I was watching some of Doink's early run and I got to wondering how many gimmicks there have been where the person comes off like a total goof but is a killer in the ring.

Kurt Angle at times and later day Mick Foley sort of fit the bill, but their goofiness was more earnest rather than being a way of playing mind games.

I feel like there has to be more.

You could maybe put Orange Cassidy in this? Less "goof" than "slacker" but they certainly push him as deadly when he tries.

It's wrapped up in some bad-to-terrible homophobic trappings, but "Exotic" Adrian Street (and for maybe three weeks, Rico Constantino) did the gimmick where they were sort of flouncey sissies up until the bell rang and then would immediately just start viciously clubbering. It's not exactly the same thing, but similar?

They also did it for like 2 weeks with Nikki Cross when she started teaming with Alexa.

She was the character she is now backstage and on the way to the ring, then she'd turn into Sanity Nikki until the match was over.

The start of Tajiris run in the WWE might count? He was essentially Regals comedy manservent, then went into the ring and tajiri'd the gently caress out of some poor bastard. Google tells me it was Crash Holly. If I'm honest what I mainly remember is Regals fantastic facial expressions as Regal realised that the man he'd been heaping with abuse was in fact a viciously competent wrestler.

So the magic of pro-wrestling is that a lot of it looks worse than it actually is but I've always been bad at telling what is bad and what just looks bad.

How bad were Austin's chairshots to Lita? Apparently even teh dirt sheets at the time were going off about how Austin went too far.

The thing people always get upset about with chairs is hitting somebody in the head and I don't think that happened here. Are those shots where they use the folded chair and just ram the edge of it down into you worked at all?

This may be too big a question, but I appreciate any help I can get. Is there a way to watch early ROH, as in before 2007? I was super interested in trying to follow everything back then when I was in HS but could only get my hands on the occasional match wmv through Kazaa or whatever. Does the Honor Club thing have old old stuff?

Watching you sleep.

Butt first, let's
check the feeds.

I think part of the trick with chairs besides head shots is like what part of the chair. Like if you hit them on the seat where it folds in that means you got some give. If you do it the reverse or on the back then I imagine its way more painful.

But like also, you can obviously just hit someone soft or hit someone hard. Its no different than like the difference between Shane McMahon's strikes and Low-Ki's.

Ooh, that's a good one that I never noticed before.

My favorite is that Kronik's entrance music is a blatant ripoff of "Love Dump" by Static-X, a song about scat fetishists. It's not quite what you're looking for because it's so obvious, but given the subject matter and relative obscurity, I think it belongs.

Look, Kronik being scat themed wrestlers makes about as much sense in their overall presentation as them being weed themed wrestlers, so maybe we just never got to the payoff?

I think it's because it makes Stone Cold look way more sadistic than they were trying to get at (this was during the first month of Austin's heel turn when they were trying hard to sell it). I mean, one can watch the video and take of it what you will. I think they went too far by having Austin strike her while she's over Matt Hardy's body. This is just a bad time in WWF's history where they felt the need to build heel heat by having male wrestlers attack women (or have a popular face attack an unpopular heel woman to build their popularity).

In hindsight I loved Austin as a heel in 2001, but the first few months of it were indeed really dodgy I think. Austin is a great performer and ultimately made a lot of it work later on, but at the same time it was always going to be a commercial disaster because most people were just not interested in booing him. They got desperate in trying to make it happen, but with The Rock gone they were now also drastically short of top-level faces, meaning we got nonsense like his beatdown of the Hardys and Lita, and later on Michael Cole of all people, in the middle of what should've been a star-making feud for Benoit and Jericho no less.

They seemed to have had no faith in Austin being able to deliver heel promos (or at least heel promos without getting cheered), so his heat apparently had to come from these highly questionable stunts. In retrospect, as much as I enjoyed heel Austin later on during the Invasion, it was a terrible idea to start things off by having him play fourth fiddle to Triple H, Vince, and Stephanie. Good thing they never did that again!!
