It's really interesting how impotent Snout is. Dominic Deegan was always the beneficiary of undeserved plot coupons and hand-outs, but while the universe bent over backwards for him, it did make him powerful and deific in the process. It's not difficult to imagine why an idiot like Mookie would love projecting himself onto/into a Gary Stu like Deegan/Mookie Prime. But Snout is just pathetic. He isn't a mastermind puppetmaster like Dominic Deegan was. He doesn't have exceptional talents or gifts like Deegan did. Like there's literally nothing about him that isn't pathetic.

I'm sure it will, but it's still pretty interesting, for want of a better term. Dominic was a power fantasy from the word go, albeit one that started off relatively tame but got progressively more ridiculous. Snout is, like, a powerless fantasy.

Snout is a fantasy about being a Good Guy despite all the kicks life gives him. It's a transparent fantasy from someone who isn't really convinced he's a genius anymore, and has seen his career settle into a comfortable groove, and who isn't trying to impress people with how smart he is - but still wants adoration. And in this case, that adoration is being a supernaturally patient, decent, Good Boyfriend type that all his fans online will be so nice about and clearly like and want good things for. It's a softer, less obvious fantasy, but it's absolutely a one-note self-insert kind of thing. It's the fantasy of being soft and likable and unthreatening... and wanting to be sexually desirable as a result. So, Snout is a softboy.

It also lets Mookie indulge in his martyr complex with no risk. Good Guy Snout can heroically sacrifice himself as many times as he needs to (and expect to wake up to someone text dumping him on everything that happened while he was unconscious).

Yeah, I get it all. It's almost like he took all the criticisms of Deegan to heart, but completely missed the point/overcompensated. I know nothing about Star Power beyond that it had a female lead and was a sci-fi superhero and had like Mass Effect style aesthetics. Was the leading lady an OP unstoppable Fem-Mookie, or was she, however poorly written, grounded for a superhero? Like I'm curious when he switched from all-powerful god-king self-inserts to woobies.

At one point a by the books cop archetype breaks down and admits he was no better than the villains because he didn’t want to do things Starpower’s way. Her way is just punching all the bad guys while smugly letting them know that they’re no match for her. Super wholesome and pure is the new wave so it’s not too surprising a shift considering Dominic Deegan was always just recycling Mookie’s current interests.

So, Snout lost everything - his friends, his purpose, and all of his accumulated information from a year of searching and wandering, oh no! But it's okay, because he remembered the three paragraphs and three bullet points that sum up a full year Jesus, it's amazing how completely drama-adverse Mookie actually is. Can't let anything foreshadow or hang over the heroes - plot today resolves tomorrow!

I can't believe I've been posting in this thread for over a year and the sum total of gently caress-all has happened. The original Deegan would have done three or four hilariously awful arcs by now but instead we've had sweet gently caress-all happen and entirely because a COMIC ENTIRELY WITHOUT DIALOGUE is hamstrung by the fact the protagonist is offensively-portrayed-deaf and also a giant loving idiot. Just put loving dialogue in it instead of making him write out loud in his loving diary for gently caress's goddamn sake.

He’s got no idea what happened to Dominic Deegan so he can’t build up to the mystery in any meaningful way, but since that’s the plot of the comic he’s just repeating the same information over and over again or padding for time with stupid hijinks. There weren’t even Mookie-approved antagonists until some Twitter rando criticized Snout’s mom-wife. If Mookie had to fill a page with information instead of 6 panels with 0 progress this comic would be over by now.

Lol that this is the summary character beat, after establishing that both the Ink Witch and Arudak ar best fwiends with Snout. He doesn't give a poo poo that they have been kidnapped at all, with still no explanation as to what sort power or goal any of them have with the dream realm. Mookie is like a 3 year old in terms of object permanence.

He didn't even bother to clarify what actually happened to his friends. All he knows is they "disappeared". Did they vanish into thin air? Did they just run off? Did the bad guys even abduct them, or did they all just part ways and leave Snout's dumb rear end on the ground? For a character who's only defining trait is "curiosity", he sure does seem to not ask a lot of important questions.
