It’s a superficial take about colorism within the black community filtered through her own frustrations about not getting a date

I would hardly call it superficial; or at least as any more superficial than the idea of race itself. The idea that lighter-skinned blacks are more conventionally beautiful is a tale as old and hosed up as white supremacy itself.

To be more precise it’s a superficial take because it’s a scoldy gotcha that’s clearly coming from personal beef

I don’t mean to convey the concept is without value in discussion

It's also one thing to point it out as a trend (not as in a fashion trend, but as in a statistical trend) with regards to colorism and social judgments of beauty and quite another to name names, as if any individual person should be shamed for the color of the skin of the person who they love.

It’s just an in-progress version sent to Hype Williams (perhaps for inspiration while writing the Runaway short film?). Some parts are different such as the intro to Dark Fantasy, other parts are obv just temp tracks, early solo versions of That’s My Bitch and The Joy are on it, there’s three new tracks but none of them have any vocals, Lost in the World is 8 minutes long. It’s not essential listening or anything but it’s quite interesting

Ahhhh that hits spot on with what I was trying to reason out, thank you

Her tweet also wasn't even meant to start a discussion of it, like somebody above says I think it's just a gotcha cause she's like "but this is a discussion for another time" - so then you're just trying to point fingers at specific people regarding who they marry and that you think it's hosed up, and don't expect anyone to say what the gently caress?

Right, but this also points to a broader ontological problem produced with the “victory” of neo-liberalism: in this case, the hyper-focus on the individual as the mainstream form of discourse around social justice.

It’s only relatively recently that movements for democratic socialism & Black Lives Matter have been able to meaningfully shift the discourse. And of course their ideas are deemed too unrealistic, dangerous and un-American by the ruling class & significant segments of the population.

I understand this but it’s still super lovely to immediately accuse, personally, people of things and then hide from defense of that accusation with “there are complex discussions to be had about this!!!”

Agreed.

The obverse of this can be found in the the myth of the model minority, which is less immediately distasteful but, in my opinion, far more insidious. The narrative is leveraged to emphatically locate society’s problems in the individual, which further ensures the smooth functioning of the status quo.

Remember the declarations of Obama’s post-racial America? I think this aspect partly contributed to Kanye’s hard right-wing turn.

sorry if this is not the place, but like, what was the lady trying to say on twitter in the first place? that because the rappers/actors wives have lighter skin than them, that...?

this is probably me showing my whole rear end by not understanding this; i'm white as poo poo, but i just want to try to understand it. feel free to tell me to shut the gently caress up if i'm out of line.

Basically there's a whole thing where traditionally darker skinned black women are often seen as less attractive (or are portrayed that way) (as an aside, it's not just a thing for blacks, you can look in many places where darker skinned people are often seen as less attractive for various reasons I'll not get into here). This is combined with the fact that lighter skinned black people are often seen as less "black" than darker skinned. So it's basically a combination of those things-some probably justifiable things having to do with black men supporting standards of beauty that harm black women, and also some kinda bullshit stuff about black men not dating "real" black women (similar to the backlash many receive when they date non-black women in general).

Yeah Guy's classic and really helped shape the sound. Basically anything Teddy Riley was involved in. All the spinoffs from New Edition also really are heavy in that song if you're not familiar with any of them (Ralph Tresvant, Bell Biv Devoe, Johnny Gill, Bobby Brown) and all their spinoffs (ABC, Boys II Men, and a couple others I can't remember).

It's funny I actually was listening to something to long ago and thought it kinda had that new jack swing feel but can't recall it for the life of me. I'll post it if I do remember. Also I can give some other recs, but I'm not sure how much you know and a bunch of what I know is more stuff I remember from radio or w/e since I've not done a deep dive or anything.

He's getting clowned for this but Logic is loving brilliant for low key selling a bunch of albums, getting to spend time with his family instead of industry bullshit and inks a super lucrative deal with Twitch to do whatever he wants directly with his fans.

Logic has made good music. He's not a legend or ground breaking. I agree w/Joe that Logic seems to bite Kendrick. But its not a crime and there are way more people you can criticize than Logic. He minds his business and that's respectable.
