I don't have any issues with school zones, I just don't necessarily think they should be permanent when the technology exists to have them on at times they are needed, and then to allow the road to revert to the originally specified speed limit when they are not.

What if all roads had variable speed limits, we can finally let the algorithm decide who lives and who dies directly!

Make all roads into treadmills and they move forwards or backwards depending on the car to keep em going the speed limit at all times

Do this with runways too but instead of cars it's airplanes.

You should be mad at the people making you drive to work at 5:30 in the morning, not the people making that drive a couple minutes slower.

Also, there is value in having the rules be simple and consistent. Is it "optimal" in terms of through-put? No, but having to install that variable speed system, have someone manage it so it doesn't apply on holidays and over the summer and such, having people fight traffic tickets ("but officer, my clock said it was 7:29, not 7:30!") does have cost. A couple minute delay for a small number of drivers during off-peak hours frankly isn't a big deal on a societal level.

Random speed traps are bad and designed to randomly gently caress over drivers with fines; having speed zones around schools be permanent is just going to make spots where cops post up to give massively inflated tickets.

The people who blow past school zones when children are actually there are probably going to continue to do so and, based on the number of child pedestrian deaths per year, are probably the only (or nearly only) source of said deaths.

Also yes I drive past a lot of school zones pretty much constantly. Enacting this law here would probably double my commute to work because of how the school zones and traffic lights are situated alongside how random slow spots and congestion in traffic work

Not sure how a permanent speed limit in a specifc, marked area is more of a speed trap than a variable speed limit in that same area, and if there are going to be places where cops post up to enforce speeding limits, I'd kinda rather it be near where small children are at risk for roaming into the street.

Besides, if they're always there, it's even less of a speed trap! Wow!

How long is your commute? "Doubling" your commute is very different if your commute is five minutes versus if it's two hours. Don't get me wrong, I hate driving, and would be pissed if school zones cost me a significant amount of time. But is it really that much time?

Be mad at the people who've decided that for some dumb reason commuting to work isn't actually work and has to be performed off-the-clock. I've never understood that: if it facilitates me being productive, it's work, and I should be paid for it.
