Yeah like RoboChrist mentioned I don't think you'd be able to pull it off in a webcomic that isn't outright comedy without turning at least some fans off. This is the worse way to do it since it invalidated the entire point of the very first story arc and leaves you with the message "Star Power doesn't need to exist"

I mean, it says very poor things for her actual utility as a superhero, that all the other Star Lantern Corps got murdered by this one lady who is literally unable to be any kind of threat at all to non-superhero military stuff.

Yeah, also, the federation's solution when they see a warlike race is to... Let them kill each other? That's hosed up. At least Star Trek has the prime directive (which gets broken all the time in the name of peace), but in this case, they can't even use that excuse, since they DID reveal themselves!

Anyway…

Chapter 2.1

Oh, great. This guy.

Danica dreams about being drawn by someone who really wants to see the outline of her pubis.

Here’s the part where the stakes are dispensed with.

After all that they’re like “you’re no danger to anyone?” Motherfucker, how do you know that, she’s had superpowers for like a week. But no, no stakes allowed.

I know the joke here is that Bill is talking so much to intentionally annoy purple lady, but honestly, that’s kind of the average amount of text to panel in this comic.

Also, he’s evil because he likes porn. That evil pornliker.

ugh

Purple lady rescues Danica from a throng of fans and takes her to her quarters to hang out and recharge. Uh, why exactly did they need the recording of red guy? Wouldn’t it have been enough to say “hey, we need you, follow me”? Would no one have believed them without that?

Anyway Danica has a sad.

You’ve named something inanimate precisely ONCE in this comic.

Anyway now they are friends. Purple lady, empathy octopus, and muscle lizard.

We flash to these 3 remaining void angels. The two on the left have friendly eyes so they will be redeemed in the comic eventually. The bald one on the right has angry eyes and is too much of an evil jock for redemption.

Anyway angry bald jock convinces them to kill Star Power through some real dumb logic.

Black Hole Bill is being transported to prison, but his ship springs an ambush and hits the transport with a stun bomb.

Then why are you even pointing at her, and why are you telling her this, she knows this already, hell, why are you talking instead of trying to escape

Oh no! Not… That guy!

I’m gonna do a bit of a little exercise this chapter. As a measurement of how much of a threat the good guys are facing, I’m going to do a running tally of how many good guys or innocents are killed.

Here’s the first. (Purple lady doesn’t actually die here, so she doesn’t count.)

Kill counter: 1

Chapter over, time for more alien bios. I’m not posting all of them as most are pretty boring.

A people still obsessed with language in a universe with universal translators is an interesting idea, but, like, that’s their only trait? Mass Effect explored this in a much more interesting way with the Hanar and Elcor and how their unique form of language gets translated differently, and even then it wasn’t the ONLY thing that defines them.

UGH

“Hi, my race likes to organize things. This is our only trait. Please put me in a cubicle, I love it.”

This one makes no loving sense. Their world is dangerous but beautiful, so… They’re good artists? And doctors? Huh?

oh no this is gonna be A Thing isn’t it

I'm glad you're doing this Rotten Red Rod, but I hope you guys can see what I mean by Mookie writing. The history of humans is Mookie, those alien bios are Mookie. Even in the history of the world his need for only absolute good or evil persists, his inability to write conflict that isn't all a big misunderstanding or due to one side's evil, even good awful fantasy racism which is somehow worse than Dragonlance. Like the species are all know for one and only one thing. It's like a pokedex entry.

It's all so Mookie.

Chapter 2.2

Purple lady is in the hospital after BHB’s attack.

This is such a weird way to phrase this. Of COURSE anyone hearing that would assume you mean she has brain damage.

Wait, so… He’s one of the most feared bounty hunters in the galaxy… And no one has ever actually seen his ship? That’s a bit of a stretch.

So he immediately junks his entire ship. Dude, you’re an outlaw bounty hunter, you can’t handle being, you know, hunted? You couldn’t think of ANY other solution, like maybe disguising your ship like in The Expanse, or, you know, continuing to use the jammer you used to hide your ship’s identity this whole time?

By the way, this counts as a kill, because this AI is actually considered a person (you’ll see why later). I know, technically this is a bad guy being killed, but I’m going to classify it as an innocent because it’s a scene clearly set up to show how cold-hearted Bill is.

Kill count: 2

Purple lady is awake and Danica gets her the weirdest looking teddy bear I’ve ever seen. Is it an amputee?

