This got lost in the Ooblets talk, but so far I'm really enjoying Beyond a Steel Sky. It feels like its got the production values of a Telltale, without the important choice stuff.

Just a really good old school adventure, the hacking stuff seems interesting so far, but I'm hoping they do something a bit more complicated with it as the game goes on.

Hooray Indie Games!

College Slice
I just 100% Ghost of Tsushima last night. It was the perfect open world game for me. Lots of great content without an overwhelming huge map like Witcher 3 (which I never finished) or AC: Odyssey (finished, but never fully explored). The story was great. The ending of the game was gut wrenching and perfect. The side quests for the other minor characters were great. The combat never got boring. The QoL stuff like the whole map getting revealed when you liberate all the camps in an area was perfect for someone like me who likes to explore a little too much. If the game had a map like Skyrim or Witcher 3 or Assassin's Creed, I'd probably be overwhelmed by side content and exploration and put it down. This game might feel short for people expecting huge amounts of content for an open world game though especially for the price point. I'm used to playing indie games, so dropping 60 on a AAA game is scary, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. I mean I enjoyed it enough to write up a post so...

Machinarium is a beautiful, intellectually challenging point-and-click adventure. It often made me laugh. There were very, very few puzzles I had to look up. The visual style is distinctly Czech; it reminds me of some Czech animation I've seen. I am delighted to find a new game by these people.

Ooblets update: I'm 27 hours in, and I'm done with the current content. It's a campaign-based game, and it quickly (for me, anyway) gets boring just growing crops and getting paid for them. I'm still happy I bought early access, especially given the discount + an old Epic Launcher coupon, and I'll check back in a month or so to see what's changed.

Yup. They're up with Klei on my "buy anything they make" list.

More Creaks thoughts now I've actually played it. It's all 2-d: you're a flat object against a flat surface. You can move (or jump) up, down, left and right, and interact with a few designated objects (which say [Space] if you pass by them.) Art is gorgeous, as usual. I'm still getting the hang of the puzzles, which require you to get past obstacles. The earliest puzzles require you to get past a mechanical dog; if you fail, it will bite you and set you back to the beginning of that puzzle. There's a bit of timing involved: you need to lure the dog in various ways, then run up a ladder before it bites you.

I played a couple hours last night with PC Game Pass. It's kind of like a light MetroidVania - you unlock new abilities that grant access to new areas. However there's no map and as such the level design so far has been very very streamlined, which I liked. There were only one or two spots where I didn't immediately know what I was supposed to do next because the game usually puts you right by the next unlocked path. One of the biggest reasons I usually end up losing interest in the regular genre is that I get lost or stuck and can't be arsed to figure out where to go to use my new ability. The unique theme also makes it much more interesting to me. For combat encounters the level design usually offers side or vent-like paths so you can really feel like a creeping monster as you stalk people and get the jump on them - and it's actually pretty necessary as the enemies get more dangerous. So yeah I enjoyed it and plan to keep playing.

Is it a goblins-like adventure game where each map is a puzzle? Or is there travelling around, talking to characters, backtracking and such?

It's actually a pure puzzle game. There's no interaction with characters; instead, you go from room to room trying to get past that room's obstacle. Once you get past an obstacle, you move to the next with no backtracking. It isn't like Machinarium or Botanicula at all; it's good in its own way, but go in with those expectations. I find that I can only play it half an hour or so at a time before I'm stumped by a particular puzzle and have to back out for awhile. There's no way to say "okay, I'll punt that and go back to it later."

If you want a more traditional point-and-click, Amanita released a charming small game (an hour and a half, maybe?) called "Pilgrims" last fall, which I highly recommend. Interesting mechanics, great art, and a cheeky sense of humor. One of your tasks is to help a devil snatch a priest who sold the devil his soul.

I really wish it had a map or more intuitive level design. At least for me I’ve spent a decent amount of time lost now that I’ve gotten deeper into it. Overall though it is still pretty fun and I’d probably recommend it. They really pulled off the animations and the feel of the gameplay is really unique/evocative of the theme.

Hey goons, our game Necronator: Dead Wrong launches out of Early Access this week, and it's on sale for the first time right now (20% off). There's a free exclusive cosmetic DLC that only folks who bought the game in Early Access will get. We've added a fuckload of content and polish since it launched in Early Access back in Feb and we've got more content coming post-launch.

Necronator is a run-based deck-builder mashed with a mini-RTS game: the card & relic synergy gameplay you get in Slay the Spire or Monster Train in a whole different context.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ENPYp9h8SM

Please check it out and leave a review if you dig it! Modern Wolf is publishing more cool poo poo this year like Ostranauts (the follow-up to NEO Scavenger; think Rimworld meets The Expanse) and Kosmokrats, a Soviet zero-gravity comedy puzzle game.

I continually get lost and then stop playing, and then go back and do it again. A map would be very helpful for my dumb rear end. Or some kind of indicator as to where i should be going.

We completely reworked the reinforcement system based on player feedback. Now if it ticks down, the enemy gets one small reinforcement wave and the clock resets. After two minutes, the enemy gets a bigger reinforcement wave, and so on.

It’s no longer an instant win button for the AI and now makes longer fights more interesting we think. Let me know what you think if you give it a go!
