I think Souls games should feel easier as you play them. Sekiro was a game about constantly ramping up difficulty, and it shows. I personally prefer the power fantasy of going from a weak and confused hoonter to becoming an eldritch blood demon that is more of a boss fight in it’s own right than a PC.

Wolf is literally always on the back foot, always the underdog, and I don’t like that. Even when I have max stats and 30 hours of Sekiro under my belt I still feel like the game is trying to frustrate me more than its trying to beat me. Bloodborne is like a nice, hot bath (just don’t look in the tub or get any of the water in your mouth)

I'd say that Bloodborne suffers from the classic From issue of having an amazing first half and a 2nd half of a more mixed quality. Everything up to Rom is fantastic, and you still get some good fights in at the end, but i'm not a big fan of any of the areas post Rom outside of the Lecture hall. The mob and boss design feels weaker overall, and you end up fighting a lot of re-skins of earlier enemies.

Sekiro's difficulty curve felt weird to me, mainly because it felt bloody impossible up until the Genichiro fight, and then the combat clicked for me and I had an much easier time from there on out, aside from the occasional tough mob (goddamn straw hat monks).

This is true however the DLC is absoloutely loving incredible, and also the Woods are before Rom and I'd put them maybe at the bottom of my list. I kinda like the Lofts too.

As for Sekiro I bounced off the game for a year, then came back and decided "gently caress dodging im GOING IN" and it turned out that's what they wanted all along. I would say the Straw Hat Monks are insanely hard too though.

my first NG+ run I no-deathed every boss up until Asshin which was incredible. I did die to some groups when I got really cocky.

Double Ape is way weaker than the original Ape which makes that fight frustrating but not as difficult as you'd think

Oh yeah it’s actually more manageable than the the single, IMO, but just the actual presentation of “oh yeah that insane boss fight from 2 hours ago? Here you GO!” is insane.

I don’t have a character with access to Consumed Kings Garden yet. It’s underneath the first platform when you came out of the elevator. Down with the slugs and the shadow set.

I would put Nightmare Frontier at the bottom. Amygdala is a good boss fight and I like the visual design, but the actual level design is kind of boring, maze-like in a bad way, and most of the items are just chalice dungeons materials and I think a few runes.

The Straw Hat Monks are the blood lickers of Sekiro, an enemy your better off just ignoring for at least most of the game if not all of it.

Edit: Also glad I did Sekiro before BB. Dodging in Sekiro is radically different than in BB. It’s only used to dodge very specific kinds of attacks and has half (or less) the iframes the dodge in BB.

Lady Butterfly, Genichiro, and False Corrupted Monk (though you probably won’t go there before Genichiro your first time through) are all more difficult and ask more of you than most video games’ final bosses. Genichiro himself is set up like he could be the final boss but in Sekiro you defeat him about a third the way through the game.

Isshin is excellent as a final challenge, because you can't beat him unless you engage with everything the game is trying to teach you. But as a boss, he's too long to be truly great (plus you have to fight Genichiro every time.)

Owl 2, though, is one of the best bosses in video game history

Yeah I thought that wasn’t true, but the wiki says:
“Periodically through the fight the Moon Presence will summon pale white balls which burst and rain blood in a medium-sized AoE. If you get covered by the blood, you will not be able to heal for a short period of time. It acts in a similar fashion to Numbing Mist”
So partially correct, you can’t heal but you can rally, and get all your health back from the AoE attack that leaves you with 1 HP.

Defense stats on clothes matter very little. Elemental resistance to things like lightning or fire can be more helpful if you are going up against a boss that use those elements, but the vast majority of damage you will be taking will physical and even the strongest armor will do little to prevent that. The beat strategy is to not get hit.

Insight actively makes the game harder, especially at the end when each point of Insight you have lowers your Frenzy resistance.

On the other hand I usually like to try to keep around 15 to 20 insight or so whenever possible so if I want to summon I don't have to worry about not having any on hand, though going above that isn't recommended unless you're wanting to buy some stuff in the Insight store

There seems to be some rather arbitrary ideas of what's a quality weapon and what's not. IMO, the definition should be based on what happens when you get to 25, hitting a soft cap, in the weapon's strongest stat. If you get more damage by switching from skill to str or vice versa rather than continuing with leveling the same stat, then it's a quality weapon. Note that by this definition, all str weapons except for Kirkhammer, Whirligig Saw and Amygdalan Arm are quality weapons while among the skill weapons, only the Saw Spear and the Church Pick are quality. Of course, heavy stones will remove the quality part from all str weapons.

Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

I’ve been playing through the main Bloodborne story and posting in the PS4 thread, since the people in there recommended the game so much. I’ve made it very far now and I love it. I am building around mostly strength and skill and using the saw spear and ludwig’s sword. I just had the most clutch kill ever. I could not figure this boss out for the first half dozen or so tried. Then I tried a strategy where I spent the first phase waiting for it’s attacks that would get its hands or head on the ground and then run in and get a few hits in before running out again. But it’s second phase I couldn’t do that at all. I got stuck underneath it, and was having so much trouble gauging how close it’s arms were and could barely hit them. I chewed through all my flasks and thought I was dead when this happened. I saw it’s head dip down in front all of a sudden and just turned and reflex spammed r1 and holy gently caress I couldn’t believe it. I literally couldn’t breathe for a few seconds afterwards.

Just had to share. I don’t think I’ve ever ended a fight that close.

Unfortunately I thought this was the way I was supposed to be going for the main story, totally lost. I’m now back on track, I think, in the Unseen Village and spent a bit exploring that area. Extremely creepy and I don’t know what the gently caress is going on since everyone I kill keeps coming back to life!

Are there actually people that can beat that person in the great chapel where Eileen is laying there all bloody? I can usually do OK against fast moving hunters but wow. Just wow. I might have to just skip that one unless the rewards are really worth it for helping her or there’s some easy way to kill him.

There's no shame at all in cheesing him, he's nearly impossible, if only to finish out Eileen's questline and get her armor and weapons and a fast stamina Regen rune.

Spoilers for cheese: Lure him down the stairs and then run past him to the back left (your left) corner of the cathedral. Duck behind one of the pillars there, and he'll lose track of you and return to his starting position with his back to you. Walk up, backstab/visceral, and run back down the stairs to lure him back down there, and repeat until he's dead.

Sekiro is the easiest of the games because it all comes down to knowing your enemy, because knowing yourself is so drat simple it's laughable.

I've Platted BB, DS3 and Sekiro, and Sekiro was by far the easiest. It was a slog, but it was just endurance. Even up to NG+++, the fact that your attack just keeps going up always keeps you at level, and you never need to worry about equip load or build setup or armor resistance.

You can also load up on poison knives, and he won't dash as he's walking back to his patrol route. Just let the poison wear him down, attack every now and again.

I only know one guy who beat the Bloody Crow clean, and he used to do no-death runs with different builds. That monster is meant to be a practice in cheese strats.
