Except for Pokemon, Valkyria Chronicles and 100% OJ.

I really just want a samurai game that isn't some anime and DMC filled thing, and this appears to be exactly that.

Its cool that they did that, but I can't see myself playing through the entire game in black and white. I'll probably turn it on for like a few hours or so.

The first screenshots they showed of that mode didn't really do the contrast correctly and it looked off, so I hope they've worked on that.

I just rewatched Seven Samurai last week so I'm very ready for this game~

Yup, visually it's absolutely stunning not just technically but the direction is great. Pretty much every gif or frame of this game has movement, reminds me of a Akira Kurosawa shot.

I just wish the combat is good, normally Suckerpunch games have good gameplay so I have my fingers crossed.

I mean if you can play through an Assassin's Creed or an Arkham or a Spider-Man or a Shadow of Mordor or The Witcher 3, I imagine you'll be able to stomach this. This appears to have all the same trappings of those 3PS action games, and usually one of those franchises hits a soft spot for someone. I really can't imagine this game will have WORSE combat than any of those franchises.

It's funny because to hear one of the lead developers talk about it, it seems like he's only watched that Every Frame a Painting video lol. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because the art direction is great but one of the things that has made me wary is that the entire dev team is bearded guys from Seattle. This game definitely has me interested but I'll wait a few weeks to get people's impressions first.

The other thing is they may have a better understanding of it but just are marketing to the lowest common denominator. Either way it’s a video game, honestly the visual thing is really all they can take from film so I’m fine with that

I hope this reviews well! The combat looks decent, but the open world-isms, like the loop of going in and out of towns, finding stuff to do, etc can really impact the experience. The approach of using natural elements to guide you instead of waypoint markers is a unique take that is definitely less obnoxious for a game like this.

Oh, say it ain't fuckin' so,
you stupid fuck!
I think the Japanese version might be bad and the whole Westerner's idea of Japan/samurais plus using Kurosawa to drum up the visuals is also kind of disappointing (though not unexpected) but I'll still play and probably enjoy it because singleplayer Sony exclusives that I haven't enjoyed are virtually non-existent.

What confuses me is people saying samurai games are dime a dozen... I'm thinking Sekiro, Nioh 1 and 2. What other games have come out recently to give this impression?

I think you can fairly easily ape Kurosawa's visual style for some cutscenes. I'm sure they've even recreated some shots 1:1 and I will go "heh" then press button to receive awesome.

I'm not super concerned about the game being realistic or accurate honestly. It's an open world "unlearn what you have learned" power fantasy with a cool skin and I'm on board for that.

I mean, every single Japanese centered story ever written by white people has 100% revolved around "honor" in the abstract and paints all of Japan in this incredibly simplistic tapestry of honor, ancestry, tradition and the associated tropes. If this game does literally ANYTHING besides that I will be impressed.

I don't think it will, but the chosen scenario is fairly interesting and not widely explored so it could at least be cool from that perspective.

I am still interested in seeing if these allegedly interesting sidequests pan out. I don't need anything new from this game, but I'd like a little effort.

More than anything I'm interested to see how the Mongols are depicted. More often than not, they're basically just orcs so hopefully they're a bit more fleshed out in this. But again, bearded white guys from Seattle. Has there been any confirmation on whether they hired historical consultants and, if so, who they are?

I haven't seen anything about who they've consulted but the trailers and stuff seem to depict the Mongols as humans with motivations.

Kings need not raise their voices to be heard

I don't log on when American Millennials (oops - Gen Zs) are up and about posted:

I'm American, so take that into consideration while reading this. I like to trade, mine, explore, do box missions, and maybe a little bounty hunting when the mood strikes. I've learned there is an appropriate time of the day (and server group) for each activity - and many activities are completely impossible about the time that the "Youth of America" are running amok. Spawn a ship, get pad-rammed. Fly near PO, get space rammed. Land at a trading post, get dirt-rammed. I even got rammed by a ship while on foot once. I'm green, not red - or I would have been shot in those instances.

I'd like to say we need a defense against ramming, but sometimes the good guy needs to ram the bad guy to stop him from sinister works. Maybe that ramming should be so costly to the rammer that its consequences need to be weighed before using it as a weapon. Maybe the rammer should die and respawn at a location so far from a spaceport that it gives everybody 1/2 hour of peace.

quote:

You're making assumptions about who and where these trolls are. There are more people in America, which means that even minorities seem very loud and vocal, and there seems to be more of them when there isn't really. I can log onto US servers, how would you know know what region I was in if I didn't tell you?

There has been an up-tick in the frequency of those who seem to have a grudge against the game in the last year or so. Previously they were mainly evident on outside social media sites like Reddit for example, however something changed. CIG instituted a policy that you could get a game package temporarily at zero cost. You buy the game, you get in and troll both the RSI forums and the game, then refund. Rinse and repeat.

