:

Alright, I basically spent the entire weekend listening to nothing but this album, so I have some more definitive thoughts than "oh snap this poo poo is dope".

I'd say the absolute peaks of the album are Your Type, which is a really Robyn-esque song that does the "Big Epic Chorus" thing as well as anything else I've heard, and Gimme Love, which grows on me every time I listen to it. Really Like You is still really catchy, and Run Away With You starts the album with a nice kick. All That and When I Needed Someone sound like songs that would fit right in on a John Hughes soundtrack (during the prom scene and end of the movie, respectively), and Boy Problems and Warm Blood are the most out-there sounding while still being listenable.

On the flip side, LA Hallucinations is terrible (whoever OKed that lyric about Buzzfeed and TMZ should be shot), and the rest are alright, but pretty skippable in the long run. Bonus track-wise, there's nothing quite on the level of New Romantics as a "how is this not a single/on the album" cut, but I really love Never Get to Hold You.

Overall, I think more songs from this album are going to enter my regular rotation than from 1989, and it will be a shame if Run Away with You doesn't make it onto the radio, because it's probably the most suited for radio play, and I'd love to see people pick up this album. Gimme Love could also raise some eyebrows, but I feel like if people didn't get Dancing on My Own on the charts, the best song (Your Type) probably won't either.

Escobarbarian posted:

Hahaha I just randomly wandered into this thread and thought gently caress it I'll check the CRJ album out why not and WOW this is fantastic

While I think the highs of 1989 are higher, Emotion is a better complete listen. Really looking forward to the eventual tour.

I love “if you know what I mean (do you know what I mean?)” as a lyric, there’s so many ways it can be taken. She could be putting on the full eyebrows-raised innuendo face or genuinely worried that she isn’t getting the point across and both would be well within the CRJ spectrum.
