hooman posted:I don't understand the clownfish thing with Margaret Atwood. Is it some Finding Nemo reference? I think, from context of it being arguing with terfs, its to do with the fact that Clownfish change their sex. From wikipedia (anemonefish being another name for clownfish): Wikipedias page on Clownfish posted:In a group of anemonefish, a strict dominance hierarchy exists. The largest and most aggressive female is found at the top. Only two anemonefish, a male and a female, in a group reproduce – through external fertilization. Anemonefish are sequential hermaphrodites, meaning they develop into males first, and when they mature, they become females. If the female anemonefish is removed from the group, such as by death, one of the largest and most dominant males becomes a female. The remaining males move up a rank in the hierarchy. I remember this because its been brought up (jokingly) as a nit-picky gotcha about Finding Nemo. When Nemos mother died, technically Marlin should have become female. As to exactly what they mean by it, I dont know, but if its terfs I guarantee it'll be poorly thought out, dehumanising and terrible.

The replies to the original tweet are surprisingly good. I was expecting a wave of HAHA MILLENNIALS ARE STUPID but it's all people pointing out that using the internet to find answers to problems is an underappreciated skill and younger Millennials and Gen Zs are killing at it. Seriously, I've given up on the number of times I've told a coworker or family member to google something if they don't know it. My mother acts like I performed magic when I fix something comperty, even though I tell her over and over that all I did was google the problem. Last Thanksgiving my father was away, and apparently no one else knew how to carve a turkey. Ten minutes of watching different relatives gather around the bird like they had to perform open heart surgery, and I gave up and pulled up a video on youtube. Hell, 30 minutes ago I was in a meeting where no one knew what an acronym meant until a couple of us pulled it up on our phones. Learning how to access information is a life skill.

"Don't ask me when you have problems, I have a droid. Ask your other daughter, she has an iphone as well." Not to mention how many times I've had to sort out computer things, god.

It's a shame "I can use google and figure out how to do a thing if I don't already know how to do it" is not a substitute for qualifications on a CV, despite being the better answer.
