Check out Yob, Pallbearer and Sumac. Pretty much the best S/D/S has to offer the last several years and Aaron Turner's Sumac scratches my Isis itch.

What some current bands I should check out if I'm looking some super crushing poo poo with a really good groove? I've been out of the loop for years. I'd already be familiar with most recs up to like, 2008. Been on a kick listening to the stuff I was into in the late 90's early 2ks again lately. Some of my favs were early era Neurosis (enemy of the sun, through silver and blood etc...) and early Isis (Celestial, Red Sea,Mosquito Control, SGNL 05) Cavity, Eyehategod...Also not pure sludge but I love High on Fire.

Fwiw I think Celestial is probably my favorite stoner metal album ever, so anything that sounded remotely like that would be welcome. I don't care for any of their proggier stuff though. Like, anything post Panopticon was pretty meh to me.

Heavydeath were the first to come to mind. Death doom (surprise). I'd recommend Eternal Sleepwalker as the introductory album.

Jupiterian have a sound very similar to Heavydeath, but by way of Brazil instead of Sweden. Aphotic would be the starter pick here.

Ommadon are Scottish instrumental doom with sludge touches. Their most recent album, End Times, will let you figure out if you'll dig them or not. Most of their albums sound pretty similar to me. End Times was put out by Dry Cough Records, who are pretty reliable for good poo poo.

They also put out Leechfeast's Neon Crosses (great doom sludge) and Body Void's I Live Inside A Burning House (rawer, feistier sludge). Both of those are lower on the grooves than the preceding bands, but still worth checking out.

One-album band Reptensol are further out there (you could call it experimental stoner metal), but it kicks rear end. I'm still hoping they put something else out, five years on.

Dopelord are stoner metal in the Electric Wizard vein, but they do it well. Black Arts, Riff Worship & Weed Cult is the one to start with here.

Goya are similar, but bigger, heavier, and grumpier. Start with Obelisk, then move on to Harvester of Bongloads.

Major Kong are heavier still, and aside from some very well-chosen samples, are instrumental. I don't really dig the direction their last couple of releases have taken (shorter and lighter songs), but Doom for the Black Sun and Doom Machine are classics. Just check out the opening (and remainder) of "Acid Transmission".

Bomg - Polynseeds. Heavy psych stoner doom from a Ukrainian father/son duo.

Headless Kross - Volumes. Three-song sludge/doom album, excellent riffing.

I really need to dig back into their discography, but Head Pains by Rainbows Are Free is excellent stoner metal with some tasty psych twist. More groove than crush.

Likewise, Pale Grey Lore's Eschatology doesn't exactly crush (to me, they sound like a stoner rock version of Helmet), but the opening track has lodged its groove deeper into my mind than anything else I've heard in the past year. Rest of the album is a lot of fun, too, but the hooks in that first song are huge.

And Earthling's Dark Path moves too fast for me to call it 'crushing', but drat, they've got good grooves. High-energy (almost power metallish at moments) mix of black, death, and doom metal. Give the full album at least one listen, trust me.

If you want more, here's an overview of stuff from 2015 that I felt held up at the end of the year. And one for 2014.

God recs guys. I'm familiar with a handful of them, but I'm digging some of the new ones quite a bit.

Also unrelated, but just cause why not, I went back and revisited the one Neurosis album I never gave a fair shake and holy poo poo I want to slap myself for not listening to Souls at Zero more when I was younger. I don't even get why I bounced off of it back then, this is peak Neurosis.

They have an album due out this year so keep a look out for that.

Most of the bands in my aussie doom post have been working away on songs for albums due this year.

Hymns or self titled? Self titled production is a bit rough but the songs slap live. They have a huge sound that really pushes the riffs to new heights of heavy.

I posted a livestream of theirs a few pages back too. Features two other cool fuzz/psych bands.

Lol, did something similar a couple weeks ago. I was trying to remember a song but was blanking on the band name. I remembered the album had a buffalo on the cover, so I tried King Buffalo.

Wasn't disappointed either.

(Actual song was Artic Brother by Stonehenge. From Bunch of Bisons. Yeah, shut up.)
