I use RTS and switched from 3-line to plasma trail awhile back and I've been loving the extra damage to oppressors and other big targets. It didn't take too long to get effective at aiming it.

The breach cutter doesn't do enough damage to merit using on an oppressor, the armour won't break. If I've got the hyper propellant launcher for anti dread duty, that's a different matter. Otherwise I'd rather save the ammo and magdump my primary and finish it off with a power attack.

Is the breach cutter affected by Opressor armor? I was under the impression that it wasn't. I fire that poo poo straight through bug faces and it still does plenty of damage to their weak spot on its way out the back. I take praetorians out that way, and bulk detonators as well (hitting two sets of pustules on either side of them from a safe distance). I'll have to pay closer attention next time I see an Opressor to be sure, but I think it works on them too?

Also I think Lozareth was referring specifically to the ongoing chip damage from their slow asses moving through the plasma field, not the beam damage itself. It does seem to stack up quite quickly

Just had my first game where Molly got stuck on the escape pod and proceeded to dance up and down the side for a good minute and a half. I was about to be pretty cross since it was the last mission to finish an assignment, but apparently the game anticipated the M.U.L.E. might not always make it due to pathing issues and opens the doors at 10 seconds to go anyways.

100% do Breach the Core ASAP. It's a series of missions that gets you nice things and then unlocks Core Assignment missions (which also give you nice things) every week.

Standard Deep Dives aren't hard, they're just long, and can easily be soloed. Elite Deep Dives are both lengthy and difficult and aren't recommended unless you have a lot of time, patience, and skill at your disposal.

That’s a lie, I’m bad at the game and I can still solo all 3 stages of the EDD about 50% of the time and the first two 100% of the time. Usually takes me about 75 mins for the full clear.

Oppressors and dreadnoughts have indestructible armour. You won't do any damage to it with any weapon. The cryo and flamer pierce so they'll always hit the abdomen but the breach cutter will only inflict damage during the time it passes through the abdomen.

It's personal preference if you want to use plasma trail, it's ok for killing swarmers and it does the heavy lifting for spinning death but the breach cutter either kills everything caught in it or it doesn't and I fire again. The DoT doesn't hit any breakpoints in damage as far as I know.

I prioritise coverage for the purposes of ammo efficiency, I want every bug on a wall and the floor in a narrow corridor to be hit than rely on a DoT field that doesn't slow like sticky flames.

Breech Cutter ignores armor, walls, and everything else except BET-C's force shield. Four shots kill an oppressor with RTS, 20% of the ammo, and it works from any side of the bug. Slower than a scout using half his cryo grenades and 2 shotgun blasts but still not bad at all.

Lots of frustrating dives today. Daytime players seem cripplingly unable to see or shoot anything not on the floor. If I don't shoot the acid spitters, they don't die. Ever. This has been a problem in every. single. game. If I don't shoot the cave leeches, they don't die, even when someone is repeatedly warned that there is a leech above the downed dwarf they're running towards. In one game if I didn't shoot the JELLYFISH, they didn't die. Watched a guy press E on a repair objective while he got swarmed to the point of death, just expecting someone to shoot the jellyfish for him. Maybe he thought he had thorns on? Idk.

Had a digger join my game and sit on a machine event for like 10 minutes, refusing to join the rest of us and do the objective unless we dropped what we were doing and traversed back down the extremely vertical map to help him, which would have meant then going all the way back up to finish the salvage. We ignored him, finished, then came and helped him afterward. He repaid us by starting the pod extraction sequence with only he and I near the drop pod (the other two were lost and asking us for help getting back up there) despite me asking him not to, running off and completely leaving the area as soon as it got hairy (leaving me as the only one in green circle), and then dying. I died trying to hold the point solo as Scout vs four people worth of bugs, and the map failed because you only have one shot to complete that step once the timer starts.

That was my third failed mission of the day, all due to wacky poo poo like this. Last night I had one too. Until this week I've mostly had good experiences, but now suddenly it's nothing but clowns? :argh:

Its why I host my own games, and don't play below haz4. I'm happy to carry someone who appears very new, but I do judiciously kick people if what they're doing is actively detrimental to the run, stuff beyond the level of "I don't know how to play." And for the most part as haz4 if you got one bad player the other two make up for it.

Though if you get more than one dud you gotta cull the herd and kick the bad player that other classes most rely on. Sorry, Never Platforming Engineer, me and Scout Repeatedly Dying From Fall Damage have places to go and rocks to see.

Thanks for the thought. I had previously filtered out Haz4 from my server list after a few sloppy losses due to disorganized randos, but if people there are generally more competent I'll give it another whirl.

Yeah I've generally had decent experiences with pubbing 4s, at worst they're mediocre and at least every other session I'll end up with a rockstar group that we knock out missions smoothly like it's haz2. Very seldom do I have what you describe where more than one member of the team is useless.

