How does the adder compare to an Ice ferret?

They're sort of inverse. Adder is a light that wants to be a medium, IFR is a medium that wants to be a light. IFR is usually used for close up work when it's used at all these days. Lower mounts, bigger target, faster than an Adder, doesn't have good PPC quirks. More durable though.

Out of the Phase 3 Heros on sale, which would you all suggest to buy? Which would make the best brawler?

For brawling the Sleipnir. Another good mech on sale is the RFL-LK.
If you got money to spare the MDD-BA comes with a ballistic torso so you can run a UAC/20 on it, pretty fun but not especially good.

Yeah Sleipnir is the one to get, it's one of the best mechs in the game period

Ultraviolet is also a good mech with legions of UAC/2s

The weird visual poo poo like oddball textures in some places, generic bro MC, some of the voice acting... there's no fixing that. However there's a few mods that shore up some of the shortcomings pretty well. The AI mod is great and makes everyone better. There are mods that add weapons and mechs at appropriate times, some that do resizing, coloration, a better HUD, weapon tweaks, and others. The actual shooty bits are fairly decent, but it lacks a lot of the mech simulation that earlier titles had. Although I think there's a mod to move the game back in that direction too.

So yeah, if you can get it on sale, I'd say it's worth trying out. I still haven't bothered to beat it, but it's pretty fun with some friends too. (Just get the mod that lets your friends actually customize their mechs.)

Yeah I played it a bit with the Xbox Game Pass, the aiming felt super not great, and the enemy AI was pretty bad.

Is there a "good" Rifleman IIC?

Skippy McPants
Mar 19, 2009

The RFL-IIC-2 for Dakka and the RFL-IIC-A for Gauss Vomit.

Both mechs have a silly amount of gun for their tonnage, but you will always be a glass cannon in the RFL-IIC. No getting around that.

aniviron
Sep 11, 2014

If you're willing to be fragile and go slow, you can totally manage 6xUAC2 on the RFL IIC 2, and it's worth it imo. I think the RFL IIC flat out is even better, though- it doesn't look like much, it's very slow for its tonnage and the weapons don't look special but the quirk that lets you drop four LPLs at once is terrific, this mech is underrated. It's so easy to peek and focus damage in this thing.

Skippy McPants
Mar 19, 2009

Yeah, the quad LPL one is under-rated. You need top tier positional awareness since you're slower than dirt, but if you can find a good spot to sit at ~600m its sustained DPS is impressive.

Bascially, almost any mech that has Heat Scale quirks is going to be better than you expect.

a downside to the RFL-IIC is that its arm mounts sit farther below the cockpit than one would think, so you have to expose that big dome of a head way before you get to actually fire

It can do some goofy junk like dual-gauss on a 40-ton mech, but no, it's real bad. The ACW is an SRM splatform and little else.

Edit: I think the Pakhet is the only clan medium hero that I'd recommend without reservation.

Trip report: it's good

you're about 1/3 of an ATM Vapor Eagle and 2/3 of an SRM bomber Huntsman, but the secret is that if you keep between like 140-280m you can fire both and do a shitload of damage. you have a LOT of jump jets so you can get weird angles on people and you can take potshots with the ATMs before brawls start so you don't feel completely useless (AMS will bone you on the ATMs though)

you can also take out a DHS to add lower arm actuators and ammo/sensor poo poo

Might have to try that because playing ATMs without secondary weapons can be a bummer sometimes. The vast majority of the time you don't need them but the few times you do get somebody in your face and no help or way to escape feel really really bad. Also makes IS standard PPCs really iffy for me too even though a 4 PPC Marauder is otherwise really good.

Yeah, you won't put up huge numbers that often, but I have one-shotted so many lights and light mediums. Even heavies and assaults should fear you, it takes just two shots to open or destroy a component, and sometimes crippling is as good as killing.

Pinpoint builds can be deceptively effective, it's tough to get your raw damage up but if your aim is good you can make up for it by putting it exactly where it's needed. Personally I'm a big fan of IS heavy PPCs, popping light mechs in one hit is so fun and it absolutely rules on the rare occasions you can get headshots.

Any advice on a trial mech to use while I save up for my Hellbringer? Or at least size class? I'm managing to to deal nearly 300 damage and not be the very first on my team to blow up the last few games. :toot:

I'd say all of the medium trial mechs have decent loadouts and mobility. Though the IS ones (enforcer, phoenix hawk) are more fragile because of the XL engines. Timber Wolf probably works well, too.
Once you've got a feel for the tactics try out the slower or faster ones.

The timber wolf's agility has been crippled even more than most clan heavies. I would advise you stay away from the timbet wolf for now.

Consider the ebon jaguar or the warhawk trial mechs. They are available during this event and are pretty good loadoutwise.

Ebon jag will let you get a taste of clan lasers too. If you don't like clan lasers then you likely won't enjoy the hellbringer very much.

I love most of the builds in the OP, but I'm having the most fun playing lights. The Osiris and the Pirate's bane are amazing. Are there any other quick and pokey lights or medium mechs I should try out? I didn't like the Wolfhound or the Piranha at all.

Skippy McPants

The Commando and Flea are both in a similar class of what I guess you could call ultra-light mechs. They go super fast and fall over dead if anything actually hits them square on.

For the Commando you want the COM-2D with ECM and SRMs or the Hero with 4x MPLs.

The FLE-17 is a Locust with a turbo button. Its baseline speed is lower, but it zooms when you hit the MASC.

Leos Klein

I didn't think that turbo button would be THAT good. It's just what I wanted for quick escapes.

MASC is amazing on light mechs since its buffs are percentage-based and they've got some big numbers to work with. It also affects Accel/Deccel and turning speed in addition to raw throttle, so an already nimble mech will turn into a ballerina while it's switched on.
