I’m pretty early but combat is finally clicking with me. I inadvertently started a side quest and ended up at a Mongol camp where I called them out, chained two kills, parried and killed three more guys without taking damage, then got two headshots in a row on the archers at the back of the camp. It felt awesome.

I’m coming to grips with quickly adjusting the camera while fighting. I wonder if the back button attachment would make this smoother.

Tip, you can double dip on Leaders by both observing them for a stance point and then killing them for another point.

Also since it took me forever to realize what they meant by observing: you have to sneak and get close to the camp leader at which point you’ll get a hold R2 prompt to observe.

I failed to try this for a while because it went against my “walk through the front door yelling at them to come face me” style

I only did it once for the extra point and I’ve already unlocked all 4 stances in act 1, you’ll bump into plenty of leaders if you go around doing things as they pop up.

There doesn’t seem to be any perk after unlocking the last stance from killing leaders so there’s no need to min/max it and give up that sweet sweet standoff action unless you’re rushing to unlock the last stance.

I’ve already unlocked wind (with moon to go) so I’m not worried about missing out points. What’s everyone been dumping technique points on? I maxed out the deflection tree, standoff, and Kunai so far since they’re like most of what I use. None of the stances trees really call out to me but I’m leaning towards finishing water stance since it’s what I mostly use (i loving hate shield dudes)

Maxed out Kunai owns

Hail to the King, baby.

The sticky bombs are incredibly powerful when you max them out. They’re my favorite tactic for dealing with groups, or to just wreck a leader when I’m feeling spiteful.

It's helpful to max out stone stance first since that's mostly the one you'll be using for duels, which don't have access to either ghost tools or standoffs (and are therefore harder).

I’ve been pumping the Evolving Tactics section more than anything else, with a few points in the stances and the Evasion tree.

I’m too lovely at timings to parry consistently in what feels like an ultra-tight parry window so I can completely ignore the Deflection tree, which frees up a lot of points for nonsense.

Kinda neither honestly, it's really a diablo/poe/something style loot grinder with shittons of broken bullshit that happens to look like it's some sort of Dark Souls clone.

The way the fragmented mission structure lets you grind/replay little bite sized missions and how stupidly powerful all sorts of builds are feels entirely different than Sekiro (or this game).

That said if you still want japanese flavor after getting through this, either Nioh 2 or Sekiro will certainly do the trick for fantastical elements.

Anime is Bad.
Except for Pokemon, Valkyria Chronicles and 100% OJ.

This game absolutely doesn't need oni and magical monsters and all that. If you want magical samurai then go play literally any other game about samurai, I like this one specifically because its not full of all that crazy super powered junk.

Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
I've put about 20 or so hours in so far, and the game is amazing. Here are some of my screenshots:

Escort targets and companions match your speed. You can also just push forward on the left stick and you'll move with them if you need to follow them. This is amazing.

Combat is tricky at first, but once you start playing deliberately instead of mashing buttons, the combat is so much smoother. It's not souls-like difficult, but it's def. more complex than Assassin's Creed.

There's a charm you can find at one of the shrines that makes it easier to parry, perfect parry and perfect dodge. I sucked at parrying before I equipped it and now I can regularly get perfect parries.

Ok I have to put this down and sleep I’ve been playing this poo poo all day. I got about... 70% of the first island explored? Done a fuckload of side quest, liberated half of it, found some cool hats. I have I think one more side tale and then I’ll have no choice but to do the remaining chapter 1 stories. Unless I find even more side quest :getin:

The game is an absolute joy. I love the simplicity of the gear / charm system meaning you can just rely on skill to get through most of it then use skills and ghost gear to style on mongols. The story (which I’ve ignored) hasn’t had a chance to wow or bore me but the side stories so far have been ok. Nothing super thrilling but there’s been some real fun moments throughout. Combat is just so fun and deadly (both ways) and I’ve yet to run into a situation where I go “oh gently caress that’s a drat damage sponge”. Even the duels I’ve run into have been quick and deadly.

Looking forward to burning another day on this tomorrow.

Ok, having played some more I feel like it's what the last two AC games wish they were. It's those games but with a longer development cycle so instead of everything being half assed it's very polished and nice. The game doesn't bring many new things to the table but it's the best version of a pretty popular game style.

In short, it looks like AC but doesn't feel like it because it doesn't suck.

i am mixed. i like the souls lite combat of origins and odyssey. the combat of this is fun and it feels like the final extension of AC would have ended up if it had followed the direction unity was going. i am not super far yet but i am kinda mixed on the stealth so far. its fine but its kinda basic and the "you got spotted so you fail" sucks rear end even though its pretty forgiving, it think the camera doesnt help the combat either but its still good so far.

I refuse to wear anything but the ronin outfit in blue and white, it's all I've found that boosts damage. It also looks awesome with the yellow straw hat that covers your face. Hopefully there are some flowing swordmaster robes coming soon. You can go to the salesman in town and he has dyes that cost flowers. There are also special dye sellers, I've only found one.

The different flute songs you can play change the weather.

The best outfits hide your arrows. So that's the traveler's garb and kensei level 2 on and onward. Maybe some others!

Max out the sword tree as you'll be doing a lot of duels versus dudes with swords!

Try bowing at shrines and to people and whenever you see signs that have a picture of a dude bowing!

Get the chain assassination talent and throw down a smokebomb then kill 3 dudes at once!

Why doesn't Jin already have the island unlocked/unfogged when he is literally the lord of it!

Sometimes when you are inside and press the wind button, Jin will pick up a leaf and let it go to check the wind direction.

I wish the mythic quests and the EVEN MORE VAGUE quest directions and stuff were applied to all the quests in this game. I love the idea of looking at an unlabeled map and exploring some areas.

The one thing I don't like about the visuals are the giant white "wind" streak effects. I think the particles blowing around are more than enough to guide me, the streaks just clutter the scenery and ruin the effect.

This and a more pulled away Ninja Gaiden style camera would be the best changes they could make, I don't get the conplaints about the story or the controls or Japanese lip movement. Kurosawa mode looks cool but like I expected is just a b/w mode with a filter and I wish they had done a little more with it. A color visual mode with the film filter and contrast like a 70s samurai flick would be really cool
