I do want to also mention this is the first time I've seen someone actually realise right away that the clock on the other end of White Hole Station implies you arrived slightly before you departed. Good eyes!

I had never explored inside the geyser. Clever. Also good work figuring out the warping and noting the times. Even with the warping, Brittle Hollow freaks me out. But that's partly because of how I did some things there. More when you've found better solutions than I ever did.

I'm excited to see how far the concept goes. idhrendur posted:I had never explored inside the geyser. Clever. Also good work figuring out the warping and noting the times. Fun episode! I'm glad you picked up the stuff the bug made you miss, it's good info to have. Tip regarding the scout's pictures: The Scout has a photo mode you can select by pressing left or right on the d-pad. In this mode it will work like a handheld camera, making it a lot easier to grab a picture of a thing you're currently looking at.

You're definitely better at landing than I am. I quickly adopted the philosophy that I only need to last 22 minutes and repairs are easy, so just do a controlled crash. Also, good work on the tower. It look me forever to realize I could explore inside that tornado by hopping outside the atmosphere.

On a related note, it seemed like you were having some trouble fixing the gravity crystals with the scout camera. As far as I could tell you were only rotating the camera up and down once the scout was in place - were you aware you can rotate it left and right (which translate to anticlockwise and clockwise from the scout's point of view) as well?

That's definitely my favourite part of this game, the fact that you see the same people showing up in logs regularly allows you to build a picture of what those people were like. As you read more of the scrolls and scrawls, you even see some characters develop and change. In that sense it reminds me greatly of Analogue: A Hate Story, except about a lost society that sounds nice instead of Analogue's depressing dystopian hellworld. I was very impressed with the jump! I thought the only way over from that platform was via the gravity crystals that were on the wall right next to you

Well, I'm sure you can crack this case! (I mean, I can be sure, because I know) One of my favourite things about this game is how viscerally apparent the spherical...ness... of the planets you walk on becomes when you're navigating. They really do let you orbit these things, and while your suit thrusters are pretty small, with the right jump and enough height you can do some really fun things with momentum... like slam into walls at maximum speed and die. Or do sick speedrun tricks on Brittle Hollow by slingshotting around the black hole.

Another tip: You can turn the ship around to look at things while it's on autopilot and it won't mess up, it'll just fire whatever directional thrusters it needs to at the moment. Also the initial way you got into the hanging city wasn't quite the intended way( and no, I'm not telling you what the intended way was), though there's no such thing as a 'wrong' way so long as it gets you to where you want to be.

I would love if you (the LPer) theorized some more about what you think is going on (either in this thread or in video)

No problem! I'll theorize here, since we're recording about three episodes at a time, and I'd probably be a bit behind if I waited to talk about it in an episode. Personally, my mindset is currently that we're descendants of (or somehow otherwise related to) the Nomai, although I can't say how important that is overall. I also think that the Nomai were aware of the sun getting to the point that it was going to take out the galaxy, and they were looking into incorporating the warp technology that they were developing into traveling back in time to prevent disaster; they more than likely got this idea from their observation of unintentionally going back in time a hundred thousandth of a second when they were first getting the warping up and running. I think that we're caught in a timeloop that was possibly created intentionally by the Nomai for the express purpose of giving someone the chance to save life as we know it. That being said, where are the Nomai now? What happened to them? Did they get taken out by the sun but for some reason weren't rewound? Did they leave the galaxy entirely to avoid their own extinction? I'm not sure what to make of the mysterious signal that brought the Nomai to the galaxy, either, I haven't come up with any theories there yet. That's the thing that's intriguing me the most (and I expect that's also going to be the crux of the story).

In retrospect I think I know how you're supposed to do it, but I found an interesting alternate. pedrovay2003 posted:No problem! I think our species interacts with time in a way a bit different from humans. Our day-trip into space involves enough time to not just see significant changes in a planet's geology, but to see significant progress in the stellar cycle.

I think I managed to cover most of the game this weekend. There are still a few areas that I haven't really gone to yet but I am saving those for later. I'm still not great at space navigation but there are a lot of times you can't use the autopilot.

FlamingLiberal posted:Musk would also probably build a flammable launch pad It's eco-friendly and biodegradable! The autopilot can also have trouble dealing with the Hourglass Twins and the Interloper, because of their orbits - the twins orbit a common barycenter between them, while the Interloper has an eccentric orbit. In both cases they are constantly accelerating or decelerating relative to your ship instead of staying at a constant speed, which the autopilot doesn't account for. That said, just paying attention to where you're going is usually enough to compensate for that.

In my experience Brittle Hollow starts the loop perfectly positioned such that if you have a read of the stuff you learned in your previous loop at your log, by the time you're done it will be just about to pass behind the sun, giving you exactly enough time to lock on to it before it disappears, in order for the autopilot to fly you straight into the sun. But don't worry, Slate says the next version of the ship will have a collision avoidance system.

Aw yiss slingshots. Finally delivering on the promise of Super Mario Galaxy. Don't get me wrong I loved that game but lord if I wasn't a little disappointed to find out that doing sick orbit jumps wasn't really on the priority list for them. Anyway, it's surprisingly how easily this comes once you discard your fear of death and just start jetting. I have this sense that y'all're getting tripped up by the distance readouts? The scale of this game is super weird; to hear the numbers tell it, these planets are all maybe 500 entire meters in diameter, and the entire solar system is 40km or so across. It's a solar system for ants.

This is basically Mac from It's Always Sunny doing a let's play, it's amazing. I would love to see y'all tackle Return of the Obra Dinn after this! So one interesting thing you haven't touched on is that the concept of universal expansion and therefore a point-source big bang origin being worked out from the observation that distant galaxies are redshifting (IE the light waves we see from them are longer, and therefore redder, than they 'should be' b/c the source is moving away from us) is real science: The picture in the Hearth observatory is a direct reference to the Hubble Deep Field—an image created by having the Hubble telescope focus on a patch of sky, of about 1 square inch apparent size from Earth, that is totally dark to terrestrial telescopes, and take in light for a month. In that single tiny dark patch of sky there are over 3,000 galaxies, among the most distant ever observed. Because they're so distant, and the light from them has such a long distance to travel to Earth, we're effectively seeing "back in time"—it's light that was emitted far, far closer to the birth of the universe than we are now. Also I notice that our Hearth friends are all named after minerals, and build things from wood, while the ancient aliens are all named after plants, and build things from stone.
