Alone season 1 ending spoilers: I really was hoping Sam would win that season. He was just this super young doofy dork that figured he could starve to death in the woods longer than anyone else and it almost worked. I also hated the guy that won. Seemed like a low key piece of poo poo.

But I couldn't be happier with the season two winner. Spoilers: Just an old dude sitting in the woods eating crab. That fuckin' rules.

I liked both Sam and Alan but especially Alan, he was so charming! I was rooting for him almost from the beginning. Why didn't you like him?

Also FYI Sam is also on a subsequent season where they brought back some runners-up, so don't google him if you don't want spoilers for that season/

Vikings. I'm up to Season 3 Episode 8, "To the Gates" where the vikings tried to storm Paris and got murdered the gently caress up.

It's been a mixed bag so far. I really like parts of it, and I think sometimes they do an amazing job of being true to history (or at least a slightly exaggerated version of it), and other times it seems they do the dumbest of Hollywood moves like turning Floki into some kind of religious bigot villain who hates Christians, when the Norse didn't historically really give a poo poo about other faiths unlike some other religions we could mention.

I dunno. I guess I'll watch the rest of it, but it sure feels like it's been going downhill over this season.

It's never 100% accurate to history and it's not like we know tons about what went down anyway. We got a few accountings from monks and poo poo

Anyway, my point is that the show just gets worse from there on, especially when Ragnar dies and the show becomes about his awful sons

I liked Alan too. But I did laugh at his kids reaction when he came home. They were pretty nonchalant about it.

Also I've now gotten through 8 seasons of Life Below Zero and think I'm stopping. Except for a brief season where 1 new person appeared and then disappeared, there have been no changes in the people/families the show has followed. I've seen these people do all the same things now many times over, it's too bad they couldn't find different people to film.

I decided to watch Hunters on Amazon. The heavy ad campaign behind it was similar to The Boys--which I recently decided to give a shot and mostly enjoyed--so I figured "why not?"

Boy, is this show uneven. The tone is very inconsistent: for the most part it is very dark and bleak (appropriate, based on the subject matter) with 4th-wall breaking bits that are meant to be humorous and informational ("Yes this actually happened!"), but really do not fit into the rest of the show. So many of the plot beats are contrived and ultimately pointless. One major criticism leveled at the series that I agree with: you don't need to make up horror stories about how Jewish people were treated in those loving camps: real life was terrible enough. In one instance, one of the Nazi guards forces a top chess player to play chess against him using actual humans in a giant, outdoor board. Nazis do not need to be written as comic-book villain type figures, and the series does not hesitate to borrow from real world examples of hosed up poo poo they did. So why fabricate silly crap like that?

There was enough to keep me entertained until the finale, but that was mostly due to performances from Al Pacino and the rest of the cast (especially Logan Lerman and Jerrika Hinton). The finale was just....I don't need to see a season 2.

Hunters had a huge tone problem, completely agreed. You can't just go from slapstick and comic stuff directly to a played straight Holocaust story. Without some kind of decent transition it just comes off like you think the Holocaust is a fairy tale.

Hunters flat out sucks, it's terrible. Tonal problems, made up tortures, Nazi cartoon characters. It would have been 100x better if they stuck with clandestine Jewish group hunting Nazis but it's not, it's a live action cartoon with 21st century SJW's serving justice in the 1970's against twisty mustache villains with silly world domination plots ... no wait, stop, I'm making it sound waaaaaay better than it really is.

It felt like they set out to make a Dr Strangelove biting satire, but once it got green lit and they had to write it they realized that they couldn’t compete with the craziness of real life 2020 and there was a good chance one of their concepts would be really unfunny by the time the show aired so they played it super safe.

I don't know what character John Carell is playing and I'm not sure he does either. The accent is inconsistent and distracting. John Malkovich is perfect but I would expect that. You know when you meet new people and they seem fun but have all these little inside jokes they won't explain and they think are really funny but aren't funny without context, that's what I feel like when I watch Space Force.

Yeah, the tone is extremely confused. At first it seems like it wants to be a mixture of torture and social justice porn—none of the villains are coherent characters but I could at least understand what that show would be going for—then it starts veering in and out of bad meta comedy. It's reminiscent of the mismatch in Mrs. Maisel between the A plots getting played (relatively) seriously and the B/C plots being completely absurd.

It makes me wonder if Amazon is making conflicting demands of showrunners in some kind of bid to get broader appeal out of its slim lineup of original content, particularly because (other than the human chess nonsense) the pilot is more coherent than the rest of the show.

I binged both seasons of Utopia just last week again (second time watching) and it absolutely held up against my fond memories.

Terrific show, brilliant cast, and some absolutely iconic moments.

Dunno how Amazon could possibly improve upon it. In fact, there are many things I don't believe they can even include in the new series, given the world of today.

re Alone: How do you hate Alan Kay? That Sam dude has a YouTube channel, last I saw he had bought old house and was fixing it up.

I’m friends with several people that have been on Alone, as well as a few that have been on Naked and Afraid. Let me say, first off, that season one was difficult to cast, because it was new and really most of the big names in that world thought it would be a good idea and they had trouble finding enough people experienced enough to make it something great. Once the series took off, however, applications started flooding in. They also had trouble finding people with a name for themselves in the genre that hadn’t done Naked and Afraid (They won’t cast anyone on Alone who has done Naked and Afraid) or weren’t already involved in other projects.

And, honestly, I think Alan is a much nicer guy than the guy who won season two. As for Sam, as the due date of his wife approached, I think it was too much for him, but he wins season five ! Sam is genuinely a super sweet guy. He’s been in works on a show with Tim Gunn. You read that right. Not sure the status of this, since the pandemic is throwing a wrench in things.

There is the one season where two people are teamed up and they’re either married or it’s a sibling or parent and child. The people that win are hilarious irl and have had some pretty neat things happen with their win.

If anyone has questions, I might be able to answer or ask one of the cast members I know. It’s a great show!

You guys got me to check out Alone too! I'm not usually into survivalist kind of stuff but this is really good. I think the thing I like the best is that there's no narrator or interpersonal bullshit (other than that one season where they had a teammate. But even then they were way more supportive than combative the majority of the time. I'm about halfway through season 6 now and it's really surprising how different, diverse, and seemingly abundant the food sources seem to be. Will be interesting to see if they last longer than the other seasons.

Bah, kinda bummed I read that Sam spoiler. I've got a question, I know they're allowed 10 items, but none of them list "tarps" as one of their things but they all seem to have them. I'm assuming they're given a large tarp as part of their kit they don't have to choose from. Seems weird that's one, but a sleeping bag isn't included since everyone will always take one of those. Is there a bunch of stuff they just "get" to use and the 10 items are just the extra bits like slingshots and bows and axes and stuff?

No. They’re not in any danger of losing people, although I think they should lighten the restrictions on those that have been on N&A.. There’s a huge community of us out there and it’s only started growing since the popularity of this, N&A, and now with the pandemic more people than ever are getting into this. I just love that people are getting back to nature. And, for those wondering, the community covers all walks of life.
