I run bump kimura guillotine as a set. I get the bump least frequently of all.

Looking for hip bump sweep suggestions.

I'm already pretty good at it (blue belt level) but want to really focus on it. I caught a higher belt with it a few times, and I knew he was going to start defending. Next time he did defend, I went to kimura, he defended that and I used it to get the hip bump w/ kimura grip into mount. It was sweet.

I'm especially looking for things to chain this into and out of, or maybe little known tips or good videos. Currently my weakness is that I don't always put my blocking leg flat on the ground against uke's leg, as Ryan Hall suggests. I'm also not great at the kimura from guard, I mostly just use it to get the hip bump sweep, but being able to finish is something I'm working on.

This is the best video I've found so far, it goes over the hip bump <-> kimura combo.

Good vid. Made me think about how a tandem of closed guard kimura and triangle (arm on body vs on the mat) could be used as offensive weapons

First time rolling today since the world ended. Rusty as hell but I managed to tap one guy who usually kicks my rear end. He then proceeded to kick my rear end for the rest of the roll and the later roll but I got him once so today was a good day!

I’ve mostly abandoned hip bump -> kimura in favor of hip bump -> triangle. It feels like my body has a shorter distance to travel, and I feel like I can force them to carry more of my bodyweight while I do the transition.

The way Ryan Hall shows, it looks like this is less a transition from one to the next as it is a fake hip bump to triangle. Is it still possible to get the sweep while using this?

And to others, I'll check out the guillotine as a combo here although I can never come close to pulling off that sub. Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, because they don't plant their arm to stop the bump which leads to the triangle.

They don't have a choice - get swept by the world's shitiest hip bump, or post to stop it.

Hip bump to triangle is the only thing I can hit relatively frequently from full guard. Its a real joy to do it many times in a row and hit it even though the opponent knows its coming. They really don't have a choice other than to post with their arm.

Or they can post on your body to prevent you coming up, which lets you work towards armbars and stuff. It’s hazy because I’m still easing in after covid but I think my trigger to hip bump is ‘any time they posture up and don’t have their hands on me’.

This is my trigger. I'll aggressively pull down just to get them to posture up with extra force.

Good guys will always be keeping you down, against them you can grab an arm and push it aside our nice your torso side to side to avoid the frames.

This is why the hip-bump sweep variant mentioned on the last page, where you drag their arm across you, is so valuable. You're taking away the option of them posting and framing, especially if you can effectively shift which hand you are holding theirs with. If they do anything to regain control of that arm that isn't some version of "slowly drag elbow across your torso" you have an opportunity to use their momentum against them. And if they don't do anything, you take their back. Win-win-win-win.

Also this is the one I use the most that isn't just a speed hip-bump sweep where I have no control over anything but get the timing right and then they just get mad.

Does it? There's a number of scandals and I'm sure plenty more dirt beneath the surface. But for a sport that's basically constant groping I think BJJ does pretty well? I'm a guy though, so maybe it's way worse than I think it is.

Well there have been a handful of high profile people/gyms with this issue. DLR & Lloyd Irvin come to mind. Then there have been lesser known blackbelts who abused kids/women under their supervision.

I think it's not absurd to say there's a big problem if these sort of people exist but nobody is calling it out or being more proactive in stamping it out and making it easier to report these sort of people and holding them accountable.

I'm not saying all BJJ people are sexual deviants and sexpests or whatever term is best to apply here. I'm saying that there's this dumb mentality that "they're good at jiu jitsu therefore how can they be a bad person" or whatever that exists in forms outside of BJJ.

It's more of a martial arts problem and broadly a sports problem than specifically a jiu jitsu problem. Coaches get a lot of power and influence over people, and that's where abuse happens. E.g. Minor hockey in Canada has had some horror stories.

Right. I think that's a fair assessment rather than BJJ itself and probably should have expressed that a bit more clearly. I think really though gyms/chains need to do a better job at handling this stuff and preventing it as there's still abuse happening despite people knowing this stuff happens around the world.

This abuse was the type of thing where the guy used his position of power to date women younger than himself, then was a really abusive partner to them. It's not specific to BJJ, it's specific to any kind of hobby that has a culty atmosphere.

