There is one rule for an absolutely banging theme song- do you ever want to just listen to it like music.

These may be cheating a little, since they adapted songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFFxiPegAE0

uses "If I Had A Heart", by Fever Ray. Whole song here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBAzlNJonO8

And of course, House:

uses "Teardrop", by Massive Attack

They had originally put it in three episodes, but the studio was like “gently caress, CHANGE IT, CHANGE IT!” before any of them aired. They didn’t have time to re-edit The Note back to the original theme music so that one aired with the vocals.

E:Oh, the studio only found out they did the vocals after The Note aired, I heard that it was immediately before. But they did re-edit the next two to have the original theme.

Agents of SHIELD - https://youtu.be/mmTlWtHYX-M
Newsradio - https://youtu.be/n96PR8oY1KY
True Detective Season 1: https://youtu.be/Xyu_MdKBXic

It probably could be said that all HBO shows have amazing themes/intros, off the top of my head I can also say that the ones for Deadwood, Six Feet Under, From the Earth to the Moon, Game of Thrones, and The Newsroom were fantastic.

The only TV intro that I remember not being able to stand at all is Enterprise, especially when I saw how it was supposed to be with Archer's theme.

Believe women.

The lyrics to the Cheers theme are.. interesting.

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot
Wouldn't you like to get away?

[Verse 2]
All those nights when you've got no lights
The check is in the mail
And your little angel hung the cat up by its tail
And your third fiance didn't show

[Chorus]
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see
Our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name

[Verse 3]
Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead
The morning's looking bright
And your shrink ran off to Europe and didn't even write
And your husband wants to be a girl
Be glad, there's one place in the world

[Chorus]
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You want to go where people know, people are all the same
You want to go where everybody knows your name

[Outro]
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you cam

MASH's theme song was written by a teenager for an intentionally subversive movie made about and during the Vietnam war so there is nothing surprising about the lyrics. I wasn't expecting a reference to transgenderism in a theme song to a light sitcom from the early 1980s. It seems to be a pretty heavy issue currently so it was odd to see it dropped so lightly that long ago.

Could be because Conservatives are playing it up as they no longer have gay marriage as an issue to rally their supporters around.

Here have the opening to Soap.

I was referring more to their decision to keep the music from the movie to the TV show (although obviously dropping the lyrics), although I certainly could have been clearer. Must have took either big balls or a tremendous oversight on the part of some TV exec in the 70s.

The backstory you alluded to on that song is hilarious, too.

quote:

Director Robert Altman had two stipulations about the song for Mandel: it had to be called "Suicide Is Painless" and it had to be the "stupidest song ever written". Altman attempted to write the lyrics himself, but upon finding it too difficult for his 45-year-old brain to write "stupid enough," he gave the task to his 14-year-old-son Michael, who wrote the lyrics in five minutes.

quote:

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the 1980s, Robert Altman said that while he only made $70,000 for having directed the movie, his son had earned more than $1 million for having co-written the song.

note- his kid wrote the lyrics, but not the music.

The series is set in the far future of the 27th century. The last living descendant of the original Highlander fights against the evil dictator Kortan.[3]

The story unfolds on post-apocalyptic Earth, after a meteorite collision nearly wipes out all human civilization after setting off nuclear weapons. Following this catastrophe, Connor MacLeod (the protagonist of the original film) and the other Immortals forswear the Game of fighting each other until only one Immortal remains to win the Prize. Instead, the Immortals swear to preserve human knowledge and help humanity. They cast away their swords and call themselves Jettators (from the French jette, "thrown away".)

But one Immortal, Kortan, refuses to swear the oath, he still seeks the Prize and now wishes to dominate the world. Connor challenges Kortan to a duel and is defeated and killed, as any Immortal who breaks the oath is destined to die. However, with Connor's death comes the prophecy of the rise of a new Immortal, unbound by the oath, who will defeat Kortan. Uncontested by the Jettators and nigh-unkillable by mortals, Kortan establishes an empire controlling most of the planet, which he rules from his fortress Mogonda.

Seven hundred years later, a Highland youth named Quentin is killed trying to defend his clan, the Dundee, from Kortan's slavers. He is the prophesied Immortal and returns to life. His dying mother reveals his true identity to be Quentin MacLeod from clan MacLeod, "The Last of the MacLeods". Quentin meets the Jetattor Don Vincente Marino Ramirez, who becomes his mentor. Ramirez teaches Quentin about Immortals and his mission to confront Kortan, and trains him in combat.

Accompanied by Ramirez, his adoptive sister Clyde, and their pet Gaul, Quentin seeks out the Jettators to gain their Quickening and their knowledge, not by beheading, but by a sharing as MacLeod and the Jettator grasp the same sword simultaneously (although the effects are sometimes just as destructive to the surrounding area). In the wake of a sharing the Jettator becomes mortal and often his or her sword shatters to signify this. With the wisdom of Ramírez and the Quickenings of the Jettators, Quentin may be able to destroy Kortan.
