Yeah I just bought a bunch of the most common sizes for my truck from bolt depot and am very happy. Easy website to navigate and good pricing. Combine it with a few harbor freight organizers.

The gold standard would be a Darex: https://www.darex.com/shop/sharpeners/v-390-drill-sharpener/

What he said, but I want to point out: Do Not buy the Harbor Freight version. That thing sucks.

Not so much on mid-size stuff, especially if you're buying top-quality bits (like Norseman or Cle-Line/etc). It's worth sharpening, say, a 3/8" Norseman, or adjusting the point angle for use on AL or SS or whatever. I use my Drill Doctor regularly to split points too. It's tricky to do on a grinder.

Well it seems HF is attempting to do something I never thought would happen. Past couple ads had no "freebie" item. This month they had the magnetic tray. Instead of free they are charging $0.69 for it. Wonder what MBA came up with that idea.

There’s only 1 thing in the “free” category on HFQPDB. All the usually freebies are “under $1” now. https://www.hfqpdb.com/gallery/under1

Makes sense though. My local store is pretty cleaned out. Lots of empty shelf space.

I'm not surprised at all. Think about it: global freight has been a dumpster fire. 80% of air freight or something like that (don't remember exactly) was being done on commercial passenger flights. Those aren't happening so much now, so the rest of the the shipping industry is trying to deal with the lowered capacity. Yeah, of course HF isn't using air freight for free flashlights, but this stuff impacts the global chain, greatly increasing prices so........free/cheap stuff from china can't be free or cheap when everyone is bidding up even the slow boat shipping.

I've done this before, and I liked the plastic Rhino Ramps when I had them. I'd definitely put the ramps facing uphill, not down.

Harbor Freight has added an additional model to their jack stand recall, and will now offer cash refunds or store credit for any of their jack stands, if you feel unsafe about them.

https://www.harborfreight.com/js-de...14,387,685&uid=

Here's the text of the email I got:

quote:

To the Harbor Freight Community:

I'm writing to apologize. I often reach out to tell you about Harbor Freight's commitment to quality and all the investments we've made to deliver quality tools at the lowest prices. Your trust matters deeply to me and I'm proud of how far we've come. So when we have a product recall, it hurts.

A few months ago, we recalled our Pittsburgh 3 ton and 6 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 61196 and 61197) due to a manufacturer's defect. We asked customers to return them and receive a gift card that could be used to purchase replacement jack stands. I felt terrible about that recall because you should never have a concern about the safety of any of our products.

Today, I feel even worse. I'm disappointed and embarrassed because we've identified a welding defect in a small number of the Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKU 56373) that replaced the recalled jack stands. We're now adding these jack stands to our recall. Unfortunately, this defect wasn't discovered during the initial recall investigation. If you own these jack stands or any of the jack stands in our original recall, whether or not you have had an issue with them, please stop using them immediately and bring them back to your local Harbor Freight Store for a full cash refund or store credit (see details here).

We have investigated all of our other Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 56372 and 57308) as well as the Pittsburgh 6 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56368, 56369 and 56370) and Pittsburgh 12 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56374 and 56375) and did not find the defect. Although none of these other jack stands are being recalled, if you own any of them and have any concern whatsoever, please bring them back and we'll give you a full cash refund or store credit for those as well.

I want to apologize to all of our customers. While we've dramatically grown our team of engineers and inspectors, and intensified our tests and inspections, I assure you that the lessons learned from this will drive further improvement.

As the owner and founder of Harbor Freight, I want you to know that we stand behind every product we sell and that safety will always be our top priority.

Sincerely,

Eric Smidt

Rhino ramps. Just make sure they are on solid ground and not straddling a crack/sunken part of the driveway.

I was thinking about getting the store credit for mine but when I checked out a few other options online they all have the same design so I'm suspicious that they are built by the same manufacturer. Is there a best type of jack stand design? I've seen some mention of better ones have a pin in them that you place after setting them up but I'm not sure how much better that is.

It looks like this is the failure point. So I guess avoid this design, which is basically every inexpensive jack stand.

I have some ones from ~2007 and honestly I might just weld a plate over that weld and call it done.

I’d just take them back for store credit... unless you’re a professional welder, I’d be reticent to risk my life on end user modifications

The replacements aren't any better. Are the replacement's replacements going to be any better? I don't know if I would do it but bending it back into shape and welding a big plate over it will probably still be an improvement over a new one even if the welds aren't great.

I thought I read somewhere the safety issue was due to the way some manufacturing tooling wore over time, leading to a creep in some dimension that lead to a reduction in strength? They're doing the recall because those were the parts made in the window of time that used that tooling, it's not the design that's bad (arguably).

That’s fair, I forget the target audience here. I wouldn’t do it personally as I’d be afraid of overheating spots or changing the grain structure so it’s weak in a new direction and causing an unintended deficiency, but I also suck at welding.

So if the stands split along the middle like that, I’m assuming that would knock the pawl cattywampus and the load would drop. Would a locking pin guard against that failure mode?

E: Looking at it again I guess not, it’d probably just be a sudden load shift, though that could knock other poo poo loose

I mean, obviously the real solution is a garage lift system, but until then...

If y'all have welders, why not jack up the car, then weld a support structure underneath it to hold it up? Make sure to buy a plasma cutter so you can disassemble it easier to lower the car when you are done.

That was last week. Now there's weld defects on the replacements, an expanded recall, and a voluntary "if you don't feel safe, bring back any of our jack stands"

I thought most inexpensive jack stands were four legs made of angle iron connected at the bottom with some flat plate barely welded into place.