It never ceases to amaze me the lengths that those who seem to have a grudge will go to just to spread constant FUD and negativity about a game development company and it's community. One has to wonder.. why don't they just go and find something they DO like? But then, perhaps they just like to be assholes all the time? you know, CIG don't require a mental health fitness report from relevant healthcare specialists to buy a game package and log in. It takes a certain set of personality traits to get frustrated and annoyed that everyone doesn't think and feel the way 'you' do. People often assume they hold the majority view, when they don't, especially when they only pay attention to those they agree with and dismiss those with whom they don't agree.

The only question I think worth asking is: If we all had their impatient negative attitude, would there be a game and community to complain about? Did we get here by never-ending FUD and negativity? No we didn't and even now we still don't. They are a minority, loud to be sure, but still a tiny minority. The vast majority who have supported this project are happy playing the game and being inspired to create content about it to share with others, very few even bother to visit the forums. It's the same names, the same arguments from the 'I'll make 10 threads per day in the forums' merchants. They become a parody of themselves after a while because they are so predictable. They don't realise perhaps that we old timers see these 'personalities' come and go with monotonous regularity. They think they are bringing something new, we know they aren't.

If you land on a toxic server, log out and back in - you can choose to change regions. If you can't find a group you are happy with stay away from other players as much as you can in this massive play space and close the chat window, or join a group you are happy with and team up.

This last year (indeed the last several years) have lead to polarisation of countries, communities, ideologies and those with agendas and axes to grind, it's no wonder that some of it spills into a game frequented by multiple thousands of human beings from around the World per day. It's just like real life, you avoid those places and people that cause you distress and annoyance - it is not a persons birthright never to be offended or annoyed by life and the people in it. I've travelled the World and there are places that I love to go, cultures I find charming and fascinating - and there are places in the World that I would never go to even if someone gave me a free ticket to get there and all expenses paid. Preferences are not prejudices, though people seem to confuse them as such these days in my view. I blame the 'popularity vote' culture.. there seems an imperative to always state preferences and thus show allegiances.

Learn the strategies to avoid those you find difficult to cope with now, such tactics will come in useful later. We always knew that the game would eventually attract large numbers, it needed to.

There are those who insist they are adding to the development by asking versions of 'When, When, When. It's a question that has been asked constantly since day one, but perhaps they don't realise that? The only reasonable answer is, we know the developers are working as hard as they can and as every adult knows 'When' - will be when it is good and ready. We went the crowdfunding route to avoid investors demanding 'When' and 'Get it out by Christmas to suit me and my profits!' because we knew that the best only comes with time and resources. The time and resources that other traditional game developers would never agree to sending. The best is worth waiting for and we have better than most other games can offer already with what we have, with the absolute expectation that it will only get better and better with time. Which other 'finished game' can you say that about? All updates and additions are free from the day you make your base pledge - Chris started the process, but it was the community who drove the project beyond his initial vision, and we still do. Some don't like the idea that their original view of what the project should be - changed. They like suggesting polls, but they don't like that the majority prefer what we have now instead of what was originally planned, if they didn't why isn't this forum swamped with millions of people demanding what they are demanding? Having an opinion about the project and how it is developing is fine, but as Chris says - It's not a democracy.

Are some impatient - well yes.
Will they always be? Well yes, they are only human after all.
What they want is what we all want, only some of us have a more realistic view of what it takes to get it.

Those 'young' players might think 8 - 10 years is an eternity to wait because they don't usually know that they are waiting since most development goes on in secret.. but we old folks view time differently. Next year I will be 60 years old. I'm lucky I have less of the infirmities that come with age than some suffer, but even so 8 - 10 years means a lot of change potentially. Would I still have supported the project knowing how long it would take - knowing how huge it was going to be? Hell yes! The whole point was to try doing something that no other game developer would ever dream of trying - comparing this project to other game studio efforts only re-affirms that belief, we HAD TO do it differently. Am I happy when younger newer players discover this amazing experience, even though some of them need to do a little growing up? Hell yes! that was the whole point, it was never intended to be a little niche project!

I was a bit of a tear-away when I was kid - You learn.

this game really got lost in the sea of games that Sony was firing off previews for in the last few years, i.e. Spider-Man, Resident Evil 2, Last of Us 2, Horizon, etc. Add in the PS5 reveal later in the year and the covid catastrophe and man it's unfortunate, because I've thought it has looked cooled from the early vids showing it in motion. I keep hoping it's a stylistic BOTW with great combat that has a long experience and very big diverse world to explore. It'll be really cool if the reviews drop tomorrow and they're mostly really good.