Additional advice, is if I'm feeling iffy about groups I go as engineer, you're very self reliant and have good damage, traversal, and ammo efficiency. With enough platforms there's nowhere you can't go, build a staircase if you gotta go up and use em as pillows if you're jumping down. In my opinion it's the easiest class to solo or just carry other people with. Shotgun is maybe the best standard gun in the game and both secondaries are fun, splashy, and can be built to be good vs waves or single targets to taste.

Breach cutter destroying terrain would be neat, but I think it would step on the toes of driller a bit too much if engineer had a gun that could instantly cut huge ramps out of terrain.

Make the terrain deformation very small and limited to the beams themselves, then - gouge out the terrain rather than be something that can be consistently used for tunneling.

Oh yeah, I never meant just wiping out terrain using its normal hitbox. I meant more giving it a second hitbox that covers only the line(s) that makes very small slices. It'd help the "feel" of the weapon and while arguably not super useful for terrain destruction besides pillars, it does have potential for comedy and cleverness.

I'm actually working on my engineer promotion so I'm playing anything else to keep getting levels. Normally I pub as engineer, and now that you mention it that's the only thing different here. Maybe I was carrying more than I realized?

I was absolutely the worst gunner until I realized that a gunner's shield is literally more important than the gunner's gun, and the gunner's gun is so important they named the class after him.

A good shield saves the run, its insane.

So I've managed to Promote the Engineer and the Driller and I've started on the Gunner. The gunner's minigun feels really mediocre. I know part of that is just lacking upgrades but I feel like I'm not putting out nearly as much hurt as my Driller or Engineer, and often find myself scrambling to throw up a shield cause I'm getting overwhelmed even when I've got friendlies nearby.

Also, dumb question, the reload button makes the gunner grab and spin the barrel. I assume that doesn't actually allow you to shorten the spool-up time? EG: You see some bugs starting to burrow through the wall during a wave or you're rounding a corner you know that has enemies around it, so you spin the barrel that way instead of pressing fire to maintain speed and not potentially waste ammo. I assume this doesn't work?

Every weapon has an animation for when you try to reload and can't. That's the minigun's

The bonus animations on your reload button are for fun, a flourish.

The minigun gets much better with upgrades, the piercethrough upgrade makes it feel a lot better, you're stunning and damaging far more enemies during a swarm.

You should spin it anyway while you wait for it to cooldown for the cool factor.

To keep the minigun spinning, you need to feather the trigger ever so slightly, you can reduce the spinup time to almost zero with an overclock plus the spinup upgrade.

Fat Boy is weird. The huge explosion is cool as hell, and erasing a bulk detonator with it was hilarious, but 3 rounds is so incredibly limiting that I feel like I'm never really seeing an opportunity that's worth using it on. It's always massive overkill and I think I'd rather just bring the breach cutter for sustain and flexibility. Maybe I'm underestimating the value of that max radius area denial? The rad field doesn't seem like it lasts super long, though. Maybe I'm using the wrong upgrades? We may never know.

Speaking of, does anyone have opinions on breach cutter line width vs quick opening beam? I can't remember which tier it is, but it's an interesting choice.

I'm using quick opening right now and I love being able to fire it anytime, even point-blank, rather than having to perfectly predict and position. But it seems like wide beam plus triple beam (which I'm testing out) would be a comically large damage zone

I unlocked a bunch of the special brews and managed to get my Dwarf to just below the passing out point (when they start rambling). I then went afk and made a quick dinner. In the 15? or so minutes while I was gone, my dwarf somehow managed to drunkly stumble from the Abyss Bar all the way back to his room unaided. Or maybe it was the room next to his. :iiam:

fyi you should be building it so you have 5-rounds. take the ammo upgrades so you've got 1+4 and when you resupply you should get 3

that said yes, breach cutter is objectively way way better but sometimes its fun to bring out the tactical mini-nuke every so often. always take the extended width. the opening duration is only 0.2seconds which isn't much. it's like a dwarf-width infront of you so the upgrade is unnecessary--you can do a strafe-jump backwards to get distance if you need it. 11222 or 11223 is pretty standard go-to BC build for all/most OCs

The Fat Boy is a jack of all trades weapon rather than specialist killer like the BC, you can use it to pop big clumps, lock down a corridor from an exploder or swarmling wave, chunk minerals up on a wall, or light up a kill zone. The BC is better if you have a crew you're coordinating with but the FB is pretty nice for pubbing where there's no guarantee that someone is bringing the right class/tools/competence for the job.

Thanks for this! I was running 1+3 because I didn't know that the resupply would round up on an odd number, that's fantastic.

The delayed open on a regular width line still feels weird to me, but I'll keep testing it. I am running stun stubby so it's not too hard for me to create space, I probably just need to adapt

I've been mainlining the fat boy ever since I got it because even if there's stuff technically better why would you not take nuclear weapons. It's almost as bad as not drinking beer before your mission.

And there's nothing better than just dropping 4 nukes on one big target and turning a huge swath of the map into a irradiated wasteland.

So I just bought the game, and I'm completely terrible at it and I have no idea what I should be doing. I'm wondering what class is most awful newbie friendly?
