I enjoyed the plinkett reasoning that Titanic was retroactively turned into a romance movie from a disaster thriller because Celine Dion and James Horner wrote up a hit song and the whole project got rearranged from James Cameron's usual filmmaking style to accomodate it.

Our school went to see Titanic when it came out (we saw one movie every year, that year it was Titanic because it was so huge) and all the girls thought it was the most beautiful thing they had ever seen while almost all the boys loving haaaaated it

I, a 13-year old boy at the time, thought it was ok but not really my thing

I like it more these days, partially because Avatar really re-calibrated what "the worst James Cameron movie" actually means

It's a shame Breakpoint or whatever the follow-up was called again managed to screw it up.

I feel like SR4 is a weird game to use for this because random ultraviolence in it ends up feeling kind of empty and boring, and while you can go around slaughtering pedestrians, the game's really more focused on the story missions and you can very easily beeline from one to the next without hurting anything. Hell, vehicles end up feeling sort of pointless after you get the superpowers in it, because leaping across the map Crackdown-style is both quicker and more fun.

i think part of that feeling is its basicaly just takes place in the matrix instead weird hellworld saints row normally takes place it. nothing in the world is real and it basicaly makes all the big booms feel hollow.

breakpoint is weird because writing wise it walks back on alot of political/social issues that wildlands fumbles with. they set in on a fictional elon musk island and make you fight mercs/traitor spec ops assholes who jerk off the david grossman philosophy. i also think it does a bunch of stuff mechanically better than wildlands. the issue is they were clearly trying to make division type game with it and that doesnt work that well just because of the moment to moment gameplay/gunplay/feel. it has the issue that many Ubisoft games outside of the AC series have. there are tons of cool dynamic open world moments but many of the structure set piece missions fail to stick the landing because of how the world is designed and such.

Haven't watched the video yet but I will defend Titanic until the day I die.

Titanic has always been something I regard as extremely competent which isn't the same as 'good' but certainly isn't the same as 'bad.' The leads are fine. Billy Zane is a sneering delight. Jack's Extremely Italian friend at the beginning really cracks me up. Nobody can shoot a claustrophobic action scene filled with water like Cameron. It has the annoying Hollywood thing of 'poor people are the ACTUAL happy ones.' The ship sinking is genuinely impressive because few can do spectacle like Cameron. It absolutely got too much crap because it was 'for gurls.'

I just personally don't want to watch it without the RiffTrax if I can help it. And I certainly never need to hear Celine Dion try her vocal Barbara Streisand cosplay ever again.

I didn’t realize it had brownface which yikes, but other than that I think it really holds up. Even Michael Richards came to do some of the DVD commentary and this was when he was still riding high on Seinfeld and pre racial epithet. The commentary is worth it to hear Al talk about he rapidly went from the toast of Orion to them not returning his calls.

He is, but he's mixed race and naturally fairly light skinned so a lot of folks still consider it brownface. It's pretty controversial as there's less of a clear answer in his case.

But I was talking about UHF where the white director dresses in brownface for the Ghandi 2 parody bit.

ehhhh, i mean the joke is that it’s a stupid idea for a movie, but the fact that ghandi is played by a white guy in brownface who never appears at any other point isn’t really a part of the joke. It doesn’t need to be justified as a woke meta-joke it’s a caveat to an otherwise fantastic movie that’s worth reflecting on. i still absolutely love the movie despite that tho
