I haven't seen it in ages, but I remember liking EBE because of its race-against-time conceit, and of course Mulder is just a hair too late to see an actual alien. And that tantalizing glimpse at a UFO's silhouette behind some kind of sheeting. Though it's been so long I may be mixing up episodes here, that silhouette glimpse might be from the stoner Seth Green episode. There's also another silhouette tease somewhere later on in the series, maybe season 3 or so, where Mulder and Scully are in some kind of abandoned factory building and you see little greys' silhouettes against presumably the bright light of their space craft outside. But never an actual good look. Mark Snow's music for scenes like that, the tittling dingling, is so memorable.

But as with EBE, the episode Drive having the clock ticking gimmick really gives it a lot of urgency for what is ultimately a fairly visually uninteresting episode. Cranston of course is good. There are a bunch of mediocre X-Files episodes that sort of meander and flop around as Mulder desperately tries to convince Scully of the next development in his theory.

I appreciated the Scully/Doggett dynamic as swapping roles so that Scully was now the believer and Dogget the skeptic (in the same way we'd gotten the role reversal any time the episode mystery was religion-themed), but it was clear the show was running out of steam by that point.

I remember the first movie mostly for the desert and mountains surrounding Dallas.

I knew the show was dead when in the post-movie season, smoking man says without irony that he's going to pin a series of deaths on an insane native american going on a rampage with a hatchet because America hates "the red man." I don't know if that was some kind of attempt at name-checking a contemporary first-nations rights issue in the US or Canada at the time or something, but it was so stupid that I just checked out at that point. The show never looked right outside of Vancouver anyway.

One of the all-time great X-Files episodes for sure. I remember being completely freaked out by it as a kid. For some reason there was a young reader semi-novelization of that episode and I would just keep re-reading that, since it was before you could really easily rewatch episodes.

The erlenmeyer flask was a pretty decent episode especially for a mytharc. The second season premier, little green men was kind of a dud I felt, although Skinner telling CSM to gently caress off was fun. Watching the Host now, a thread favorite I think?

This is an excellent question because I love them on the show. Frohicke's a little overdue for a cancellation so I'd say kudos on the accuracy, XF writers!

In all seriousness for a nerd pervert who's basically a peeping tom writ large he's probably a little too decent.

The mytharc episodes are good to great until the season 4 finale where it starts to wobble. Until then, they're solid thrillers with great character drama for the leads.

The season 6 2-parter that attempts to tie it all together is pretty clumsy, often dumb but also thrilling if you were into it back in the day. It's the biggest lesson/warning
in mythology building/payoff for all of genre tv.

Fun fact: The script for this episode was literally sitting in a drawer for 10 years and something that Morgan originally wrote for the Kolchak reboot. It never got filmed because the reboot was cancelled very early. It's like 95% the same as the Kolchak script.

I never watched the 2nd reboot season because I intensely disliked all but this episode in the first season. And they couldn't get Vince Gilligan to write one loving new episode? Come on.

I remember it being very hit or miss but the pilot episode at least is worth watching for predicting 9/11 a few months ahead of time.

Also as mentioned Lose Art of Forehead Sweat is absolutely worth watching. As is the robot sushi restaurant one.

The X-Files is good seasons 1-6. I'd probably avoid watching after that as the mythology gets pretty dumb but if you're that hard into it then there's still some decent standalone episodes past that.

I really love seasons 1-6 though (plus the first movie).

Just get a list of the best episodes from S7 onward, as they're still worth watching. Isn't Hollywood AD in S7? Or is that S6? The mytharc gets really, really bad once it starts featuring a baldwin brother.

There are quite a few really good Dogget episodes, too, need to look up a list of those for my eventual rewatch.

Season 7 not only has Hollywood AD, but also Hungry, X-Cops, and En Ami, which are all favorites of mine. It also has First Person Shooter which is terrible but at least in a morbidly curious way given who wrote it, and Millennium which is at least worth a watch if you liked Millennium the show.

Seasons 8 and 9 I honestly think the good episodes can be counted on one hand. Though the episodes with Aaron Paul and Burt Reynolds stand out.

Doggett and Reyes were not bad characters, it's just that the show was out of breath at that point.
If the mytharc had been properly closed and if they had been able to transition the show into more of a team investigation

I'm not sure the show was out of breath, but it just wouldn't let go of Mulder/Scully (probably because the show was so hugely successful with them). I remember wishing that we could just get on with interesting X-Files with these new characters - Doggett was great, Reyes didn't really click with me, but maybe that was because Scully took up a lot of the partner character screentime.

It helped a lot that right from his first appearance they had an idea of where they wanted his character to go, he was written as a fully developed, three dimensional character when they easily could've just made him a simple foil to Scully. Then throw in that it's Robert Patrick playing him and he comes across as 100% genuine at all times, and it really did work very well.
