Battle for the Grid has somehow become the fighting game I'm playing the most now, I don't even like power rangers please send help. It's just so fun to mess around in, the mechanics are easy to pick up without lacking a ton of depth in terms of setups or technical things you can mess with, there's characters of varying effectiveness for most play styles. I followed Mighty Keef on twitter after seeing a few of his videos and he seems like kind of a dick. I don't remember what specifically he said but there were enough iffy things that I unfollowed after a bit. Last KOF tournament I saw here in SoCal top 8 were all Mexicans that came up to participate. Seems weird to be a racist in a scene that is biggest in Latin America.

so is this pretty much the end of the FGC being a "big" thing? like, it seems like a large majority of the "famous" players are horrible pieces of poo poo, with SonicFox being the only one coming to mind who hasn't either been directly accused of something, or called out for knowing and not speaking up. Smash is just flat-out done and not likely to come back. EVO is probably done for the foreseeable future. with all of that, there's not gonna be a whole lot of incentive for Capcom or Namco to keep their leagues/tours going, either. obviously this isn't going to kill everyone's locals, FGC-adjacent poo poo like saltybet is probably going to hang around, etc, but... i'm not the only one getting grim visions of a future where every game is played in con bathrooms and not just Melty, right?

"Anime Culture" is not the issue there and it's trying to to hand-wringlingly blame something outside of the issues with the events and culture rather than acknowledge that. Even beyond that 'anime' isn't going to leave fighting games because fighting games are quite literally built on the backs of being anime as poo poo. Even the ones based on literal superheroes are anime as poo poo. Mortal Kombat is like that cheesy faux- anime where someone who has only vaguely heard of Japan from hong-kong movies tries to make their own Japanese Anime featuring characters named Kitana and Rayden. You can discuss the culture of immense cheesecake in fighting games but that also isn't 'anime' particularly as every single western fighting game (except maybe Them Fightin' Herds?) has its fair share of of that as well. If upon hearing that there is widespread systemic abuse your first thought it "it must be the anime" and not "It must be the long-term failures of people both to enact rules to protect people and to report things that they witnessed to authorities" then you are just searching for something to blame that isn't the failure of the community as a whole. Shockingly people abuse other people even in settings that are not anime adjacent.
