So we're halfway through this absurd year and one way to maintain a sense of normalcy has been continuing to keep up with music. How have your years in metal gone so far?

This is my rough top 10:
Ulcerate - Stare Into Death and Be Still
Warp Chamber - Implements of Excrucation
Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin kynsi
Nechochwen/Panopticon split
Black Curse - Endless Wound
Esoctrilihum - Eternity of Shaog
Temple of Void - The World That Was
Elder - Omens
Spectral Lore & Mare Cognitum - Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine

Pretty much everything on this list is great and would crack a top 20 or so of the year for me.

Truth be told, 2020 has been weaker than 2017-2019. There's been some heavy hitters this year so far, but by now the previous few years had delivered a higher number of what I'd consider truly fantastic releases. There's still the back half of the year still, so here's hoping.

My top 10 of the year so far, unordered other than 1 and 2:
Internal Rot - Grieving Birth (honestly probably my favorite grind record)
Häxanu - Snare of All Salvation
Infant Island - Beneath
Caskets Open - Concrete Realms of Pain
Dødskvad - Krønike I
Der Rote Milan - Sinis
Blasphemer - The Sixth Hour
Medico Peste - ב: The Black Bile
Sorry... - Bereavement of Existence
Fluisteraars - Bloem

EP shoutouts go to all 4 Omnikinetic releases, and the Hyperdontia EP

Probably:

Black Curse - Endless Wound
Perdition Temple - Sacraments of Descension
Graceless - Where Vultures Know Your Name
Sinister - Deformation of the Holy Realm
Internal Rot - Grieving Birth
Afterbirth - Four Dimensional Flesh
Earth Rot - Black Tides of Obscurity
Violent Hammer - Riders of the Wasteland
Wombcage - Grafting The Rot
Meth Leppard - Woke

At some point I should probably listen to something other than death and grind

There's a lot I need to catch up on, but five that stood out to me so far:

Afterbirth - Four Dimensional Flesh
Hazzerd - Delirium
Internal Rot - Grieving Birth
Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin kynsi
Vengeful Spectre - Vengeful Spectre

Yes.
Not a huge amount of super good poo poo has crossed my path yet this year, but there's been a whole drat bunch of like "really solid" level releasses. Some stand-outs would be:

Earth Rot - Black Tides of Obscurity
Nightwish - Human :||: Nature

Alestorm - Curse of the Crystal Coconut
Dark Forest - Oak, Ash & Thorn
Dzö-nga - Thunder in the Mountains
Marrasmieli - Between Land and Sky
Falconer - From a Dying Ember
Malist - To Mantle the Rising Sun
Ruadh - Rock of the Clyde
Graceless - Where Vultures Know Your Name
The Night Flight Orchestra - Aeromantic
Bütcher - 666 Goats Carry My Chariot
Lovebites - Electric Pentagram
Marko Hietala - Pyre of the Black Heart / Mustan sydämen rovio (album has both English and Finnish language versions)
Volcandra - Into the Azure
Vader - Solitude in Madness
Cirith Ungol - Forever Black
Liliac - Chain of Thorns (EP)

Not all of these are gonna be on my AOTY list of course, but apart from Earth Rot and Nightwish being easy shoo-ins, I can't really narrow the rest down at this time.

The downside to posting your favorites of the year later than everyone else is that there's a lot of repeats.

Ulcerate - Stare Into Death and Be Still
Torture Tomb - Killing to See How it Feels
Fluids - Fluids of Death Compilation
Scarab - Martyrs of the Storm
Xibalba - Anos en Inferno
Fistula - The Process of Opting Out
Defeated Sanity - The Sanguinary Impetus
Syphilic - Empty Nest
Antichrist Siege Machine - Filth of the World
Kombat - New Dimensions of Pain
Internal Rot - Grieving Birth
Utzalu - The Grobian Fall

Die Rettung fuer die Landwirte:
I love that The Night Flight Orchestra exists. It's like reverse hippie death metal and I always imagine people in corpse paint gaily dancing along to the music.

My standout album this year is still Alkymist's Sanctuary. The Dead and Draugr especially.

Master Boot Record feels like YOSPOS metal, so that's nice as well.

Bohren & Der Club of Gore isn't metal in the exact same way Night Flight Orchestra is not, but they released a pretty good album.

Haven't watched those but I know they're by the same dudes who are doing that "WW2 in real time" series (weekly episodes framed like a newscast about what happened in the war the corresponding week) which is pretty cool.

Edit: Also they're definitely not fash or wehraboos, they got special episodes ripping on the guilty parties for crimes against humanity and so on.

Oh yeah, Indy Neidell is an insanely good pop historian, he did the same thing over the course of 4+ years for WW1 and did a great series called Between 2 Wars about the interwar period.
