quote:

Radiation detectors across northern Europe have picked up a short-lived, non-dangerous release of radioactivity experts believe came from Russia. Authorities believe the leak, which was first detected in early June, is coming from western Russia. One possibility is that the test is in some way related to a new nuclear-powered cruise missile, which caused an accident in 2019 and several deaths.

The Associated Press reports that officials in Finland, Norway, and Sweden detected man-made radionuclides—that is, radionuclides that do not naturally occur in nature. According to the Barents Observer, Iodine 131 was detected by air monitoring stations at Svanhovd and Viksjøfjell, Norway, as well as a nuclear weapons monitoring facility at Svalbard. Analysis by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health indicates the source of the radiation is western Russia.

Iodine 131 is a radioisotope created as a result of nuclear fission, which is why scientists believe the radiation release is the result of an accident at a nuclear facility. According to the CDC, exposure to large amounts of Iodine 131 can cause burns to the eyes and skin. Iodine 131 ingested into the human body accumulates in the thyroid gland, causing thyroid cancer. Iodine 131 has a half-life of eight days, meaning it can disappear from the environment relatively quickly.

The amount of Iodine 131 released is considered “tiny” and not dangerous.

Finnish authorities also reportedly detected small levels of cobalt, ruthenium and cesium in mid-June. In late June, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization, an international organization that monitors the globe for signs of nuclear weapons tests, detected radioactive isotopes across southern Sweden.

It's a much more multilateral world than it was during the OG Cold War, with India-Pakistan-China having a lot of potential for thermonuclear Armageddon over border skirmishes and the water resources of the Indus river valley system.

were definitely more likely to have a second cold war around China than russia

except this time theres no real deeper ideological conflict since the entire world is dominated by capitalism, so at the end of the day it wont match the real stakes of the Cold War. itll be a largely fake facade of conflict while capitalists on both sides gladly hand each other billions back and forth generating Growth.

I disagree with that view on China, but let's assumed that going forward the world is dominated by a multi-polar order of capitalist states. They are not going to cooperate, that's just believing in ultra-imperialism 2.0. The last period of a multi-polar capitalist order ended in World War 1.

I guess everyone wrong back last month/week etc when China was our sole enemy that needed to be crushed. Either way, the situation is more like the 19th century than the Cold War where power blocs of Great Powers are angling for control over the world rather than a bipolar ideological conflict.

In this case though, Russia and China are clearly cooperating as well.

yeah its 19th century power blocs with nuclear weapons. so no way to explode the tension with an actual world war 3 (or if that does happen nothing really matters anymore and were all dead)

Basically, it is the power politics of the 1890s with no WW1 to cap it off. Naval buildups, colonial proxy wars, and shifting alliances are all in the cards though.

China and Russia cooperating was an incredible own goal on the part of the US. I wonder if having Estonia in NATO was worth it.

The US has done a lot to create a coherent anti-US bloc by implementing so many sanctions and declaring trade wars. Apparently, when enough countries are cut off from the centers of global finance, they will start working together to create alternatives.

Kaiser Wilhelm II, King George V, and Tsar Nicholas were literally cousins and still ended up fighting country destroying wars that ended with one of them dethroned and the other executed.

Putin is fighting for his wallet, his rule is all about throwing everything works at the wall and see what sticks. He can throw fear of gays, state capitalism, and nostalgia over the Second World War and see what works.

They are, but right now it is a good example of how it is going to every country that opposes us at the same time. Russia, China, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Syria etc etc will all take turns in the 24 hour news cycle.

The news is split between covering the Hong Kong state security law and Russian bounties.

President Donald Trump was not verbally briefed on reports Russia paid militants to kill US soldiers, said national security adviser Robert O'Brien, because of a lack of confidence in the intelligence.

The CIA officer decided the intelligence was not verified.
