You can see a lot of small explosions in this video. So they may have had fireworks stored there but not enough to flatten the port.

What we know so far

Two huge explosions have rocked Lebanon�s capital city, killing at least 50 people, injuring thousands more, and sending an enormous blast wave across the city that shattered windows, knocked down doors and shook buildings.

The scale of the damage caused by the blast is huge, with buildings miles from the port explosion in ruin.
While the cause is still unconfirmed, Lebanon�s interior minister said stores of ammonium nitrate likely caused the explosion.

Lebanon�s prime minister, Hassan Diab, has suggested a warehouse that authorities claim was the source of the blast had been the subject of warnings going back to 2014. He said he would �reveal facts� about the warehouse soon, but does not want to pre-empt an investigation.

Governments worldwide have offered support, including the UK, France, the US, Canada and Israel.
The blast comes at a terrible time for Lebanon, which is on the brink of financial collapse

Photos taken from inside the Grand Serail, the government palace and the headquarters of Lebanon�s prime minister, showed some damage inside the building.

The building is about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from the site of the explosion.

The blast also dealt considerable damage to the Baabda Palace, the official residence of the Lebanese president, according to Lebanese state media.

I heard allegedly it was a grain elevator / Silo explosion that caused the first explosion, then that had basically set fire to the port district which promptly caused the stored explosives to blow up.

I have heard some news agencies say that they analyzed the explosion footage and you could see flares of light going off in the black cloud. They claim that could be the fireworks. :shrug:

From my friend in Beirut:

I live 6.5 KM away from where the explosion happened at fireworks warehouse at the Beirut harbor. Apparently it was an accident. The explosion as you can see from the videos in the partage group was huge.. I was in my kitchen and felt the explosion then the shortwave.. the entire building shook and things started flying around in the kitchen... sharp objects too but they missed me... it was surreal and very reminiscent of the war when in the same place a giant gas container back in the late 80's also blew up... I went out to the balcony where my mom was and got her to go in and people where in panic mode on the streets... I am glad it was an accident and not a terrorist act or an act of war beacuse then the repercussions would have been far worse... any way... We are safe and sound and that is all that counts for now.... and I can't but make parallels with Lac Megantic

Next day edit: turns out he actually lives 7.5km away, lying bastard!!

Yeah that's good footage of the flashes, and the secondary explosion in general.

Any footage of the initial blast? Can't seem to find that but I'd imagine it would be difficult to catch.

So from the documentary I watched about the oklahoma bombing in order for amnonium nitrate to explode it needs to be mixed perfectly with a fuel as it is only an oxidizer. For them to confiscate 2700 tons of explosive mixture at once and it not make the news is weird.

The Beirut explosion is already on that page. I looked, and it seems like it was added 2 hours after the explosion, unless I'm getting time zones wrong (which I probably am). I was expecting it to be a matter of minutes with how obsessive Wikipedia people are.
