Welcome survivors! In this here thread I will be lets playing Green Hell. Do you like watching Bear Grylls drink piss? Or Les Shroud complain about carrying his camera? Or partners yell at mosquitoes on Naked and Afraid?
If yes, then this game may be the entertainment your heart desires. Come join me on this grand adventure!

What the hell is Green Hell?

Green Hell is a survival game similar to the -Stranded- series or perhaps -The Forest-.

"Survival" games have a pretty bad reputation in the steam community because most upstart game developers tend to keep their survival games in permanent Early-Access limbo, leaving them to be buggy, forgotten messes.

Green Hell managed to break from this stereotype and actually create a decent enough romp through a horrible environment with an engaging story-mode. A story-mode that I will be playing through! Crikey!

Set in the Amazon rainforest the protagonist must brave this harsh environment in order to save his wife.

The game was published by Creepy Jar studios and was released on steam on Sept 5th, 2019.

What kind of LP is this?

This will be a video LP.

May I spoil the story for everyone?

Please don't

Okay well what does the game even look like?

Come see the beautiful Flora

And the friendly(ish) Fauna

This game has crafting! Gather materials to build a camp and other such things in order to survive!

The characters:

Jake Higgins

Anthropologist and award winning book author. Our protagonist of the story. Has a dark past. Also looks and sounds like Nathan Drake.

Mia HIggins

Jake's wife. Professional interpreter. Is Spanish. We must save her!

I am terribly sorry, but I'm moving my video off of my friend's team channel since they haven't bothered uploading anything in months and seemed to have lost interest in it.

Will update the link to my personal channel once it is finished uploading.

Once again terribly sorry.

Interested in the story, and I really like the mechanics and interface they have for immersion, but that dialogue is driving me nuts with how unnatural it is sometimes, especially with how much of the wrong sort of exposition they have.

The devs are in Warsaw, so I'm guessing that may partially be an artifact of not being native English speakers. And maybe not having the resources to get outside professionals to do the translation? Dunno. Definitely agreed it's awkward, though.

Stone tools in survival crafting games always get to me. They're always made out of 'stone', just like any rock you see lying around that's all good.

There are only a few types of stone suitable for flaking, and back in their heyday they were valuable resources mined in open-pit mines and traded considerable distances. A given core could have a long life starting as an axehead and getting smaller and smaller every time its reflaked into a new blade until it ends up as a tiny blade for scraping hides.

Rats, there goes my latest get-rich-quick scheme of "authentic" stone hatchets made from gravel in my back yard. Maybe I'll try iron next, I hear you can smelt ore by tossing it on a fire for a couple minutes.

The Lone Badger
Sep 24, 2007

Iron is actually closer, you can make bloomery iron using a surprisingly simple furnace made out of clay, leather and charcoal if you know how.

Now turning the iron bloom into a useful tool, that's going to take you a while.

Hey friend sorry for just lurking this instead of like giving you encouragement as you threw this out there. Just wanted to pop in and say that I'm digging your LP, both from a presentation perspective and for the game you chose. It feels like Subnautica but in a jungle. I like when these kinds of games have a little more to them than just building a base and slowly obsolescing all the survival mechanics by going up a tech tree!

malkav11

Definitely interested to see what the heck is going on. My current theory:
The title is literal.

And don't worry, you're doing fine. Honestly my only real criticism would be that you're dwelling a little too much on whether or not you're LPing right. If there's issues you'll get feedback, trust me. :)

Dreadwroth2

/\/\I think the title is a cheeky reference to how the English colonizers used to describe the jungle.
I didn't know this was your first LP, you're doing a good job showcasing Green Hell so don't worry about it too much. You kind of remind me of CirclMaster a bit actually, except he don't got a snazzy intro.
You can always set up a casual Twitch streaming thing, like I occasionally stream Warframe or Elite or whatever. It's incredibly low effort.
Have you checked out the LP Beach Discord?

As for the game. In my opinion the bad ending was the better ending.
It really puts the Hell in Green Hell.

I admit, when I played through the game the first time I thought Mia would end up
being an antagonist of sorts, siding with poachers or some kind of other bad folks like the gold miners.

I wonder if anyone else thought the same?