The gym is question is pretty big and has quite a few black belts but nobody ever competes because they're insular and maybe arrogant. Any big gym where nobody competes is going to turn out to be either a mcdojo or a cult, imo.

when i was in grade school in northern new jersey i joined the local affiliated wrestling team. i was 9 or 10 years old and mostly inspired by wwf and ufc video tapes (i owned a copy of ufc 5 and rented a few of the earlier ones at the time.). they did some very basic physical try outs. there was this 14 year old kid there who was part of this pilot program the schools and youth groups were doin in nj at the time to get kids through school quicker, think billy madison but 8 weeks instead of 2 and less peeing your pants to save your homie. so this 14 year old kid, his name was eduardo and i wasnt his partner but my friend steven solaris was. anyway they demonstrate how to do a basic double and make us take turns doing it to our partners. eduardo is kind of timid, doesnt really speak any english, i have pretty rudimentary but rusty spanish so im just helpin him out as an unofficial translator for what the coaches are saying, but when its time to practice im on the mat clear on the other side of the rec center. anyway so im keepin an eye on steven and eduardo, steven goes low for the double leg but it looks like eduardo wasnt ready for it, and before i could tell him what was going on, it was already too late. as soon as steven dives in BAM grabbed him gutwrench upwards then hurked him right down on his fuckin head. i tell you steven was my friend but i wont lie i was sitting there in awe watching his 75lb frame just get thrust right into the dark blue vinyl. most kids only heard rapid whistling and the anguished crying of a 10 year old who only wanted to be like owen hart but all i heard was the sound of victory. anyway, me and my partner couldn't grasp how to do a proper go around and we were both cut later that night.

I'm not sure about what kind of injuries you have and what your body can handle but I've been easing into Tsatsouline's Simple & Sinister kettlebell routine. It feels great for my hips and shoulders.

[Ideally daily, 2x week minimum]
Warm up:
- 5 goblet squats (keep a small weight on your chest and move/loosen your hips at the bottom)
- 5 bridges
- 5 haloes (grab your smallest weight and circle it behind your head, nice and compact. Awesome for shoulder mobility)

Work out:
- 5-10 sets x 10 reps of kettlebell swings
- 5 turkish getups each side at half full weight

The transition from calisthenics has been slow but I feel good. I spent 3 weeks doing it every 3 days and will probably spend another 3 going every other day. I use a 16kg/38lb kettlebell for swings and 12lb medicine ball for the warm ups and get ups @ 165lb. Once I reach daily workouts, I'll add in all the BJJ warm ups between sets.

Also, :D at the wrestling story post. It made my morning.

I've been doing S+S daily as well. I wouldn't do drills between sets, a big part of the program is making sure you're pretty fresh at each set. You should be able to talk in complete sentences before starting the next set, per the routine. The workout should take about a half hour. If you want to expand it by adding drills I'd think you could do that after finishing the get ups.

Nothing in the book says Turkish get ups are half your swing weight. The program is designed to get men up to 32kg with both exercises. For women, the suggested terminal weight is 24kg for swings, 16kg for get ups. Sorry, I don't mean to be Mr. Akshulllllly about this but I've just read the revised edition twice through as I was preparing to start the program a few weeks ago.

For me I am doing considerably less weight with the TGU than with the swing, because I find the movement pretty terrifying. All of the comments on the StrongFirst forum about how much it helped people's shoulders and overall movement quality. So, to shoulder problem guy, it's something to look into. It's been about three weeks of daily practice and yeah, I do feel like my posture is improving, and my left shoulder isn't clicking nearly as often as it was at the start.

Anyways I sauntered into the thread to mention my academy has been open pretty much this entire time. It closed during April, but opened up again and has been running more or less as normal. From what I understand of the local health regulations, that's kinda on the illegal side (the authorities shut down the dance academy my wife used to go to, and if anything that's a lower transmission risk than jiu jitsu). I'm still not going. I'm not returning until Covid is over or at least there are easily available treatments. Alternatively, if immunity could be proven via antibody tests and it turns out I already had it I'd go back. It sucks, I want to train, but I have to be responsible too.

Sigh. I guess it's just me and the kettlebells for a while!
