GutBomb posted:Just gotta whine about something. I live in Salt Lake City which is Colorado Avalanche AND Vegas Silver Knights broadcast territory. I’m a fan of the Avalanche and because of the goofy broadcast rules in the NHL that games on national television are also simulcast on the local Regional Sports Network (this being Altitude Sports. Altitude and Comcast have had an ongoing dispute for a while now and Altitude isn’t carried on Comcast anywhere in the Avalanche broadcast territory but the nationally televised games are still blacked out on Comcast in those territories. I can’t subscribe to an NHL package to get those games since those packages black out the home territory teams so I’ve got no way to watch those games unless I pay an early termination fee to Comcast and switch to DirecTV. Altitude isn’t on Dish either. You forgot the best part they let the dish direct TV and Comcast deals all expire at the same time so they had no leverage whatsoever.

It's obviously not a big thing here but ESPN and FS1 have been taking what they can get when there hasn't been much else to show, and it's not like there's a lot of programming up against it if you're running super early in the morning.

I watched it a few times when it was on at 2AM on the weekends and I was younger and drunker. I like it, its fast paced and physical and pretty easy to understand. Id watch it more if it was on at a reasonable time for me.

I would blow Dane Cook posted:Do Americans watch Australian Football? Do they know what is going on? Its bounced back and forth between niche Fox Sports channels and ESPN over the years. I think most of the diehards just have the Watch AFL pass. Normally its a curiosity in the American summer, but now has a bit higher profile considering American sports aint doing too hot.

I used to frequent a restaurant that often had Australian football on the TV if there was no American sports to be had. I had no idea what was going on, but it seemed easy enough to follow that I would sit there like "if they took American football away, I could figure this out." Plenty entertaining at a basic level.

the disposal rules are also important in Australian football--i like that every code of football seems to have diverged from the same rugby-like game to answer the question "how do we stop the game from becoming a slog when someone with the ball gets tackled and piled on" also the mark rule and the NFL fair catch share a common ancestor (the almost-never-seen rule allowing a free kick after a fair catch is basically a vestigial AFL mark, or obsolete rugby 'goal from mark"
