i would guess that wine enthusiasts and wine investors aren't necessarily the same people, i would guess that enthusiasts would want to actually drink those rare expensive bottles rather than keep them in a safe for their whole life

If I was a wine investor I'd love him.

Pretty much, the most expensive and collectible bottles tend to be from years where a normally expensive winery had a bad year. Bad weather or drought makes the wine worse, so fewer bottles get made and fewer people buy them to enjoy creating a scarcity of that years vintage.

I think it's safe to say using the amount of money he has in the way he has does, actually, make him a bad person. Not "hit your spouse" flavour bad, but bad nonetheless.

I can agree with that. I think the take on Depp that most "wine snobs" have is that one of the vintages he bought up was incredibly rare and meant to be savored and he bought every bottle on the market and chugged it like Bud Light.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure wine has an upper limit on how good it is when you drink that much and if not for the consumption of richass alcoholic celebrities, what the hell else is it for?

Reminded that it's a bit of a plot point in Brewster's Millions that buying expensive wine and drinking it is one way Brewster can legitimately spend his money while fulfilling the terms of the challenge.

Worth noting that before any of the abuse allegations dropped there were multiple stories about how Depp was spending more than he was taking in by a fair margin. Someone should tell him he's not starring in the Brewsters remake.

Although, I admit I lost the thread on the Depp case awhile ago, but wasn't it as simple as his side mostly being crickets and Heard just taking the narrative. I didn't follow it at the start and it's hard to tell now, but as soon as the tape came out most people pretty much flipped around on it and it's been fairly consistent from there. So yeah, a case of NDAs and lawyers settling it in Heard favor due to Depp's problems and her snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, I guess.

Actually, Depp had worse than crickets—J.K. Rowling was his most ardent and public defender. Not just in defending his casting in the Harry Potter movies, but actually contesting Heard's claims. And while Rowling hadn't come out as an out-and-out transphobe quite yet, she was very unpopular among extremely online people, and that was sort of the kiss of death for Depp on Twitter.

In fact, that's kind of my point--people accepted Heard's account because they were annoyed with Depp, not because they cared about the abuse a woman suffered. Honestly, Heard was not especially credible from the get-go; she was already known to have beaten her exes in public, and claimed she was the one being subject to abuse (homophobia, on the part of the cop who stopped her from actively whaling on her then-girlfriend, who as it happens was an out lesbian).

I think it's a little of Column A, a little of Column B. People were definitely tired of Depp, (and Rowling being his only supporter didn't help) but there's still a huge reluctance to admit that women can be abusers too. Case in point: is it just me or did the Asia Argento allegations just fizzle out?

At the time no one was accusing heard of beating Depp. Women being abusers had nothing to do with the fact that we all jumped on board the blame train. Any time on other forums and probably? This one people posted about Depp in a good light or said he shouldnt lose his role in Harry Potter people would trot out the believe women line.

And it doesn’t help that any time that I’ve tried googling the story to find out what the hell is even going on now, the side defending Depp gets drowned out online by MRA assholes using it as the perfect example of how every accusation against men needs to be called into question. Not that Depp deserves to suffer as a result, but it’s made it next to impossible for me to see any story accusing Heard without me mentally saying, “Well gently caress this,” and closing the tab.

I’m not kidding. Searching online for this story tends to get me a lot of forum posts saying things like, “loving bitch getting what she deserves,” and, “What a shocker, the woman made the whole thing up,” and I mentally tune out any more arguments. This one has been hard to follow, to the point where I’ve felt predisposed to not believe Depp, even if I know for a fact that that’s not fair.

If anyone can break it down a bit easier for me, I’d honestly appreciate it.

I might have some details and the timeline a little messed up but basically
1) Johnny Depp became a drunken, drug addled mess in public. One time even cutting himself on a broken bottle while wasted and almost dying of MRSA in the hospital when he got stitches.

2) Amber Heard and Depp start divorce proceedings, Heard alleged abuse, Depp denies it but doesn't accuse her of anything.

3) Depp's friend comedian Doug Stanhope publishes an essay saying he knows it's bullshit because Heard was the abusive one and threatened Depp saying if they ever got a divorce she would tell everyone he beat her. Everyone assumes Doug Stanhope is being a misogynistic rear end because, well, it's Doug Stanhope.

4) Divorce is finalized, Depp and Heard are both under NDAs, Heard donates her $7 million settlement to RAINN, there's some minor outcry about Depp being in the Harry Potter spinoff, but nothing comes of it because JK Rowling doesn't actually give a gently caress about women.

5) #metoo is getting bigger, Heard publishes an op-ed in the Washington Post about backlash she received for speaking out about her abuse, doesn't name Depp in the piece, but we aren't loving idiots.

6) Depp's lawyers sue her and a British tabloid for libel. Audio recordings of couples therapy sessions get leaked to the press (probably by Depp's lawyers or publicist) showing that at the very least Heard was the physically abusive one. That story in number 1 about him cutting his finger because he was blackout drunk, he probably wasn't sober but the finger got cut when Heard threw a glass bottle at him.

7) Most recent leak is video evidence that Heard physically attacked her sister on a night when Heard and her sister testified it was the first time she struck Depp and only because Depp had attacked the both of them.

Bingo bingo bingo

As has been pointed out in GenChat when this got posted, Amy has a movie coming out, and he might just be trying to ram personal issues into what’s supposed to be a bright moment for her, perhaps even potentially forcing her to have to recall the trauma since it only takes one rear end in a top hat on a Zoom call to go “so you have a restraining order against your former boyfriend, director Shane Carruth...”

It’s an abuser’s way to try to get a little bit more pain out of someone without, y’know, doing something that gets them arrested

I would say especially since that's apparently the initial Temporary Restraining Order (to protect victims, it can be issued without having to prove anything in it) I can imagine he's seeing it as a power move since it's not 'official' yet. He can show it off like he doesn't care, especially if he intends to contest it. Although maybe he's been through this before with others, and I'm not saying that's definitely what he's doing.

the running theory is still gossip but facts as far as I can tell are:

Ray's insta posts video of someone receiving oral from a woman. Speculation is it's his wife and this is revenge porn but nobody has confirmed.

Ray posted stuff on Daniel Logan's (child Boba Fett in the prequels) insta calling him a bad friend so people put two and two and assume he had something to do with this. Again speculation.

Someone posts as their kids claiming to be abused

Ray's wife does damage control and anyone who asks if it's real is told the posts from their "kids" is completely fake. She does not confirm anything else

Ray was posting weird stuff over some time and raging at people in the comments (think he had said vaguely hostile stuff to his wife before the meltdown even as far as months ago).

Everyone is in various states of lockdown now. Ray's insta has commenting turned off. Wife is in private mode. Daniel's is still open though he hasn't said anything and people are shitposting in his replies. It didn't help that his second to last post was a pic of the wife
talking about working out together

It's all weird and nothing is really concrete about what who is involved to what extent. I did meet Ray and Daniel once and they were buddy buddy at the time making this even weirder. Someone else told me Daniel was a scummy dude for what that's worth
