"I can see that. Cool mutations."

It's also worth noting that the episodes which go deep into the African American experience were directed by Brooks.

In addition to Sisko being a good dad, he also had a good dad in Brock Peters. One of the things I really liked about DS9, even at the time, was how the central family was patrilineal without being patriarchal.

It's been too long since I properly watched DS9, but I remember thinking that Sisko was a great dad.

Ben was a great dad and was even going to quit Starfleet entirely to focus on his son before he ran into the prophets. I didn’t mean to say I thought the child abuse aspect of Jack Torrence is what reminded me of him; it’s more Jack Nicholson’s intense, almost slapstick, energy that Brooks echos in Sisko and the situation they’re put in (spooky higher powers deciding they’re gonna manage a crumbling structure in the middle of nowhere).

E: Ben not Jake.

rewatched siege of ar-558 and man i cannot state how much it does not feel like a star trek episode and its so good anyways. one of a few eps that buck the trend of 'more combat worse ep'

edit: also one of the few eps where i actually notice and appreciate the music for doing something positive in the show

If Jake hosed alt-universe Jennifer Sisko is that still, like, bad?

My gut feeling would be "yes" (they still share DNA and genes or whatever, right?) but he sure seems to wanna?

Worf seems like a lonely workmate your mom invites to holidays and has everyone call uncle. And he has maybe the coolest finished basement.

WORF: this is my bat’leth. It was passed down through my family for generations and is one of the few things my ex wife didn’t get in the settlement.
ME: wow.
WORF: this is a Targ skin. I acquired it after the divorce, so my ex wife can’t steal from me.
ME: neat
WORF: like she did 15 years of my life
ME: oh
WORF: and this is my train set. I named the mountain town Allman Brothers Town. I named it after the Allman Brothers Band. The Gagh they serve there is very flavorful.
ME: wow
WORF: would you like to play computer games now?
ME: do you have Duke Nukem 3D?
WORF: I have all the computer games.

I'm watching the episode where Sisko and O’Brien visit this primitivist planet where this white woman rules a cult-like environment and it's so good, just the kind of great one-off episode that early ds9 could pull off without too much trouble

I'm hardly the first to say it but the racial themes for the writing for Sisko has the potential to be really bad but they usually pull it off imo. The Gabriel bell episode is another episode where racial conflict is clearly central but it isn't explicitly commented on

Edit: as ghost leviathan mentioned earlier

Blending in like it ain't no thang
The Gabriel Bell episode, wherein the death of a black man as a result of an overzealous police state leads to massive societal unrest, and an overhaul of the early 21st century USA is one of the most prophetic episodes of Star Trek ever aired and it's almost unpleasant to rewatch it because of how close to home it lands.

Edit: For fucks sake, the episode even makes a point that the rioters are able to explain their story via a hijacked media so that the typical American is unable to ignore the injustice.

On a lighter note: Nog's send-off party with him auctioning off his childhood belongings is played like just another cynical Ferengi thing, but looking at things like Asian weddings and graduation parties, it strikes me like a lot of rituals being a socially acceptable way to give a young person money to launch their life without it appearing as charity. Not like most of his material goods are going to be worth much, especially with replicators being a thing.

Agreed, I always liked this scene and thought it really helped make the Ferengi feel more realistic. And the part with Worf and the tooth grinder is awesome.

If we see Bajor again in new trek media i hope it`s still a independent world and gripped with intense Sisko worship obsessed with guessing the day of his return. The traditonal faith focused on the prophets have been almost completely abanoned. No one cares about the Vedeks anymore, now it`s all about the emissary`s deacons who have built up a parallell organization.

Gonna start a radical sect founded on eating beets.

Also, the garak/ziyal relationship they tried to shoehorn in was really kinda weird and creepy. He's supposed to be some late 30s or older guy and is she even 18 in the show? Outside of that I like to think that garak helped rebuild cardassia and lived happily ever after and refuse to hear anything to the contrary.

Ghost Leviathan

Seems like it's only a recent thing that writers wouldn't make huge age gap relationships between older men and younger women almost a complete given. At least iirc Garak rebuffs her- I think the main thing is that they're the only two Cardassians on DS9 at that point, and so Garak's basically the only person Ziyal can talk to without reservations, and she's lived most of her life as a refugee or slave so her ideas of relationships are probably pretty messed up.

I checked Memory Alpha and she was about 19 when she came to ds9 so it's fine! Totally fine! I keep a piece of paper with the cardassian age of consent law in my pocket at all times. I thought it was OK as a one-sided thing. Younger people being enamored with older people isn't exactly a rarity in real life, and Garrak generally handled it better than most TV characters in the 90s would have, ie by NOT encouraging her or reciprocating her feelings. Even after she died his thought was to wonder WHY she loved him rather than to reciprocate. He did have that line about how being around her made his crappy life not feel so bad, but you don't HAVE to interpret that in romantic terms.

Particularly because I don't think it's entirely crazy to want to have some interaction with the only other member of your species (1/2) who isn't actively hostile to you. They make a point that Cardassians are vain and xenophobic so exile probably super-sucks on those grounds. She's got a crush on him and yeah, so what? He doesn't reciprocate. It's still handled badly on the show, and it could've been handled better, but I don't think it really changes anything.
