my corner dive bar just announced they're gone because the property manager wouldn't negotiate on rent  one thing I'm curious about is what these landlords think is going to happen when there's hundreds of vacant units on the market (or millions in the case of housing) I know the answer is "who cares? we only own the building as an appreciating asset" but still it's loving stupid to get no money instead of some money

I think a while back my city proposed like 10% of property taxes or 1% of value or something like that which meant owning a whole vacant 3 unit brownstone would cost you like 2000 a year and oh god people were furious and they backed down.

yeah, that's before the roni. I've never been in there but I took a look through the window the other day and the place is maybe nine feet wide by 40 feet deep including the prep area. absolutely baffling menu too. twelve dollar antioxidant smoothies and the like prominently featured with regular ol coffee in small print near the bottom of the drinks, right before the fifteen dollar egg salad sandwich with microgreens. if they weren't trying to sell, I'd assume they were a front

i think dives are doing ok because they tend to have food that does well in takeout (burgs and wings and poo poo) and also the complete disintegration of liquor laws (though bars in pa have always been takeout friendly about beer) one around here just reclassified a few of their regulars as employees and them and the normal employees just watch movies while sitting 6 feet apart from each other

the really lovely property management company that runs my place is hilarious. on at least two occasions ive seen them let a property get trashed by college bros, they evict them, the property sits for 11 months, the books come in, they panic and roll up and throw out all the trash and raise the rent by 20% the big place out front is nice and does have a fireplace but it doesn't even have a/c, just a swamp cooler, and they took it from 1600 to 2095 rent in one year and im like uhhhh you know people get stabbed on our street and i found a set of brass knuckles just at the end of my driveway hanging out
