I think he made a beautiful post and did a great job and he is good.
So I still think Owls of Minerva is the weakest of the four secret societies, or perhaps the least flashy, but the list of benefits you get is pretty huge:

* Extra economic policy slot out of the gate and each trade route sent to a city-state grants 1 envoy. So if a city-state gives you a mission to send a trade route, you get TWO envoys.
* Extra wild card policy slot in Industrial Age.
* Replaces Bank with Gilded Vault. Getting culture equal to the adjacency bonus of a Commercial Hub is kind of meh because I usually only get +2 or +3 on those, but you could juice that with Japan or Mali.
* With Gilded Vault you also get a trade route for harbors, so you can get 2 trade routes per coastal city without building a lighthouse.
* +2 spy capacity and spies provide both loyalty and +1 amenity if deployed defensively.
* In atomic era, offensive spy operations provide gold, faith, culture and science and you get 3% interest back on the gold you're holding onto.

My Ethiopia game is going pretty well, but I think I need to go back and replace some mines with rock-hewn churches. Faith is really your main currency and I got conservative in some places and built 3 hammer mines instead of 6-faith churches.

Are there any mods that make climate change reduce food yields, or would this be a plausible mod to make? I hate how once you hit level 7 climate change, it essentially stops being a problem because the seas can't rise any more and the natural disasters are limited to one per turn.

I was thinking about that yesterday. The addition of global warming is great and I want to see more ecological consequences and crisis in Civ

What you suggested would be great and also some animal luxury resources, like whales and turtles, could on late game become threatened, triggering an option to call for a vote to ban it on the world congress, stuff like that

you realize that they had to cap it because of how quickly a single coal-based naval unit makes the climate change track explode yes?

Chad Sexington

I think he made a beautiful post and did a great job and he is good.
Maybe they just need to make the haboobs and blizzards that hurt yields more common? IDK

To me the problem with climate change is that by the time it becomes a problem I'm no longer in the micro-managing phase of the game anyway so I barely notice it. So all those hurricane-related repairs for instance are lost in a sea of Broadcast Centers and Stock Markets and all that which I sort of select without thinking.

Yeah, the problem is both that they made it happen way too quickly, and that level 7 climate change is almost completely inconsequential. Maximum climate change should be a dystopia with entire cities threatened by starvation, not two of my farms being replaced by a natural canal.

Why/how does one decide to go to war with city states? I kinda view them as neat little buffs I can pick up with their suzerain bonuses, is the trade-off of having One More City worth more than suzerain bonuses?

There's that, but also plenty of situational factors like "I want to settle on the other side of the city-state but I need the loyalty pressure boost," or "one of the AIs controls this city-state and I don't want them to have the bonus," or "they are sitting on uranium and I haven't been able to get suzeranity over them," or "their city center is blocking the only passage through these mountains," etc.

Most often for me it's because they occupy a strategic position that's more important than any suzerain bonus. A good example would be Jerusalem - the bonus is exclusively useful to civs that have founded a religion. If I'm gunning for a scientific victory, I probably don't care, and Jerusalem might have some territory that's useful to me otherwise - whether it's for strategic/luxury resources or simply because it's got a good defensive position for my empire against an aggressive civ.

Other CSs are almost always more useful for their suzerain bonus and I'll go out of my way to liberate them if another civ conquers them and the opportunity presents itself. Most of the science CSs are good examples of this, and to a lesser extent the trade CSs.

The economics of envoys usually means that you're just never going to have enough to spread them out over every CS, so you have to pick and choose whichever ones are actually useful to you. And if you're not investing envoys in a CS, it's really more of a question of why shouldn't you conquer them, since it's another city, with more resources, and it's only helping the other players to leave it be

Early game, the 1 envoy bonus is almost always useful no matter what, unless maybe it's a faith CS, and you've already got your pantheon and aren't otherwise bothering with faith. But the usefulness of those bonuses doesn't scale later into the game, so unless you have lots of districts of that type, their suzerain bonus has utility to you, or they've got resources you want, they're not really doing much for you

Organic Lube User
Apr 15, 2005

Be nice if we could just keep the bonus after conquering them. A billion grievance points to any rear end in a top hat that wipes Nazca lines and Olmec heads out of the world for good.

I did a Mansa Musa with Owls run just a minute ago. Took Religious Unity as well. Every trade quest was three envoys. Ended the game making GBS threads out more gold than usual with all the double trade route cities and suzerain of every city state on a huge map without having to fabricate any scandals once.

Still lost because I turned on apocalypse mode and you can't stop twelve nations from killing the planet

Has anyone actually tried to ride out the apocalypse to get the achievement for being the last one standing? My Chandragupta game would have been a good candidate in hindsight because I was dominating a pangaea map and I assume your odds are mostly based on surface area you occupy?

Still on my Ethiopia game and a culture or religious victory seems most likely.

I did do a really long game, but I should turned the turn limit off. 500 turns wasn't enough to destroy civilization even rushing science and pumping as much CO2 as I could. Of course, it was also a Large map. Maybe do a Small map and still turn off the turn limit.

And turn off a few of the victory types too maybe so you don't have to worry about fending off religious units clogging up the game.
