Pretty much everything on this list is great and would crack a top 20 or so of the year for me. Truth be told, 2020 has been weaker than 2017-2019. There's been some heavy hitters this year so far, but by now the previous few years had delivered a higher number of what I'd consider truly fantastic releases. There's still the back half of the year still, so here's hoping. Some stand-outs would be: Earth Rot - Black Tides of Obscurity Nightwish - Human :||: Nature Alestorm - Curse of the Crystal Coconut Dark Forest - Oak, Ash & Thorn Dzö-nga - Thunder in the Mountains Marrasmieli - Between Land and Sky Falconer - From a Dying Ember Malist - To Mantle the Rising Sun Ruadh - Rock of the Clyde Graceless - Where Vultures Know Your Name The Night Flight Orchestra - Aeromantic Bütcher - 666 Goats Carry My Chariot Lovebites - Electric Pentagram Marko Hietala - Pyre of the Black Heart / Mustan sydämen rovio (album has both English and Finnish language versions) Volcandra - Into the Azure Vader - Solitude in Madness Cirith Ungol - Forever Black Liliac - Chain of Thorns (EP) Not all of these are gonna be on my AOTY list of course, but apart from Earth Rot and Nightwish being easy shoo-ins, I can't really narrow the rest down at this time.

I love that The Night Flight Orchestra exists. It's like reverse hippie death metal and I always imagine people in corpse paint gaily dancing along to the music. My standout album this year is still Alkymist's Sanctuary. The Dead and Draugr especially. Master Boot Record feels like YOSPOS metal, so that's nice as well. Bohren & Der Club of Gore isn't metal in the exact same way Night Flight Orchestra is not, but they released a pretty good album.