Anyway she has a sad over, uh, that one guy. It’s all very emotional. We all loved him in the none scenes he was in before his death.

This is a loving weird panel out of context.

Anyway, what’s happening is that muscle lizard sees how sad purple lady is, and he has an idea about how to cheer her up.

Oh, wait, he actually had an idea about how to cheer DANICA up. Nevermind.

Sorry, I know it’s a minor thing, but I find it super weird that when purple lady is the one that’s emotionally scarred at the moment, his first move is to do something nice for DANICA. I mean, yeah, she lost her powers, but she seems mostly ok with it, and is actually enjoying working on finding the source of her power to get it back.

Speaking of that…

The hexagon grid looks like a very Mookie thing to think up (because he can draw it). Snout would definitely have a dream that looks like that.

If asari girl turns out to have a crush on Danica, and they actually get together later, I will legitimately give Mookie kudos. She reads to me as being into her.

Oh yeah, her species are good dancers, so that is her one of her traits. Because they all have only those traits.

They track BHB using his superpowered shotgun. Because clearly the first thing someone will do when they run away is go directly to the very well known supplier of their most powerful weaponry.

… That’s exactly what Bill does, of course. Meet The Supernova Dragon Lords:

Oh, yeah, these guys look like they absolutely have the manufacturing capacity to construct the most powerful small arms in the universe. Clearly.

Sorry, that’s a TENT. They’re in a loving TENT. Where do they make these weapons? Why are they more powerful than anything another advanced civilization has produced? Actually, ARE they actually as powerful as we keep getting told? (We'll find out!)

(Also how did he get there without a ship...? I assume he bought one off panel but that seems a teensy bit more important than small arms.)

Danica touches one of the other sentinel’s hand orb thingies, and wow, she’s in hex… Place!

It turns out it’s the network for the sentinels, and it’s gone dark. You’d think Mitch would have noticed this, like, a while ago? He seemed totally unaware she was the last when he first showed up.

So… Are they making those guns, like… On those tables there…?

Oops! Maybe it would have been a better idea to just use all the other guns you already had. Or buy some elsewhere. And not destroy your ship.

But he’s saved by…

Phhhhh hahahahahah “Roarboar”. I can’t tell if that’s earnestly badass or an intentionally stupid name like Taserface from Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Anyway Bill is saved. I’m not counting any of these kills as it’s bad guy on bad guy.

Jeepers!

Kill count: 2

Anyway, here’s more alien bios.

Single trait: hard work.

:what:

Oh gently caress off.

Nevermind that the lenses on her lensman suit form the shape of Orion (a constellation that only makes sense when viewed from Earth and of which Mitch is not one of the stars of, those stars all have names already), but goddamn it! I forgot about the stupid speed holes in Danica's costume.

Given his little justifications for a lot of them Mookie's point seems to be that a lot of slurs kind of have a point. they're more like mean nicknames, not slurs associated with any sort of overt bigotry or actual racism.

"It's just because Europeans thought they came from Egypt. See it's a mean word but you get why they say it"

I'm not saying Mookie needs to get explicitly policitcal in his works, but his actual lack of analysis as to why human conflict occurs, is surface level understanding of racism and politics, really fails a lot more in a sci-fi setting than is his nonsense medieval fantasy. But here you'd think he'd ask himself how a society could survive if it didn't have any "laborers" in it.

The problem is that every species in the Millenium Federation is apparently on equal footing with all the others, and they all apparently have slurs for each other. This is because Mookie is still projecting American society into space, but leaving out racial hierarchies and any sort of class or race conflict, that is he projecting an idealized liberal understanding of society into space. This is sort of representative of Mookie's lack of imagination generally, teh same way Mongrel town quickly degenerated into a pastiche of american towns even if it had a souk in it.

I think this is important to grasp because for Mookie, racism is correct. You aren't supposed to hate people for being different, but you are able to fundamentally class people into different categories that are essetiallized to a few core traits that the entire race shares. Granted these are sci-fi aliens, so I don't want to read too much into it, but this is the way Mookie has always written stories. It's different that in disco Elisium, but in that, power hierarchies are part of the politics of the island. It's part of a fictional setting that uses slurs in the way they are actually used, to define power relationships in societies. Here, his cheat sheet even confirms which objectively true trait the slurs are referencing, so these are just being mean (by saying things that are true but you aren't supposed to say them, or by pointing out a physical difference in a way a 10 year old bully would).
