It's definitely the best thing going on the empire side, but...c'monnn man, you can't say you prefer them to the Yang gang goofing off, passing a bottle of something, and trying not to get glared at too hard by Murai while in staff meetings or on the bridge.

I was gonna also mention Poplan & Attenborough but thought they more pure comedy essentially, even though it's some of the best comedy ever. Poplan + Reuenthal up there as favorite characters for sure, but just how important Ruenenthal and Mittermeyer are to the overall direction of story.

They do have the most poignant moments in the whole series too. Definitely the best characters.

Easily one of my favorite moments of entire show is the night Reuenthal first meets Reinhard and Kircheis in his attempt to save Mittermeyer's life. And Reinhard decides to tell him of his dreams, Kircheis turns to glare at Reuenthal and read his response.

Also looool

And does he have one fake eye? Feel like they never fully state that, only saying his mother attempted to harm him as child and then 'never picked him up again.'

Reuenthal’s eyes come from his mom and the guy she cheated on his dad with. She tried to gouge one out because it was evidence she likely cheated

Reuenthal was born with heterochromia, so not artificial eyes. IIRC, the only character shown with artificial eyes in the OVA was Oberstein.

I don't know if this was ever officially stated, but I always assumed that Oberstein's eyes recorded video, possibly including sound. Was that the case, or were they just regular artificial eyeballs?

My original character do not steal includes fake eyeballs with the same weapon as Ansbach's ring.

Word yeah I knew they had mentioned something like that actually but forgot about it. I'll really have to rewatch the entire thing again knowing all the characters, they just throw so much poo poo at you the first 30 episodes and even beyond that it's too much remember with the sheer amount of characters.

Poplan just told Schenkopp he can take Reuenthal since he doesn't want the ladies of the Empire hating him. This loving show.

As pleasant as Mittermeyer is I still haved zero respect for he and Reunthal because they are high ranking aristocrats being waited upon hand and foot by a legion of servants: pick your poo poo up yourself you lazy gits.

I say that and I still love everything Yang does, while he is a human disaster, he doesn't use his position to demand labor from his social inferiors, instead they by and large serve him out of a sense of love and pity.

To be fair to Mittermeyer, his family was normal middle class with no noble title - he earned his position on raw merit - and he actually gives a poo poo about fairness and the welfare of the lower classes.

Reuenthal is just kind of a prick.

Yeah but Yang never picked up poo poo either, mans lived in filth till Julian showed up.

Reuenthal feels he has earned his position, unlike the aristocrats before him.

I could be remembering incorrectly, but I believe that's correct. Of the top of my head there is that implication when he takes one of his eyes out after meeting with the thought police guy that i can't remember the name of.

Real sad hours after just finishing. Tried watching the prequel + plan to slowly rewatching series to catch what I missed/the early contributions of Empire admirals/early plot, making me more sad.

I think the last ~30 episodes or so it slows down a lot. The first 50something episodes are my favorite of the plot overall for sure.

In my search for images from LOTGH you obviously come across stuff like tumblr/other posts/etc and the relationship of Reinhard & Kircheis is always the one brought up but never Kircheis & Annerose, which I mean clearly he was in love with her and Reinhard knew that as well. Maybe Reinhard is gay and loved Kircheis beyond their friendship, but I always saw Kircheis as just being devoted to Reinhard since childhood and his true love Annerose telling him to take care of her brother + sheer ambition of Reinhard that has even the best admirals awestruck made Kircheis believe they could accomplish the incredibly lofty dreams he had. I never saw the OVA's prior to Conquest, so I don't know if any type of romance happens between them but I wouldn't think they would have something in OVA and not anime itself. It's an extremely unique kind of uh 'love-triangle.'

My god, it's full of cat!

I feel Reinhard is portrayed as too socially immature to grasp romantic tension that's happening around him, and I don't blame fanartists for ignoring Annerose given she's not given much as a character. All the meaningful looks between Kircheis and Annerose can't possibly attract the same attention as Reinhard playing with a lock of Kircheis' hair.

Fan art rarely matches the actual relationships in a series. If fanart was accurate, then Supernatural is a show about incestuous brothers.

Kircheiss and Annerose both loved each other, and that's one of the reasons she is depressed for most of the series. She got the person she was in love with killed because she told him to protect his brother.

I don't think I could watch all of Neue These after having watched all of the original. Maybe the battles will be interesting enough to warrant checking it out in future when it's almost finished? I don't know I hate how the characters look in this digital anime, it's like the original can get across their personality to you to individualize everyone, whereas with digital everyone blends together fully. I guess a different type of anime with more action I would not mind as much, but the slow pace & sheer amount of characters highlighted the exact reasons I hate new animation.

They had the first logh book on audible for 5 bucks so I picked it up. The prologue is my favorite episode (the history doc Julian watches on the way to phezzan, explaining the fall of the galactic federation and the rise of the the goldenbaum dynasty). The narrator is an old, history lesson rear end man. I love it so much.

Yeah definitely a top episode, doesn't Poplan ask him if he's watching porn mid-episode or something and they just keep watching history channel.

Been watching some of the Gaiden episodes last couple days. Gaiden1 the first one I saw with Reinhard & Kircheis' first assignment, was as good as anything in the series. Though this murder investigation one is a bit slower.
But it's awesome to see their beginnings in the military and how it's been them vs the universe from the beginning.
I needed some Kircheis positivity in these dark days.

I need a sequel where Felix Mittermeyer brings peace for all times; his father Reuenthal's ability, Reinhard's child for a best friend, and Mittermeyer& his wife (the most innocent person in the entire show) raising him with their morals. He's too powerful.

Giving this show another try, I think I tried it a decade+ ago when there was a simulwatch thread

Just finished the available audiobooks (up to book three). It’s very nice, I love the narrator, the beginning of the first book is excellent since it basically the history of the human species up to the beginning of the series (basically, the documentary episode with Julian, and the ep of Reinhardt reading the history of the goldenbaum dynasty material (also my favorite eps)).

What it hammers home is the original ova series is not only a superb adaptation of the material, but in many ways is superior. The characterizations are so much deeper, you get a feel for these numerous characters on both sides that’s lacking in the books. That the show was adapted from the material is felt but it’s built upon and feels richer and more fulfilled because of it. Now that I’m out of audio books I basically just wanna throw the show on while I work, since ive seen it multiple times I don’t have to pay as much attention.

That’s pretty much it, I don’t feel like I’ve read or heard anything more than is in the series so far, and I just feel like watching it more again.

The third book ends on the fortress battle and aftermath, and it’s just so much more impactful in visual form.

They keep putting the title cards up so keep with it. I was already hooked by that point but ep 14 is pretty good and if you can get through the second arc (ends ep 26, which corresponds to the end of book 2) and if it’s not drawing you in by that point you’ve really given it a good go.

Gaius Marius
Oct 9, 2012

It's probably worth noting that the show is actually pretty good about consolidating it's cast and reintroducing them when needed, you're not gonna get some nobody mentioned in the first episode showing up 100 episodes later unannounced to blow up the FPA capital or something.

DamnGlitch
Sep 2, 2004

And not that anyone watching the first time wants to hear it but it’s rewarding to rewatch because tons of characters that become important or are part of an important event are usually introduced way way earlier.

Merkats in the first ep is a good example.
