I feel like all the boring stuff is necessary buildup to the chase scene and "I'm okay!" Like, we spend a lot of time with this first group of girls, you think they're setting up some kind of stalk-and-kill slasher variant, and then they're all killed very quickly. Very Psycho. SO now we get this second group, and we start spending a lot of time with them, and we know something's bad gonna happen, and there's that much more suspense because we know this film doesn't care about the normal pacing. When Zoë's on the hood it's both suspenseful on its own as an action sequence, and suspenseful because we know this film will kill characters we have grown to care about. And then she pops up. And everything changes. And I think you need the buildup to have that much of a payoff. Plus this actually lets them do something neat- all the dialogue in the second half includes a bit where they're telling a story of Zoë falling into a ditch and just being fine, and if they'd had that happen on-screen, whether it's a flashback or whatever, it'd be obvious foreshadowing. If it had been a monologue sort of on its own that would also be kind of a giveaway. But since it's just a part of the patter, we don't see that it's significant, until the thing happens. Basically Death Proof is QT doing some tricky stuff to manipulate the audience and I like that. Also, just, y'know, Zoë Bell.

Death Proof had no need for that extended cut. And it definitely had no need for the extended cut to be the only standalone version you can buy.

One thing I never understood about that movie were the scenes with the radio dj girl texting w her lovely boyfriend/date multiple times. It became the focus of the scene whenever it happened and I thought it was going to pay off with him being the killer or a victim, but unless I missed something, it didn't turn into anything and had no reason to be there.

I must be so loving boring because I'd watch hours and hours of stuff like that Sleepaway Camp video. I want to see someone go through and do spot cleanup and remove hairs and fix discoloration in detail. Then again my favorite YouTube show is a conservator painstakingly restoring oil paintings so I guess I'm boring either way. Anyway, hopping on that thread, great idea!

I think the Japanese King Kong vs. Godzilla is actually a pretty good film, especially the Japanese version. The American version is pretty bad since it renders the story nonsensical, and the news broadcast motif just doesn't work.

I have to agree about King Kong vs. Godzilla. I'd heard it was bad but I watched it this weekend and loved it. I mean yea it's goofy as hell in spots but not in a way that I thought was out of line for a kaiju film.
