Does anyone else listen to Rina Sawayama? I am digging this album. Spotify started playing it after the gecs remix album finished playing.

Serendipity that the new The Beths and the gecs remix album both came out today and yes I know most of those remixes were already out.

How has Muzz not been mentioned in this thread yet?

In short - Paul Banks of Interpol-fame has been working with his high school friend (who was in the group Bonny Light Horseman) since 2015 on music with one of The Walkmen/Fleet Foxes. A lot of comparisons to early The National especially with the baritone-bass voices that Dessner and Banks share.

Anyone hear know where to find lyrics for Zamrock/ Afrobeat songs? I can't seem to find lyrics for stuff like WITCH or the Funkees anywhere, even their songs in English, and I speak neither Igbo nor the languages WITCH sings in.

The more I listen to it, the more I think that the new Haim album sounds more like Vampire Weekend than Haim. That probably of course has a lot to do with the fact that former Vampire Weekend member Rostam produced the album. Anyone else get that feeling?

It's a piece of JUNK!
I know it's superficial and probably an insult to the other sisters, but the presence of Danielle Haim on like half the songs on the last VW album do make them feel of a piece with each other, yeah.

Honestly I've never understood the love for Haim. They're Wilson Phillips without the edge, just absolutely weapons-grade boredom.

On another note, I'm probably the last person in this thread to get obsessed with Phoebe Bridgers but holy hell that new album is so drat good.

Also I just ran across this the other day and I'm enchanted:

Who will win the greatest battle of them all?

I've only seen HAIM at festivals and I like them, though this release feels like they got overshadowed by a lot of other really good music coming out at the same time

On that note, it's a drat shame nobody is talking about Jessie Ware and Lianne La Havas both releasing excellent new albums

I do like Phoebe, but all that sad girl rock (Lucy Dacus, Soccer Mommy, Julien Baker etc) is starting to sound same samey to me to where I'm getting turned off on it

I actually came here just now to discuss just this. Where are all the fun new rock bands these days? I know that rock as a genre isn't really being highlighted by the mainstream anymore these days, and the ones that are heralded by places like pitchfork and NPR are just kind of, sad sounding, despite how good they are.

I've loved a lot of new stuff that has come out this year (mainly the new Perfume Genius), but is there anybody new doing something like what Broken Social Scene was doing last decade? Just music that is unapologetically rock, that still makes you want to dance. I've been criticized by other friends for my music tastes being stuck in 2007.

That's also why I really like: Black Midi, The Beths, Charly Bliss, Fontaines DC, White Reaper, and CHAI more than most of the sad girl sound that is really popular lately

Yeah I'll admit that lately, any time I see a review of an album where they're all like "what separates this from their debut album is that they're chronicling their very real struggles with depression" I'm not really intrigued anymore. I mean I don't begrudge anyone for doing it, I don't want to overreact like people did in the late '90s / early '00s and be like "lol you're rich, get over it". But through no fault of their own, it's well-worn territory by now.

This is why Fiona Apple's album was such a nice surprise. The reviews made it sound so unpleasant, but it's actually really fun even though it's also about serious stuff. (Obviously not really "rock" though, to bring it back to the original point.)

WRT the above that's honestly why I put off paying attention to the new Phoebe Bridgers album for so long. At first pass it does sound to me like fairly samey "sad girl rock" as air- put it, and it was only when I started to pay closer attention to the lyrics that I really started liking it. She just has a very clever way with words and a knack for saying things in a sort of sideways fashion that strikes me as being about equal parts funny and sad, and that kinda does it for me.
