K is for Knell from ABC of Death anthology

I quite liked the ABCs of Death but one of them, I think it's maybe I for Injection, is just straight up "look at this woman tied up in my bathtub while I poison her and she pukes and shits everwhere and finally dies" torture porn and it's really unlike anything else in the anthology, which has body horror and gross poo poo and farts and the awful masturbation Hunger Games, but that one is the worst and really sticks with me

That one falls strongly into the "putting in very explicit words something I didn't want to acknowledge that I've been thinking about for months" camp, those songs that are just raw and painful and you hate the feelings they make you feel but no-one else is loving saying it as beautifully so you listen to them for two straight hours, and yeah anyone who can pluck my actual nightmares out of my head and put them on screen deserves a prize

Just as everyone is getting used to T Rex with Feathers, they've decided that no, they didn't have them. Because larger animals would have feathers to keep themselves warm, and Rex's lived in warmer climates. Plus there have not been any indication of feathers in an rex skin imprints.

They could have them as babies then lose them as they get bigger and more able to keep heat.

Usually the nastiest, killiest viruses don't evolve in whatever it is they're killing. This is why things like swine flu are so nasty; human flu doesn't want to kill you for exactly that reason so it usually doesn't unless you're dealing with some other issue. Mostly you'll just have a lovely few days or a week or two and then you'll be fine. Same with swine flu for pigs; it doesn't do much other than make them miserable for a while and then they're fine.

But when swine flu mutates just enough to infect a human it isn't where it belongs so it fucks you up really badly. HIV succeeded in spreading because it takes so long to kill its host but really doesn't have much effect early on. The current thought is that it originated in chimps and somebody hunted and ate a chimp that was infected with a version that mutated just enough to jump species. It really doesn't do a lot to chimps but fucks up humans really badly.

I'd say that's why corona has become so widespread. It really is not very dangerous to a healthy person, and it takes a while for symptoms to appear (if they do at all). Compare to something like ebola, which is far too deadly for its own good.

Bearing in mind that 'not very dangerous' and 'healthy' are important key qualifiers in this sentence. I fear anything that can kick your rear end more than the flu, which kills a fair number of people every year, ye gads.

But yeah, a lot of REALLY bad diseases tend to be self-limiting. Someone who is just oozing all of their blood out is both very visibly unwell and probably not long for this world, so transmission opportunities are reduced. The nightmare scenario for a world-ending disease is something like 'has extremely long incubation period, highly contagious during incubation, causes irrepairable long-term damage, immune response doesn't confer immunity for any real length of time, doesn't respond to any medications', and Covid-19 is certainly trying its damnedest to meet the metrics even if, I think, it ultimately won't.

Ah the best way to win plague inc.

There's also the scenario that the vector for delivery is not human contact but through water or animal/insects, so like dysentery and bubonic plague. Though both of those are pretty easily delt with today because we understand how those spread. Though i think in the world we live in, if a waterborn illness appeared in a major metropolitan area, it would probably kill millions because the people in charge of fixing it would not want to spend the money and then chuds would demand its against their freedom to not drink water with a bacteria in it that makes your insides come out of your butt.

Plus only poors drink unfiltered tap water so who is going to pay to fix it?

Not a totally hypothetical situation, btw. I lived in a small town of about 7,000 people that had a problem for years where during the spring run off the water supply would become contaminated with Beaver Fever. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giardiasis Upgrading the water treatment plant so it could prevent our pipes from filling with parasites would cost a million dollars. The town couldn't afford it and the province didn't care, so well-off folks drank bottled water and everybody else boiled it. We'd be under a boil water order for weeks at a time. And let me tell you, boiling 2 litres of water to make a jug of hot kool-aid was not a fun time. I think they finally did fixed it somehow, after more than 10 years of lovely springs.

Of course Giardiasis doesn't kill people. It makes you have a real bad few weeks, but it won't kill you.

This is a very long video that uses experimental music to stimulate the descent into dementia. The music represents memories, and how they become utterly, irreparably tangled and confused as the mind loses it's grasp on reality. Maybe it's just me, but I find that idea terrifying. If you want the full effect, start from the beginning. Stage 4, a little over 2 hours in, is where it really gets hosed up.

This is fantastic.

quote:

STAGE 1 : 00:00:00
Here we experience the first signs of memory loss. This stage is most like a beautiful daydream.
The glory of old age and recollection. The last of the great days.

STAGE 2 : 00:41:22
The second stage is the self realisation and awareness that something is wrong with a refusal to accept that. More effort is made to remember so memories can be more long form with a little more deterioration in quality. The overall personal mood is generally lower than the first stage and at a point before confusion starts setting in.

STAGE 3 : 01:23:17
Here we are presented with some of the last coherent memories before confusion fully rolls in and the grey mists form and fade away. Finest moments have been remembered, the musical flow in places is more confused and tangled. As we progress some singular memories become more disturbed, isolated, broken and distant. These are the last embers of awareness before we enter the post awareness stages.

STAGE 4 : 02:08:53
Post-Awareness Stage 4 is where serenity and the ability to recall singular memories gives way to confusions and horror. It's the beginning of an eventual process where all memories begin to become more fluid through entanglements, repetition and rupture.

STAGE 5 : 03:36:12
Post-Awareness Stage 5 confusions and horror. More extreme entanglements, repetition and rupture can give way to calmer moments. The unfamiliar may sound and feel familiar.
Time is often spent only in the moment leading to isolation.

STAGE 6 : 05:04:32
Post-Awareness Stage 6 is without description.
