We don't get as much exposure to British film and tv as they do to ours, but it's common enough that anyone making a big deal about how unintelligible a Brit is is probably exaggerating. Sub-dialects, even big ones like Scottish or Welsh, are a different story because they get even less exposure on an international scale and so their quirks aren't as well known/don't get dropped.
