Take Over's music is pretty good but lyrically it's probably one of the lower quality fight songs. I do appreciate that it's kind of a 180 degree change in attitude from Last Surprise befitting the game calling itself Royal. It fits the Post Casino Squad way more.

But Reach Out To the Truth and Mass Destruction still the best

Thankee kindly.
Honestly I just appreciate that P5's lyrics actually make some sort of sense. Just reading the lyrics for Reach Out to the Truth is baffling:

Now I face up, I make head
I bleach out cock and bull of this globe
Thinking and seeing on the whole moment Now It's on

As purely just a battle theme I do have to admit that Take Over is extremely powerful. Still like Wiping All Out more personally though

May the sacred flame guide me... Or something like that.
I like Last Surprise way more than Take Over. Reach Out For the Truth and Time to Make History are both nice but I prefer the latter because the former grates on me pretty easily.

Mass Destruction is the best, Wiping All Out a close second.

I will say, the Royal changes to the Okuumura Boss fight are so utterly pointless . They added Cognitive Haru to the boss fight (even if that makes the earlier scene make less sense), solely to give Okumura more press turns before you easily wipe the board because baton pass is incredibly strong in this game. Oh they've also got a phase where they becomes a robot but you just have to burn through their HP in 2 turns or survive their self destruct which maybe 70% of your max HP. It just felt like extra padding to a boss fight that was already full of it. Especially since AoE buffs in this game have such long animations and he loves to cast them it was just running out the clock, but not in a meaningful way, I still finished the fight with 17 minutes to spare.

Interesting in hearing your thoughts after Valentine's Day, if you get there.

Aeon was maxed as the third girlfriend, and I should have just finished the normal ending requirement 11 days before XMas. Due to the immediate time skip I sort of wish I'd waited a few days longer and tried to get farther in Death's SLink while reading my last few books at night.
Saved at the prompt, but it went to a long VN sequence so I alt+f4'd out. Too tired to watch more teen drama.

Since Golden ending is at least pathed to, I'll try to remember to report back when I get around to whatever happens in that spoiler text.

Wiping All Out is fantastic not just as music, but as specifically a normal encounter theme. Something that Reach Out To The Truth and (especially) Mass Destruction fumble is that, because this song is gonna be playing approximately a million times over a hundred+ hour game, and it's going to play from the top every single time, that opener has to stand a lot of play.

Wiping All Out is the first one that really figures that one out. Time To Make History understands it, too, even if I don't really like it as much. And Last Surprise nails it, of course.

That's onto something, I think, though the opening of Mass Destruction is memetic for a reason, that poo poo's great. Like, FFXIII has one of that series' best tracks, period in Blinded by Light, but it's a terrible main battle theme because the opening bars are so slow and the good poo poo with the violin is so deeply buried (a full minute into it] in the track you straight-up won't hear it most of the time.

That is true but I think it's kind of a false equivalence to compare the two. Persona always finds stuff to do between main games to keep in the public eye but the only outright new thing SMT has gotten since Apocalypse was the gacha game.

Persona 4 and 5 especially are like, gathering points for prominent Japanese voice talent. I barely know any Japanese voice actors but I know a ton of the ones playing the main cast of 4 and 5.

Pretty much every Persona that has had VA's had pretty significant names (off the top of my head and just the playable main cast; I'm probably forgetting at least a couple of big ones and excluding the remakes/spin-offs which added characters)
  • P2 Duology has: Takehito Koyasu, Akiko Yajima, Kosuke Toriumi, Hiroko Konishi, Tomoe Hanba, Joji Nakata, Toshiyuki Morikawa.
  • P3 has: Hikaru Midorikawa, Rie Tanaka, Kosuke Toriumi (again), Megumi Ogata, Mamiko Noto, Maaya Sakamoto, Kazuya Nakai, Chiwa Saito.
  • P4 has: Showtaro Morikubo, Yui Horie, Kappei Yamaguchi, Ami Koshimizu, Tomokazu Seki, Rie Kugimiya, Romi Park.
  • P5 has: Jun Fukuyama, Mamoru Miyano, Nana Mizuki, Ikue Otani, Tomokazu Sugita, Rina Sato, Aoi Yuuki (who voiced the delivery girl in the P4 Anime), Haruka Tomatsu, Soichiro Hoshi.

Is Persona 4 more popular in the West than in Japan? I just always heard P4 was what really catapulted Persona into the juggernaut of success it has become.

I just find this peculiar since it came out in 2008? I remember a long time ago being a Final Fantasy IX stan and attributing its lack of fame to the fact it came out at the end of the PS1's lifespan and the PS2 was right around the corner. But if P4 came out on the PS2 in 2008 the next gen of consoles weren't around the corner, they were here and in force. 2008 is he year MGS4 came out on PS3 and I think the 360 had been out since 2006.

Thank God it did so well in spite of all this.

Persona 3 was the real kickstarter, but even though P4 was a success, the franchise was always still a bit niche despite spawning a billion spinoffs.

Persona 5 was the first real blockbuster game that really put the series on the map.

The PS2 was a force of nature which was great for P4, not so much for FFIX. And the 599$ USD work a second job bluray meme machine was no PS2. Different sales metrics for success for FF and Persona though obviously

Persona 3 was absolutely the one that did that in both countries. It was a tremendously unexpected success and was even received positively enough in America that they released the improved version which is pretty drat uncommon for that time frame.

Persona 4 came out to a higher start but that is because Persona 3 was so popular. The fact that P4 was also well received helped Persona 5, and Persona 5 was well received enough that P6 will probably do better than P5 unless it looks goddamn awful.

I also think that, far as I know, it's changed a little because Megaten as a whole is more of a known quantity in Japan. P3 and (to a greater extent) P4 was what really set Atlus and Megaten as A Thing outside of a small consumer base in the west, while in Japan... I mean, they'd been around and fairly consistent since the NES days or so.

In Japan it's comparable to... maybe Bioware launching Mass Effect, or Ubisoft launching Assassin's Creed? A name that people would have vaguely known finally hitting it big, rather than the huge hit out of effectively nowhere it was in the west.

I won't even lie. I spent a good few years confusing Persona and Pandemonium just because of their names. Which makes less sense when younger me had grabbed an ISO of Eternal Punishment and played several hours of it before it got too hard for my patience. Weirdly I did know about SMT due to SNES fan translations, though I never checked them out.

The release of P3+FES is what reminded me about the franchise and got me to pre-order P4 and eventually snap up the earlier games on PSP/Vita. Didn't have a PS2 till later on, so Nocture and DDS' limited runs sold for way over MSRP and kept me from checking the main entries out.

I have no idea how I missed this, but this is a separate but related problem: when your main battle theme starts too slow, to the point where you'll rarely get to the good part. And yeah, Blinded By Light is a perfect example. I'd also put forward FFVII and Chrono Trigger's main battle themes, which just have too much leadup for you to get to the fun parts most of the time.

I think regular P5 is a masterclass in how to do a good main battle theme. Because Last Surprise has a strong enough start to avoid the Blinded By Light problem, but also isn't hard enough to have the Mass Destruction problem where it just gets annoying to only hear that opening so much (if you want a non-SMT example, say hello to the field battle theme for FFXIV's latest expansion). And of course, Last Surprise benefits from them setting it up so that the chorus comes in for your first All-Out Attack, so you'll usually hear the good part of the song anyway.
