I’m rewatching the whole show and now halfway through season 8. It’s incredible that the quality didn’t diminish at all after losing Larry David as head writer. Other shows lose their head writers and the series just tanks but there’s a ton of gems in season 8.

It's weird because the quality didn't diminish, but there's a definite shift in tone. The final seasons aren't afraid to give into cartoon logic and heighten to the point of absurdity; I think I've said it before in this thread but it feels like in those seasons the writers dusted off some Simpsons spec scripts/pitches that they'd been sitting on for years, and, without Larry around to pooh-pooh them, they got the green light.

The first one that comes to mind is the Merv Griffin Show set episode. It's so incredibly cartoony, but somehow the episode is just funny enough that it works. I recently have a new appreciation for that episode since I realized that not only did they just accept Kramer's new lifestyle, but that Newman was showing up there just to be Kramer's sidekick.

The past few seasons of Curb have somewhat had that vibe too though. The show has felt a lot less grounded in reality and has lost a bit of its edge due to Larry/everyone acting more cartoonish.

I feel like Curb and Seinfeld are at their best when they're more grounded and have that edge to them.
